Though this question has almost definitely been asked before, where did the name originate?
I noticed that actor James McCaffrey did the voice of Max Payne. What I also noticed is that James played the main character on the TV series "Viper," the main character whose name was Joseph Payne Astor.
Any correlation?

Originally the name was "Max Heat", but this sucked. So it was changed.

actually, that may have had a connection. I think GTA2 was made by rockstar games(http://www.rockstargames.com). The same people who did the playstation port for max payne.

There is no connection. They just ported it. The original title was Max Heat (kinda sounds like a porn doesnt it) so they changed it to Max Payne.

I only recently found out Payne is a real name.
There was some girl on TV, Sarah Payne I think, that was killed...hmm...
What a curse, to be called Payne and be killed...
