View Full Version : DNF Promo Ideas

Probably been done already, but I just wanted to start a thread of ideas for DNF launch events / promo events / celebrations etc.

What will you be doing to celebrate the launch of the most long awaited game of all time?

What kinds of events do you think 3DR should be setting up for the launch?

Do you fancy bungie / MS style reality games, or something a bit more direct and obvious?

Since this has been posted before i got the funniest pick up line in the world, maybe duke has used this before. Here it goes:

LOL
 :mryuck:
What does that have to do with anything?
There should be a thread about advertisements somewhere, and I think somewhere there might be a release day thread (as in what should be done about it and what will happen, the what will happen thread is different though)
anyways, Joe said you wouldn't be able to not know DNF is finished when it is, so obviously they are going to blow up several buildings in a major city, like Dallas, that will make a sign from satelite images that says "Its done"

mr. pinky demon
09-12-2006, 07:35 PM
It doesnt have anything to do with it but this type of thread has been created before (like many others) so i just put it there for fun. Lighten up, its just a forums.

First day a video of George grabbing a shotgun...
Second day a video of George walking with it inside of 3DRealms HQ.
Third day george opening a door and walking outside.
Fourth day he walks a lil bit more and reloads the shotgun.
5th day George screams "IT'S DONE MOTHER ****ERS!" and shoots the shotty and then explosions everywhere along with "DNF... Always bet on duke"

Fake tv coverage of aliens invading the Earth and commentary from Duke that he'll soon kick their asses. Of course it'll be better if president make some speech in front of all citizens about the situation and that our only hope is Duke.

I like the fake TV coverage idea. Besides TV, they could put clips of fake TV coverage at the theaters, and make them available on the internet. Im sure they will go to number one on Google video.

They could have some Dukes (and maybe other DNF characters like some Duke babes) available at stores during the first week of the release. You caould get an autograph and/or get your picture taken with him (or them).

They could put some special versions of the game in the regular game boxes, that indicates you have won something.

Or perhaps when you complete the game you get a special code you can enter on their website, the first person to complete the game and enter their special code could win something very cool.

The best way to make the news is to do something controvesial.
Perhaps a pre-release party at strip clubs all around the US (all on the same day).
This would make the news big time.

That's called "Strip Day"(or smth like that) and it's held every month in 3dR. So, I suppose, there could be special Strip Day in whole country upon release of Duke.

Just kidding. I know that the story of Strip Day was untrue.

Best way would be a simple announcment that the game is nearing completion, along with a simple trailer and a few screens. Then maybe a couple of months later a better trailer and some more screens, then closely followed by the release.

Any huge overbearing release tactics would make them look arrogant imo.

I actually hope it won't be serious ignoring the (bad)general public opinion.. but I think they'll do the opposite.. probably that is why there is a complete blackout of information, to make the public forget..
IMO they should use the fact that people talk about them like a joke, to their advantage and joke with it .. if not they'll look like :tinyted:

ok, here's one waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out in left field .... :

Across all networks there is a break in the normal programming, and the announcer says : "Ladies and gentemen, The President of the United States"
George Bush steps up to the podium : "My fellow Amricans, it has comes to a time of great crisis. Aiens have invaded, and there is only one hope. (zoom in on presidents face) Mr. Duke Nukem, WE NEED YOU!"

(cut to duke relaxing with babes watching the TV) "DAMMIT!" (duke grabs shotgun)
Babe: "Awww come back Duke!!"
Duke: "Sorry Babe, I got some ass-kicking to do!"

(cut to awesome scenes from game)

Pres Bush "Allways bet on DUKE!"

Ty,ty... Think of all the possibilities:

1: Duke would be uppin' his health at a toilet- Kyle would be like "what the? Dude what's wrong with you? That's just sick"

2: Duke would obviously kill Kenny at some point

3: There could be a jealousy plot between Mr Slave and Ms. Garrison over Duke

4: Cartman would try unsuccesfully to take advantage of his power

5: He could nuke Southpark at the end of the show and the smoke would turn into letters and read: "It's Done Bitches"

hmm...I don't think south park is for commercialization of anything except maybe itself..actually it seems against commercialisation of everything..except maybe itself.. so seeing this would be very much impossible and out of place..

True, the smoke thing would be out of place and impossible, but so would Duke on Southpark... anyway... your saying you'd prefer pretty much anything ( a blurb, a commercial, a flier, a fast food restaurant cup, etc)?

well yes and no.. something that says at least subtly "ok..we know we are late..now it's done, now quit laughing and enjoy the game :p" ..but generic pub about the game would not be very good I think..and south park would still be better than generic pub..so i'm not against the idea..just I don't see it fit :p

I think they should start with some viral marketing. Release a few screenshots anonymously, without revealing what the game actually is. Maybe drop a few small clues in some of the pictures, like "EDF" written on one of the soldiers. People will puzzle over them and go "WAIT, are these DNF? Are these even official?? WTF'S GOING ON??" Then after about a week of confusion, they could do a big media blowout, confirming that yes those are DNF screenshots, while providing us with a whole bunch of new ones.

Guess I'm just a fan of the whole viral marketing tactics you see from time to time. There's something I find intriguing about taking that whole mysterious angle when revealing new things. But, I'm sure 3DR's got something great planned for when they finally do release media.

