View Full Version : RAM and crap
Ok guys, I'm getting a new stick of RAM (512 is not cutting it anymore for me), and I need to know what specs are important for compatibility. In other words, how do I figure out what kind of RAM my mobo supports?
So far I found that it supports DDR200 up to DDR400 SDRAM. Does PC#### matter, and if so how can I find that out, since it's not listed in my manual.

If you know the exact model number of your motherboard, we can tell you for sure.

I believe DDR400 SDRAM is the same as PC3200 DDR RAM.
PC3200 would be the fastest supported but your motherboard then.
What speed is the existing stick of RAM? If it's lower than what you buy, both will run at that lower speed when you have them in tandem.

I'm not sure, I was trying to figure that out. Is there any software or anything that can tell me?

Well, some motherboard's startup screens tell you at what speed the memory is running.
CPU-Z should show it:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
(Look at the SPD tab in the proggy.)

Interesting prog Foxy, just one problem I have with it. I have PC3200 DDR2 which is 400MHz (boot up screen of bios even says it's set at 400MHz) but this cpuz says it's 200MHz.

You can go to a preferred memory vendor's website and look up your model there.
However, I did the work for you: \o

And what about the crap? I saw to questions about that.
Anyway, you could also open your PC case and take the mem-module out to have a look at it directly.

Interesting prog Foxy, just one problem I have with it. I have PC3200 DDR2 which is 400MHz (boot up screen of bios even says it's set at 400MHz) but this cpuz says it's 200MHz.
It shows 200MHz because your memory is DDR (double data rate.) You must multiply the 200MHz by 2. Which = 400MHz. :D
CPU-Z should show it:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
(Look at the SPD tab in the proggy.)
Awesome dude. +25 awesome points.

Forgot about that program. It changed quite a bit since I last used it :/
PC Wizard (same site) is usefull for identifying other hardware, for those interested.
