I was wondering if anyone here was familiar with Instlux. (http://instlux.sourceforge.net/) I have a Dell Latitude LS, it has no CDROM or floppy, and was trying to use this to install Ubuntu 6.06 (NET installer) from Windows 98 SE.

I download and install it, and it asks to reboot.. I do and once Win98se boots back up it asks if I want to uninstall.

If you're wondering why i'm using 98se, it's because this laptop is bitchy about any NT-based operating system for some reason.. my Win2K and XP attempts were stopped by an NTLDR error. After some messing around I gave up and decided to upgrade to Ubuntu for this machine.

I installed 98se, 2K and XP by formatting a bootable dos partition and copying the CD from my PC into /i386.. unfortunately I require to boot via CD to install and my backpack CD-ROM doesn't like DOS for some reason.

Any ideas?

[Edit]: Forgot Specs

Win98 SE
Pentium III @ 400mhz
256mb RAM
20gb HDD

Does your laptop support PXE?

Hudson is the computer you speak of coonected to a network? if so then boot then its possible to install the OS with a net install, or a compact install, do you have a USBstick? or why not try to use a set of distro cds with your backpack cdrom? it doesnt need dos because all the backpack cdrom has to do is boot the cd and then the linux kernel takes over from there.
