Well, as Tom Hall's Anachonox is about to hit the shelves, speculation has run rampant that Dopefish would make an appearance in the game. I can now announce that not only is there a Dopefish - there are three baby Dopefish in the game as cameo characters. Yours truly has done the voice for the Dopefish again - more details will be posted when Anachronox has actually shipped. In the meantime, check out this teaser picture of Anachronofish! smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Found this on a Commander Keen GBC review over at GameSpot. No information is given on where in the game it is, but I've e-mailed the reviewer. But, hey. At least you know what to look for.

Wow! With a Dopefish it *almost* looks like a real Keen game!

Crosma. Ignoring the music and lack of a story line the game is very much keen. However the dopefish jump out the water and are a little small, plus they are on fribbulus Xax no less.
Still going on that I consider Commander Keen the most significant part of my maturity and love Keen4 like a brother, I was very, very impressed with commie keen, Amazon sent it the other day and I bloody love it. The screenshots don't give it justice. You will love this game. (Except for droidius prime, which I consider to be the bastard child of keen smilies/images/icons/wink.gif.

I have played it, I really wanted to like it, even though I've said before that I don't think it looks like a Keen game. I wanted it to play like a Keen game, but it doesn't.
Sure, it's not a bad game, compared to most Gameboy games it's a work of art, but it's not Keen. You can't see enough at once, and I'm sure it's a faster game. There's no cool monsters either (or at least, I missed them).
Biggest pain of all: there are numerous "fall off the bottom of the screen" bits, akin to Sonic, but not usually to Keen. That really annoyed me. I guess it doesn't make much difference gameplay wise, since usually there'd just be spikes there, still annoyed the crap out of me though, the first time I "fell off the bottom of the screen", I thought it was going to be a passage or something.

I asked Tom about the GBC Dopefish - and he said it's just plastered there where you see it above. Not hidden or anything.

I've seen the fish in the GBC Keen, and the small ones jumping up from the water - pretty funny actually smilies/images/icons/smile.gif but not too Dopefishy..
Can anyone gimme some passwords for Keen GBC..?!

I just knew Hall wouldn't be able to not put a fish in his game...
I wonder if this was his own idea, or did Joe put some pressure on him, as the Fish stories in ROTT are pretty well documented... smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

Tom was right - about the one I was talking about. This second picture was not what I sent him.

I did ask Tom a few times during Anachronox development about the Fish. He kept saying maybe. I suspect my nagging reminded him, but he probably would have done it himself - Romero did it himself in Daikatana.

Then again, Romero placed a fish in Quake on his own smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
The RSFTUOTDI3DRG was a petition to have Dopefish in 3dR games, after GB announced that there would be no more fish in future 3dR products.
I hardly think IONstorm games are 3dR...

Right you are. But the RSFTUOTDI3DRG, despite their name, expanded to include all companies whose employees had anything to do with the Dopefish (including id and Ritual Entertainment), which most definitely includes ION Storm. Daikatana and Anachronox were the main targets of the petition, as no 3D Realms game releases were in sight in 1997, and ION Storm seemed more sympathetic to Dopefish fans. SiN was also a target, but that failed while the petition was still active.

If you truly think that this was a real reason that it was in there - think again. Dopefish was something that Tom created - if he didn't use it himself, no one else would, and Romero was also involved. If there was ANYONE who wouldn't need prodding it's them.
If you want to claim credit, get it in a game that was produced by someone else who WAS NOT involved with Keen's creation originally.

Fnord! It's the Return of the Dopefish!! smilies/dopefish.gif smilies/dopefish.gif smilies/dopefish.gif Now I've GOT to get this game, since it has Dopefish and has some form of Keen I now consider it to be a Keen game. I was actually going to get it anyways just to see if it was anywhere near the classic Keen games, and even if it's not it looks more like a Keen game than Keen Dreams was.
Hey Joe, you think you could post some sound samples for the Dopefish from Anachonox on Dopefish.com? And were they any thing like your part as the Dopefish in Wacky Wheels? And some more pics of Dopefish, and these baby Dopefishs? smilies/dopefish.gif
Which reminds me, will the Mama Dopefish be in the game? smilies/dopefish.gif

I don't think anybody takes what you say seriously Joe. smilies/images/icons/grin.gif
Anyways, I don't think John or Tom should have ran to the press about the Dopefish in their games. It takes a lot of the fun out of it.
Like id Soft's Dopefish in Quake 3: Arena. Sure it was found almost instantly, but you didn't see Carmack running around acting all "cool" about it before the game even hit the shelf.
Easter Eggs seem to have lost all their meanings. In the old games, I'm sure there are still eggs that haven't been openly discovered for maybe 10 years. But when a developer sends people screenshots, and a website pumps out a step by step guide with save games to get to these areas, what's the point? Where's the challenge? Where's the adventure?
I remember finding bugs in the NES's games and a bunch of my pals would sit around and laugh, but we never found these things in a Nintendo Power. We found these things by ****ing around untill the game revealed its secrets. Either by accident, by some random act of goofiness, a desprate leap to free yourself from the grasp of a hungry villian or just a itch in your belly that that wall just ain't right.
I had hoped Tom would have learned from the loud mouthed braggart John and kept a tight lip about everything, even the Dopefish. Maybe Warren Spector did have the right idea...

First off - they didn't. I did that - with their permission. I realize that's close to the same thing, but remember who started that.
Second, if you think that simply the Dopefish's appearance will "take a lot of fun out of the game" then you need a new perspective. Dopefish is one small cameo character in a cast of a helluva lot. One minor character spoiler does not affect the enjoyment of a game.

Why do I find it really hard to believe you're going to buy a game based on the fact that it has a Dopefish?
Guest
07-06-2001, 06:01 AM
I agree with moonbuzz, why would you buy a game only because it has a Dopefish in it?
You'd better grab tons of screenshots and stuff like that from the net, print it out and put it on the wall above your bed with all the other Dopefish fanstuff.
I don't have any room left, all those playboy maganzines take up too much space :P
...just be a little bit more realistic next time.
