View Full Version : Jokes & Humor in DNF

i just read a thread about humor in games.
i don't remember much more humor than duke's phrases in DN3D.
So i want to know how you think about this, will DNF have some funny jokes or slapstick? I know that DNF can't have the mass and quality of humor like a Moneky Island that need the humor to be so good, but some funny situations, cool phrases, and hopefully some slapstick are in DNF! :D
I guess its hard to get all the humor connected to Dukes macho/hero theme, but i would really appreciate it to have a lot of humor! There are too many games out there that are serious, a good pinch of humor makes a game for me much more fun, and fun ist it what 3DR want DNF to be! :woot:
I never found Duke's lines to be very funny, but they did bring up the level of coolness. :)
The only way I can find one liners funny is if they mark a certain stupidity or self-criticism - Kinda like in the Serious Sam series. I remember one level that was full of insects and bees, and the boss battle there was a bug. Sam's reaction: "This game is full of bugs". That kind of stuff is funny ;) And I can't see Duke doing that.

Also think so, when I refer to some films like "From dusk till dawn" or "Pulp Fiction" then you have the style of coolness I hope DNF is like

I don't like Serious Sam so... when I hope DNF to be funny, is a type of self-irony like you saw some parts irony in Terminator3, for example with the sunglasses.... that is fine and give some kind of humor.
I don't like Serious Sam so...
In terms of gameplay it's a love/hate thing (either you like shooting a zillion monsters behind every corner or you don't) but the one-liners were pretty funny at times.

Jokes & Humor...
Well I hope its nothing over the top...keep it the same as duke3d...
duke3d is a great example of how a 1 game can have such a vast collection of different moods/settings..
so funny jokes through the entire game would suck!
So, keep the funny commments from duke, and the funny situations...for the right time.
Not during a scary setting with octabrains everywhere do i wanna hear duke fart...:mryuck:

I played DN3D today and when I heard "Let god sort them out" while blowing 2 enforcers with rocket launcher...

I wonder how exactly Oneliners will be implemented differently in DNF...
If it will be the same random ways as in Duke3D (of course fitting ones... He's not saying "hehe what a mess" if the enemy is just being shot... Since this belongs to blown-to-pieces enemies)
With implemented differently, i also mean if they will occur more often, or rarely...
Maybe ONLY in scripted sequences (god i hope not... random fun is too cool not to have)
And will there be some sort of parenteral lock ,for bad language..?
If so, will sentences be *bleeped* or cut intirely, so only non offensive comment remain..?
Maybe both options..?
Personally, i'd really like a bleeping option, and a regular swearing-on option...
Those *Bleep* sounds can be so really fun at times... it would add replayability for me... Would be funny to re play the whole (insert bleeping sound here :hhg:) ****ING story again this way... :)
I hope "activated" comments are still there...
With that, i mean such as when you use an item, Duke will comment it... not always using it, but at least commenting it... Like when you used a wall in Duke3D :D "Mhhp Mhhp..!" "Where is it..?" and as i said, other objects or stuff too...

Duke Nukem 3D was funnier back in 1996. It made jokes about other games coming out (e.g "I ain't afraid of no quake"), and was just amusing on it's own. It's hard to appreciate nowaday that the only storyline to the game was Duke kicking alien's asses because they blew up his ride. I also remember my older brother playing Modem-to-Modem with our neighbor, and if you hit the F key's, Duke would say something funny.
So the point is, Duke 3D is less funny today for the same reason 'All In The Family' Isn't as funny today.

It was also because they had taken the babes. :D

Wrong. It was because he had to save Earth. He was on a mission BEFORE they took his chicks or shot up his ride. He was gonna kick their asses well before then. (he received a distress call, remember? :) )

I hope there won't be a heap of self referential jokes regarding the game's lateness, like Duke walking into EDF headquarters and saying "sorry I'm late, got a little held up" and the general saying "where the hell have you been?" or stuff like that. I didn't like the self referential humour in T3, it's all so obvious and "post-modern."

I don't think there will be any quotes about DNF being late cause we all know and so do 3DR, that this game has taken a long time and it doesn't need to be brought up while playing the game

If the one liners are delivered well, they work. If not, they become grating to the ears and detract from the experience. Simple as that.

In Manhattan Project, when you would attempt to 'use' a keylock without having the key, Duke would sometimes say "Motherf*** keycards!". It was pretty funny because MP was a bit of a party-game, but I imagine DNF being a bit more serious and I don't think beeping sounds would work well in that.

But it's there as a choice in my description... So it's not something people would have to live with...
As a parenteral lock, it's something people might toggle, so they steiil get all comments, but without the offending sords... That's an alternative from overall cutting it...

I actually think that would not only be funny, but be appropriate if all the octabrains would turn to face Duke.

Hopefully a bit more humerous than DN3d and DN:MP, the latter was pretty packed with Duke's lines and were cool to listen to. :) I wouldn't expect Duke to make jokes out of the random like a comedian, but more to suit the enviroment and his actions, ala Duke3d, encountering enemies and objects, ala DN:MP.

That line of dialogue is fairly relevant now. :D

i just played DN:MP the first time, i love this game!
I thought until i played DN:MP that "when pigs will fly" is a phrase that GB has said with no deeper sense, but now i know better! :D

I think Duke should rip out some one-liners when appropriate to specific environments or events (commenting on what's presently happening). Obviously, he should still say the usual stuff in combat, but as the game goes on, he could come up with different things to say, that way it doesn't get old by the end of it all. I'm sure 3DR has a general idea of how they'll handle the Dukes talk. And it should be funny and cool at the same time. :)

My daughter loves the one liners while i find them to be ok. She is 14 and still plays duke3d. She use to run around the house with a water gun pretending to be Sarah Nukem. Any one else have this problem?

I didn't have a video camera when I was young, so I couldn't actually make duke nukem movies with the action figures, so we recorded them on my toy story 2 mic to cassette.
Now that is the TRUE Lame Duke.

My sister would come into the pc room while I was playing Duke3D and say "Ugh, you're still playing Quake"

Ouch, but i got a tasteless joke some of you might like.
Duke actually finds himself in a abandon church and goes into a confessional box and finds a carton of juice, and duke says "I guess micheal was here".
If you didnt get the joke just remember during the micheal jackson case, i belive the kid said that micheal gave him wine (i think) but he called it jesus juice.

Haha, that reminds me of this sweet video Drazula posted, of his 4-year-old(?) Gabby roaming through Painkiller with the ease of a casual killer.

It was incredibly cute. :D

One day, teenage daughters MAY be a serious problem...
Comparing thier acts with Xenomorph actions is a funnier way in describing it though... :hhg:
