View Full Version : This is upsetting and frustrating

I look tonight online at midnight central and there are , yes 18 people on about 4 different servers playing. only one of which will let me ping under 100, and then that person leaves so no one is in that server.

No one is playing this game online, and i think the online experience is great. Its one of the reasons I thought the life of this game could go on.

Developers-is there something wrong that I cant see all the servers? or are there really only that many people playing this game online???

I enjoyed the single player no problem. I am really not happy there was no dedicated server standalone software at start, and the lag is unbearable most of the time.

Is this game just a flop? did it not sell as many as I thought it did? Or is the best yet to come? I'll sell the game door to door, i think its the best FPS to hit shelves since hl2, and this game I think in terms of gameplay and innovative features blows the socks off anything on the market- please plug this game on tv guys get it going!!

I know. What's the point of learning the Preditor and make maps if noone is gonna play them. I have used so many server search programs and can't find more than a few people playing and like you they are on 100+ ping servers. The single play is great, but the online play must be a total flop.

Well, remember there arent many "Dedicated" servers on a decent pipe yet. Wait until the dedicated server files are ready and I'm sure it will get better.

i´m playing on german servers and there are a lot of take2 servers i always manage to find a server with 6 -7 of 8 players with a decent ping, but i too think that after the dedicated server files are out there will be a lot more activity in Multiprey

i remember back then when i searched servers for Strangelite´s Starship Troopers, that was frustrating

I don't see that the dedicated server will really improve things, given that most of the servers that are up are empty.
I think it's probably the server list issue where alot of people can see no servers at-all. Hopefully there will be a mini-patch for all the people who don't bother to check here.

lets hope so, its really bugging me. I honestly think this DM is great, and has a ton of potential

well, almost all of the servers I see have like a 300 ping and aren't dedicated servers.

Any ping > 300 sucks ass.
Home Dedicated servers also suck ass so I just wont join them. :D

When I get my server up on its 6Mb upstream connection then we'll be able to frag some asses! woot!

Well most people are playing war shooters and counter strike, it'll take some time before prey takes off in the MP but as long as this community stays strong it should. I'll be renting a server soon just havn't found many providers yet.

fill up the HH servers and Mine, Atlanta Frag, get on line, lets go!!!!!...I'm doing all I can do, I've played 3 hrs today and got a server going.. I've gone in game and waited for someone to join...I've changed my name so some guy will want to jump in with me. You're right Randum, it's a great game...maybe the pc version's not selling!!

Never played goldeneye but I may have to agree with you on this. I normally play FEAR which is also great in it's own way, even with a small community, I just hope this game does not go the same way. It shows alot of potential but for some strange reason does not catch on. Which I feel is sad.

I think that part of the problem is that the Linux dedicated server binaries weren't out until a couple of days ago. I believe I read that that they're also working on an issue where the Win32 dedicated server won't run without the disc. Once more people find out that the Linux binaries have been released, and once the Win32 issue is resolved, there will be more servers than there are now.

I still think if everyone who is asking where the servers are started playing then there wouldn't be an issue. Set a time and date people, get on. ;)

Part of the problem is different platforms, in the old days the pc ruled the fps world, now we have xboxlive & PS2 drawing the "online" players away, instead of somehow intergrating the online community, it has divided it.

Its nothing to do with it being on a couple of platforms ie pc and xbox live as even if you add up both platform players at the same time it only comes to around 140. The reason this game has failed in multiplay is as i have stated before, it doesn't offer enough to pull the ppl ie the clans and the community's to it, TDM and DM just isn't enough nowadays you have to offer a lot more modes or something that really stands out to pull ppl.The 2 modes it ships with may be ok for a 5 - 10 min blast or even 30 min blast but that's about it as it becomes boring really fast. Clans and community's want something you can play hours at a time and still want more. These are the 2 major groups that build on line community's and draw other players to games. So far there is nothing there to interest them. I run a clan that has been going 10 + years with over 20 members and we have played many a game for several years competitively before having to find another as player numbers drop to dead game levels, i even looked at prey as our maybe next game to play competitively but as i have said we wont be playing it as wont others because it is very very limited. Trust me if this had shiped with CFT, Domination, and instagib it would of taken off, without them you may as well forget it.

Even if a mod does come out to add those in effectivelly I doubt it would have the same kind of pull as if it came with it out of the box.

Unless I am misunderstanding, you seem to be saying that the solution to empty servers is to add a whole bunch of additional empty servers(?)

Another subtle issue that may be turning ppl away from joining a server and playing may be a mislabled ping to each server.

I am hosting a dedi server on my box which is sitting on more than enough bandwidth and has ample available resources, yet the ping to the server in-game for me is about 130% higher than a simple command-line ping. Is there something so taxing on the client to cause this substantial jump in ping? Regardless, this may also be adding to individuals viewing the list and seeing higher than reasonable ping times.

This happened with BF2 also. Only pings were showing in the 5000's lol

Hopefully they can fix that with a patch.

Hopefully so. I should add that after joining the server my ping is correct as listed in-game. I imagine this might have something to do with them possibly stacking the ICMP packets instead of sending them in iteration for each server -- ala, sending a ping simultaneously/concurrently instead of in succession. This could result in skewed response times. Alas, I am not privy to the code base of this game, so I am merely postulating.

now, i look, its once again around 12:00ish central time, a bunch of servers now show up...and only 7 people on one server playing, what is going on? and worst of all, my ping on those servers is like 200, none of the sub 100 have players on them...what is going on? Sometimes Ill sit in one hoping for people to show....

had some good games yesterday with EU clan and Holly and the like but never more than 2 or 3 playable servers ppld at a time
