While Doom 3 left me luaghing, Call of Cthulhu merely exited, Penumbra really scares the shit out of me.

The game is completly free, weights about 160 megs to download. It is planned to be commercialised.

There is a thread about this already. An old one, but you could use the search button.

BTW, the music sucks ass. Hope someone professional gets his hands on it.

A little bit, I played it all the way through twice... and then messed around a lot. Bu it's been months since I've done that.
I should re download it and mess around again.

Can't wait for the retail verison.

Penumbra was awesome in every aspect, it's rough as a tech demo however the full version should be a lot better. Awesome interactivity!

Yeah. the forums are nice too.
It has a good idea for what is horror. I spent flashlighting every room I went when there were like two monsters in the whole game.

I liked the demo or whatever it is, but that doesn't sound very good to me. Running around and hitting monsters over the head is NOT scarry. I hope fighting will be more of a desperate last straw.

Spoiler...

When the little flying monster shows up I knew how to kill him but I was still freaking out since I couldn't get him in the door way in time to pull the switch.

My game crashed later on when I got into the room where you had to use the mended key. I blocked the door off with crates when you hear that noise.
I went through the vent into the room with the computer and when I went to leave the room it crashed.

This is a horror game, not having a hand gun or a weapon and having to fear for your life as you try to find stuff around you to deal with your threat.

Also, after you mend the key and you're leaving I'm guessing a monster is there since the screen goes white and you hear it. Can you see it?

I loved the tech demo, and true to much combat could ruin the mode and feeling set by it. But if they make the melee very frantic and limited (as if melee weapons break, can only be used a little bit) it could greatly add to the mode.

Imagine pulling out a weapon to beat up a monster and having it break on the first swing. :D

You know, Silent Hill creeped me out and so did Resident Evil (REmake). But eventually I stopped beeing scared when I relized I have a gun, and a steel pipe.

Personally I say no melee weapons and just use the environment. Or have one or two weapons in the entire game that break so you don't want to use them because you know you might need it for something BIGGER later on.

I found the Project Zero series quite scary. Technically you have a weapon though it doesn't always defeat enemies... plus there are a few sections were you lose the camera.

Ala condemned?

Similar in a way. Only the guns ever broke for me when used as melee weapons.
A similar melee system would be fun, grab pipes and boards from objects to make weapons. Would also work with Penumbra's physics engine.
But have the weapons break after a few hits to add a sense of tension and worry.
So player's wouldn't be able to overuse the melee and feel to comforitable.

Ermm...how about making melee weapons not that powerful? As most monsters are STRONGER and BETTER in melee then you are?

How about making the atmosphere thick enough so the melee weapons and monsters, no matter how strong, won't affect the game's feeling?