Okay, this is gonna be a CG trailer :D :

Imagine a typical club where the washroom is all nasty and dimly lit. The trailer will begin on focusing really up close on a pair of duke sunglasses that is placed beside the sink. The camera will be shakey and goes in and out of focus. It will then slowly zoom out and pan towards a stained mirror above. Water can be heard running, with a few occasional water droplets splashing against the mirror. Then, you hear a squeek of the knob, and the water stops running. A hand comes down onto the glasses and picks them up.

The camera will then cut quickly into dukes perspective- he sees himself in the mirror, and he says firmly: "Damn, I'm looking good."

And the camera goes black.

i wouldn't mind going onto some video game webpages and instead of seeing some stupid pop-up that covers up everything i'm trying to read it'd be so cool if you just hear Duke say one of his famour one-liners like 'it's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum and i'm all outta gum'

or maybe some new one... i know if i just heard dukes voice i'd rush straight to here to see the latest news :D

Simple and subtle would be my style. Could be a tv commercial or magazine ad. On one full page with the words 'WHEN IT'S DONE', then the page after that 'IT'S DONE'. Or to save money just use 'WHEN IT's DONE' and cross out 'WHEN'.

Nothing else. No radiation hazard symbol. No Duke Nukem. Not even the 3DR logo. Anyone that's paid any attention to pc gaming the past, oh, DECADE, will know exactly what it means.

Just send an e-mail saying "We did it" to three major gaming sites. Believers will gladly run to stores to buy it, and non-believers will immediately download the demo thinking it´s a new Daikatana (I sincerely hope they get positively surprised). :)

Very simple.

Give the alcamical symbol of radiation, below/next to it a plus sign and below/next to it the alchamical sign of gold. And post it on the 3DR mainsite.

It would be very vague, but it would pick up VERY fast. Exspecially if someone figures it out. Wait a month (becuse of the gaming magazines), and then let the media flood out.

Every gamer will know about it.

Maybe they could follow the "The hero that is forever" line from the trailer with something like this: the next screen would only show "...is here..." ending with a black screen where would be in a small font "Duke Nukem" and under it with some cool effect "FOREVER" would finally appear, followed by actual gameplay footage.
But as we've seen, they know how to make a decent trailer in 3DR, so I wouldn't worry about this much :)

This game needs no special promotion. Magazines, newspapers, and even the Pope will do the advertising for them. Expect car accidents when people hear it on the radio driving to work and have a heart attack.

Kev9709
11-11-2006, 11:28 AM
On a side note, I feel that it would be extremely tacky for 3DR to use DNF's ungodly long development to sell the game. I mean, why should they exploit the fact that they screwed up so many times?

Monkey Butler
11-11-2006, 12:16 PM
Because as has already been discussed about a million times, it's the defining feature of DNF's development, and because self-deprecation scores points. It wouldn't need to be in any necessarily negative context - not just "yeah, it's late" but also "but shit, if the wait hasn't been worth it!". 3DR are going to have to address the length of development at some point, and poking fun at themselves is probably the easiest way to get people on side.

And saying that the game needs no special promotion is kinda naive. Sure people know about it, and they'll probably care when it goes gold, but there needs to be more than that to convert all that into sales, and especially to convince the people that made up their minds about the game in 2001.

A possible E3 2007 trailer:

Trailer starts...take 2 logo is shown, 3dr logo is shown, nuke logo is shown...then we see Las Vegas..see how life's going in the city while a narrator talks: "Las Vegas..the future..the city of sin. Morale's going nowhere...strippers everywhere..people drinking and taking drugs 24/7 and talking crap all the time. The situation is outta control. It's bad BUT it's about TO GET WORSE!!!
Then we see alien spaceships descending to Earth..destroying buildings, pretty much invading the planet...chaos in the streets, people screaming!!
Narrator continues: "Once a proud nation the U.S. has become a big graveyard..our military forces completely wiped out...our president-the leader of the free world has been abducted! BUT the aliens made ONE BIG MISTAKE!!

Then Duke is shown..putting his sunglasses on and lighting a cigar...he says: "Nobody destroys our strip clubs...and LIVES!!

Then actual gameplay is shown...Duke shooting those alien bastards...hearing rock music in the background. The trailer continues showing Duke kick ass and just before the end Duke says: "I'm BACK!

Narrator says: "Duke Nukem Forever...10 years in the making..is finally done...and ready to rock your world!" Then you see a big DUKE NUKEM FOREVER..maybe in flames and Duke says: "I'm coming to kick YOUR ASS...SUMMER 2007!!

Trailer ends.

I hope they make some kind of Cinema style promo, with that Narranator who always does that stuff, ya know "one man, one descion, one desire!"

That would be great: Blakc screen, Narronator voice "A world in fear..." fade in, scene of fighting, people running and screaming, then some TV reporter says "They are attacking the city, this is a large scale invasion, the EDF was not able to stop them" Note: on the screen you see a "Live from Las Vegas" tag.

fade out narronator voice "There is only one man who can save the world....."
Duke voice: "Its time time to kick ass and chew bubble gum......but once again I´m all out of gum!"

DNF theme starts, fade in, lots of shooting and action, e in game scenes and sequences that show how amazing the engine is and what you can all do in the game.

You see Duke shooting some bad guys and making remarks about it.

Narronator "One man, one descion, one desire......the greates action hero of all time is back and he is forever!"

Atomic symbol, explosions and the title appears Duke "Come get some!" and then there stands it "Duke Nukem forever"

-Fades to Black-

Shows: "Its Done."

shows Bush playing DNF with world leaders on a 360 then giving a high 5 when they win
