I've just got myself a Xbox 360 controller to use with Windows XP - The one with the driver disk, etc.
Now, I've installed the software drivers first as per the instructions then plugged in the controller. The "X" will not light up and the control pad will not calibrate. It shows "Xbox 360 for Windows (Controller)" in the game controllers menu from within control panel.
Calibration is a bitch. It has a mind of its own. When I play games it lags the shit of the computer - CPU Usage 100%
What gives?
Oh - I'm using Windows Xp pro with SP2.

I've installed the control pad on three different computers. ****ing nothing. Nothing. Doesn't work... and when it does the computer lags.
The green "X" is lit up until I get to the windows xp loading screen. This HAS TO BE a driver problem. ****ing annoying. Please help

Picked up another control pad... (costing me a bit ;) ) ... also doesn't work. This is a driver problem no doubt.
Where did you get the driver from? Microsoft.com?

You might need to use Xpadder (http://www.xpadder.com/) instead. Personally this does make me chuckle when this controller was hyped for a PC gamepad replacement. My logitech has yet to give me any grief....;)

Yup. Using it now and everything is working. Xpadder is bloody great. Thank you.
On a side note: The Xbox 360 controller is the most comfortable control pad I have ever owned. Bloody excellent.

Indeed, the X360 controller is a great addition to any gaming PC.
As for the driver problem, you may want to check out Microsoft.com for updated drivers, the disc they give you is shit. I got the latest drivers from them and have not experienced any problems.
Enjoy! :D

Never had any trouble with the original drivers... I went and upgrade the drivers to the XBCD drivers and they work great as well.

Not sure what went wrong on my end. Once I installed Xpadder the controller worked fine.

Did you guys try the XBCD Drivers for the 360 controller? They are fan made and work great. The triggers become regular buttons with it and it works better than the MS Drivers for now. When games support the 360 controller out of the box it'll be great.

Hmm. I'm only running the Directx which is included with SP2. I'll check that out. Thanks :)

I think so. The controller installs some sort of other sound device "USB audio device" - so I'm guessing you can hook the mic into the controller or something like that. I had to disable it as it was taking over my primary driver witch was ****ing annoying.

Never expect a MS product to work with another MS product. ;)

$eems like M$ wants to profit you into a product that won't live up to expectations. Typical Micro$oft product, typical drivers that are too inferior to make a quick work of something that could easily double up on a PC as well as an X360...

Does microsoft even make joysticks and gamepads anymore for pc?
Im sure they they discontinued the sidewinder products.(cant find anything on their site)
It would be wise for them to make drivers for 360 accessories to give logitech some competition.

Sure, maybe Sony may do a wired version of their PS3 controller for a PC, with an Eye Toy-style sensor camera for motion, I can see Sony doing that for their gaming VAIO systems.
