Why did Max kill another Max

After the second bloodtrails, Max went to his bedroom and killed another Max Payne. I am confused. Can someone explain why? Thank you.

It's a metaphorical representation of Max blaming himself and considering himself responsible for the death of his family, because he let it happen.
