Into changing the name of Bully. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=67226)

There's also a nice preview (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=67228) there.

Canis Canem

What a uncatchy name.

Canis Canem Edit.. to be exact.. but well the Rockstar Label should be enough to still sell this right..?!?

dunno ..I think it,s not that bad..
the name made me think they could put some kind of elitist kind of thing in the game in which the player would be confronted ..maybe with the skull and bones society or something similar :p

if this game is gonna be anything like The Warriors (or GTA) it will rock. the videos look cool

It doesn't sound anything like The Warriors, read the preview. It still sounds excellent.

Weird. They should just call it Bullworth Academy. At least the school keeps its name. :)

What the hell is wrong with "Bully"? It won't get abbreviations. And you know what the game is about - bullies.

Now we'll get people asking "Hey I heard of this game called Canis Canem Edit I heard it's pretty cool I asked my friend but I want to ask you guys if CCE is any good and what is it about?" :p

John
09-01-2006, 11:24 AM
They obviously changed the name because of the political pressure from others. Glorifying the aspects of being a "bully" is alittle frowned upon with parents and political advisors.

Kristian Joensen
09-01-2006, 11:25 AM
Why couldn't they just call it "Dog eat dog" that is what the new name means anyway.

Odin

As far as it looks like, this looks like it'll just be named Canis Canum Edit for the Euro release, and it will still be named Bully in the US.

Pfft, is there anything that R* has NOT been bashed for yet? Geesh, I can see GTA 4 being challenged in the near future on top of this. I can only imagine what Nintendo would feel about half of R*'s games anymore, the big N wouldn't want any of their games on the Wii or DS, but they were dumb enough to let GTA get onto the GBA. Whew, I can see where this is going with Lieberman and Thompson again...

Duoae

They probably blame it on Rockstar as well... considering it's a "copycat" game anyway. Jack's probably sitting in his easychair saying, "This new rockstar game, Grand theft auto: Saint's Row, is a murder simulator!"

Never mind all that, the word "edit" in the title will make people think it's been edited for violence and language, so they won't bother buying it ;)

Sang
09-02-2006, 11:26 AM
Yeah and kids are gonna bully even if they haven't played this game. It's just natural. It's not acceptable per se, but blaming it on a game is just plain silly. I can understand, in a way, that they do this for people going on a GTA-inspired shooting spree because it's not something that happens everyday, but kids have bullied long before computers were even born.

So "this game makes kids become bullies!" is pretty stupid. They would become bullies anyway, sometimes even without realizing it ;)

Telee

Rockstar? What happened?! You used to kick ass.

If Rockstar really do lame out like this, I have little hope for GTA IV. Looks like Volition (Saint's Row) will have to carry the torch. GTA might be done.

Rockstar is in a point where they're basically the poster child of everything "wrong" with video games. They have quite a few senators that'd still love to make a public example of them by pulling their spine out from their backside.

So if this protects them from further scrutiny fine. I don't blame them. Because sometimes there's a line you can't cross, and Bully is one of those games that'd easily cross the line to where they can get their spine pulled out from underneath. Not a pretty sight.

It's a name, and it'll probably be better referred as Bully anyways. This'll inspire nerds to beat up people, and thus the universe shall balance. Stupid people, shunning the one thing that will fix public schools forever.

I've never heard of a game being unpopular for its title anyways. Aside from boxart being accused for poor sales of ICO in the states, I think it all rests on the previews, interviews and reviews.

Yeah, knowing R*, for other countries it would have to be heavily censored, on top of that. Whew, why's it always R* that's being targeted by the feds? There's other companies that're doing this same stuff (RWS for example). Seems like there's at least a half a dozen other companies they can target outside of them...

Rockstar is successful, and actually has some influence on the gaming public through the HUGE volume of their games that are sold.

RWS puts up Paypal links on their website begging for money, and has very little influence over anyone as almost nobody buys their games. No point in targeting a company that is one rent cheque away from bankruptcy...

This name change is retarded.

It's just as retarded as how 'Ninja Gaiden' and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' were called 'Shadow Warrior' and 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' respectively in the UK and Germany, because the word 'ninja' was offensive.

No.

R* North (DMA Designs) had nothing do do with this game, Bully was made by R* Vancouver (Barking Dog Studios)

After reading that link seregrail, I can't help but feel Bully is being completely misinterpreted. It's partially Rockstar's fault, as their pension for stirring up controversy does them no favors here. And I'm sure Rockstar was looking to get people's attention with Bully, but I think the game is being misjudged.

At the heart of Bully seems to be a fairly standard hub-based, quasi-platformer. And those shops seem to be taking pre-orders to GTA IV easily enough.

Funny.....homosexuality is considered "Adult Content" by some and yet even the most tame kiddy games have hetero kissing. You know what? I think I'm starting to really like Rockstar, they are managing to prove how hypocritical and backwards society really is.

Its also funny as hell to listen to everyone say Bully is "the devil" when its been proven outright that its one of the least violent games of the year. This is like Rockstar's revenge on the media/soccer mom.

I agree. The last two games I think Rockstar has released are Table Tennis and Bully. A bit of a departure (esp Table Tennis), but you'd think they'd get cut some slack. Anyway, I'd be interested to know if Jack Thompson will be worried that Bully is a "Homosexual Simulator" designed to train teenage boys to kiss each other.

Whatever shall we do?

There's nothing you can do. The non-gamers out there only want to hear that their claims are being verified. Tell them that videogames are indeed evil and they'll be happy. There is no room for rational thinking and logic when it comes to games.

I agree. The Sims did it first!

Gotta love this quote though:

"I can't have my kids playing this game. This is morally reprehensible. GTA (Grand Theft Auto) is a real man's game, Bully is a disgrace,"
So killing, maiming and stealing is okay, as long as there's no innocent love between boys? :D

I got the game a few days ago. It's actually quite good! Gameplay is much like every other game Rockstar have made using their (constantly updated) GTA engine, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's basically GTA kiddy style (as I'm sure you already know). I can't see why the game is so controversial though. The concepts may be bad, but in game, they're nothing worse than what's already been out for years.
