View Full Version : Which Apogee/3DRealms games did you buy over the years?

Here's my list:

Shadow Warrior (UK CD version)
Duke Nukem 3D (both original and atomic versions)
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold (CD-ROM version by WizardWorks)
Blake Stone: Planet Strike (CD-ROM version by WizardWorks)
Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons (bought from id)
Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy (bought from id)
Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter (bought from id)
Duke Nukem II (CD-ROM version by WizardWorks)
Raptor: Call of the Shadows (CD-ROM version by WizardWorks)
Rise of the Triad: Dark War (download through the web store)
Wacky Wheels (download through the web store)
Wolfenstein 3-D (bought this one three times, all different versions*)
Spear of Destiny (bought from id)

*More detailed list of the different Wolfenstein 3-D versions I purchased:
- The XPLOSIV CD-ROM release, which also has Spear of Destiny and it's mission packs on it.
- The download version from your webstore (1.4g).
- Floppy version, purchased from id back in 1996. (Possibly earlier, but I think 1996.)

That's 13 titles. Most of these were bought just after release, others later (Wacky Wheels and ROTT MUCH later). I was wondering, which Apogee/3DRealms games did YOU buy over the years?

Wolf3D (Dont remember-1.1, 3DR-1.4g)
Duke Nukem 3D 1.3D (BestBuy, IIRC)
DN3D Atomic Ed. (Same)
DNMP (Came with one of my GFX cards)
ROTT (No clue)
Blake Stone (^)
Planet Strike (^)
Shadow Warrior (Brobably BestBuy)

Im missing something, just not sure what and too lazy to look at all Apogee's games.

There wasn't a lot of money in my home during my childhood. We had a 486 DX 33 until 1998. Most of the full version games I had came with the SoundBlaster 16 and 2x CD-ROM drive "Edutainment Package" we bought for $500 in 1995 or 1996 (Syndicate, Wing Commander II, Populous II, Ultima VI). The only commercial game I can remember her buying me is When Two Worlds War, which was a great turn-based war strategy game that took forever to play on a 33 MHz computer. That, and some discount games that were released as "classics" (Detroit), and some educational games (The Secret Island of Doctor Qundary). In those days, I had to entertain myself by endlessly playing a demo version of Lemmings, and shareware versions of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Pharaoh's Tomb, Bio Menace, Wolfenstein 3D, Kroz, and my all-time favorite, Major Stryker. Plus Nibbles and Gorillas, the QBASIC games from MS-DOS 5.0. Beyond that, I wrote my own games in QBASIC and Turbo Pascal. I made a two-player version of SNAFU in Turbo Pascal that totally kicks ass. I would have allowed four players but I didn't think that more than three people could use the same keyboard at a time.

When we finally shelled out for a new computer in 1998 which, obviously, brought my days of using DOS as my primary operating system to an end, buying Windows 9x games, in all their DirectX-y glory, became a higher priority than buying old DOS games, and even then new games only showed up on special occasions like birthdays or Christmas. The internet allowed me to play all of the Apogee games that I had never been given on floppy disk and I discovered Hocus Pocus in the late 90s or early 00s and purchased the full version shortly afterwards. I also bought Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition, but I'm pretty sure I sold it at Cash Converters when I was trying to raise money for a trip to California. I would have finally bought the full version of Major Stryker, but it was discontinued by the time I thought of it. The freeware release was very exciting. I would still buy the full version of Monuments of Mars if it was for sale.

So, in short, I bought very few Apogee games. In fact, very few games. I think I've purchased one game in the last year (Bejewelled 2), and only one in the year or two before that (Halo PC). I play every game before I add it to my website, which keeps me very busy during the hours when I'm not going to work or trying to sleep, so I don't have enough time to get my money's worth out of a game I've paid for. That, and I still sometimes work on my chess, checkers, gomoku and pente programs that I wrote in Delphi.

That's pretty similar to my experiences. Before 1993, the only system in our home was an Amiga 500 machine. Awesome of course, but in the early nineties, games like Wolfenstein 3-D and Blake Stone were popular and it seemed to us that it was time to upgrade to PC. We got a 486/33 (I think, maybe it was a bit faster) and it pretty much remained the only PC in our house until 2000/2001 (not sure exactly), when we got ourselves one of those shiny new Pentium 4 machines. So I was basically 'stuck' with a 486 for years too. No regrets, though.

That 486 is still used to play old games on it.

Wow, Nukkus. That puts everyone else's lists to shame.

I realise there are no recent 3DRealms titles in my own list (Prey, Duke Manhattan Project etc.), that's not because I forgot about them, but because I didn't buy any of them. I did not like the demo's.

I hope Duke Forever will be better then Prey.

Nukkus, could you check which version of Bio Menace, Major Stryker and Xenophage you have? I only have the most recent full version of each due to the recent freeware releases, and I would like to add the other versions to my website now that they're free to distribute. (Same with you, Hudson, if you have full versions of any game that has become freeware).

I'm pretty sure that every version of the games that have been released as freeware are legal to distribute, but it's a good question.

Joe Siegler
08-24-2006, 01:27 PM
I don't think we've ever explictly stated what specific version number on a freeware release can be distributed.

But I can't see why it would really matter. Only about 5 people on the Internet would care about older versions besides current, and I think they're all on this forum anyway. :D

Interesting thread, actually there are a lot of good threads here.

Duke Nukem Time To Kill
Duke Nukem Land Of The Babes

I'm looking now for Terminal Velocity to complete the 3D Realms games on PC (note: 3D Realms, not talking about Apogee). Future suff I'll buy will be Rott, Death Rally, MP and DN for GBA. Then MP and MP2 for Xbox, I know i know, don't say anything, it's just that 3D Realms makes so foo***g good games.

Alright, lets see how many I can remember.

Wacky Wheels Upgrade Edition (the first full-version game I ever bought! I got it from the Authorized Canadian Distributor in Edmonton, Alberta...cost me a whopping $45 back then! A lot for me when I was little)
Commander Keen Vorticons
Commander Keen Galaxy
Wolfenstein 3D (in the id Anthology)
Hocus Pocus
Rise of the Triad: Dark War
Terminal Velocity
Raptor
Alien Carnage (though I still haven't really played that one yet...and I bought it a couple of years ago)
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Blake Stone: Planet Strike
Boppin'
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project

Also Duke 3D and Duke II on separate occasions from the PC Gamer CDs (which reminds me, has PC Gamer released any more full-versions of classic games in recent years?)

That's all I can think of. Kind of lacking, I know, but with many going free-ware, I have a good chunk of the Apogee games which I treasure with all my heart. Notably missing is Cosmo, which I've always liked, as well as Monster Bash...time to sign up for the dreaded Credit Card and buy them (http://3drealms.stores.yahoo.net/games.html) (and I may as well get Mystic Towers too, while I'm at it)!
