Right, so I have the right cables, and everything seems fine on my pcs end. It connects to the 360, and when I turn the 360 off it tells me a network cable is unplugged, so it knows it's there.
The problem I'm having is that when I go to test the connection on the 360, it fails whne it gets to the ip address. Do I have to add the ip address to some sort of list? It's been annoying me for ages now.

Are you doing a direct connection from the NIC on the 360 to a NIC on your PC? That would likely require a crossover cable (specially wired Ethernet cable that allows direct connections between devices not through a hub, switch or router). You can buy one quite cheaply at most electronics stores. Then you just need to set the IP addresses to be in the same range (e.g. 192.168.128.1 and 192.168.128.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for each would be pretty standard for a private network and work just fine).
May I ask why you're hooking these up this way? Planning on using Internet Connection Sharing to go online with the 360 or something like that? I would highly recommend you buy a cheap home router instead.

You can get a router for $50 at Best Buy. Works great.

No, I just want to stream music from my computer.
I'm using a crossover cable.

Have you installed the Windows Media Connect software on your PC?
