View Full Version : New games require GAMING pcs, not discount, pc-in-a-box

It's amazing how many consumers complain their new state-of-the-art video game has technical issues with their outdated, discounted, hand-me-down pc. I think the rule of thumb is, read the required specs on the box, then read the recommended. Now double or triple that if possible and you should be able to play all current games and any new ones that come out for atleast another year or so.
Don't hold a game company responsible for not going backwards in time to make a game playable on a Commodore 64 or Apple IIe or even a pc with parts that are 3 years old.
We want to move forward in the gaming industry.
Yes, it sucks not having the money to upgrade. Hopefully, if this is your problem, you will be able to play these exciting new games soon.
Other things to try:
Format pc
reinstall os
or atleast defrag and make sure hd isnt full
and virus scan
update os until all updates are downloaded and installed
install all latest updates on hardware (sound, video, etc)
install and update Norton Internet Security
disable os firewall
install latest patch for game
play game

Ok....and who didnt know this? And why the hell do you have sys. specs in your sig?
And why the hell do you have sys. specs in your sig?
People still think people care what you have in your machine.

He must be new, I mean he actually has "Norton Internet Security 2005" in his signature.. (not to mention he lists it as something people should do).

Probably the same people that are having trouble using a computer in general.

He spelled Razer wrong as well.

Actually I'm willing to bet I can Prey on a discounted Dell machine. ;)

I post my specs so I don't have to repeat it. This is the technical threads, isn't it? If you don't care, great. If you do care, great. It's really more for the devs in case new issues arise. Is that really so hard to figure out?
And there are alot of people who may only have a small handful of games to their name, not dozens. People who don't buy games more than maybe 1 or 2 times a year. Those same people are the ones this thread was made for.

I think this is common sense for us, but it should definitely be told to newbies who have a 4400+ and an integrated graphics card why they can't play Prey, or Quake 3 for that matter. ;)
By the way, to a lot of people, gaming pc=alienware. You really ought to just tell them to get a decent video card, since processor speed isn't hugely important as it used to be.

Yeah, cause WTF does this have to do with Prey only? It seems quite General.
dude this is clearly not the way to impress people at 3d realms forum, we are clearly the Otaku's of the gaming bussiness...
Not to mention pron also.

Folks who want to get into gaming should research their choices carefully before upgrading. A cheap, "Internet PC" computer from Circuit City with an integrated graphics card just isn't going to cut it.

I doubt Devs really care what your specs are. Posting this kind of stuff here is like telling The Pope he's Catholic.

I can run Prey/Doom 3 if I wanted to as well as a few other new games. My entire computer was custom built by me for less than $400. all parts are about 1~3 years old. I see nothing wrong with using a "out of date" computer to run games. I wouldn't use an onboard video card however, they just suck.

I agree, but ppl who don't want to upgrade find it convenient to blame the software rather than their Q3 equipment

It's true and seconds on the post about a video card. If you have a computer that is a year or even three years old, you can run just about anything out there as long have enough ram and a good video card. :)
Of course, having more dots always helps as well.

my experience is you need a good cpu to get all you can out of a goood card

While a slow CPU can bottleneck the rest of your PC, an average one will be more than enough is you've got enough ram and a fast GPU.

You are truly an internet sage. Why don't we add "plug the computer in" and "use a working keyboard" to this list?

As much as I want to agree with you I think you're wrong. Developers can't hust cater towards the high end elite crowds(unless they was to sell less than 10,000 copies), they must cater towards the middle and lower class as well. Of course there is a time when some of the hardware needs to be replaced. From my 11 years of gaming experience, I've learnt that I need a PC that can be upgraded twice in 4 years and in the 5th year I should get a new PC.
To me all this problems about hardware being not supported is because of that damn GeForce 4 MX and the introductions of shaders. I never bought that card but I can feel what they(those who bought it) went through. I'm glad that Nvidia got what they deserved with FX series.

My philosophy has always been to buy high end, and then keep it for as long as it will hold me (until games run like complete ass). I can still play games on practically the highest settings so I don't see an upgrade in sight. I don't believe in minor upgrades really, because it ends up costing you more than spending that little extra in the first place for high end hardware.

welcome to the forum Finisher enjoy your stay..
@others
Yeah he is new.. but well we shouldn't flame him because of this one thread..
But i don't agree with this step Finisher
install and update Norton Internet Security
It should rather say Install Firewall and Antivirus Software and update the software.. Since not all of us want to use Norton
Of course, having more dots always helps as well.
DOTS! MORE DOTS! Okay stop dots! :D
And that is that..
