If they're uploaded on the net, use url
If they aren't, add them as attachments on the post creation form.

You have two ways:
Upload an attachment, this can be done using the manage attachments option at the bottom of the post message screen. Just keep in mind that most files need to be kept under 100kb
The attachment will show up as thumbnail at the bottom of your post, if you want it to be inline, then use the attachmentid where attachmentid is the number that belongs to the attachment.[more info (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/misc.php?do=bbcode#attach)]
your other option is to use an image host like Image Shack (http://www.inageshack.us) Upload the image there, and then copy/paste the code they provide into the message
If the image already exists on a server, the simply use http://link.to/yourimage.jpg you need to keep in mind that many websites out there don't like you 'hot-linking' their images, they will usually replace the image with another image chiding you for hotlinking. even 3DR does this.

BTW, it is a good idea to practice resizing, cropping and compressing images to save bandwidth. reducing color depth is a also good idea if you can get away with it. my tool of choice is Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) for any of these tasks. It is best to stick with JPGa and PNGs. Use GIFs only if you want animated images.

oh, and if anyone wants post bb codes in their message without resorting to odd tricks, then let me introduce you to the wonders of (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/misc.php?do=bbcode#noparse)

I always use Imageshack, don't like to add to any attachment/space congestion here.

Firstly edit your post if you need to make amendments. You don't need to post 3 minutes later to add something else.

Secondly it's under the FAQ as "Are there any special codes/tags I can use to markup my posts?" (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_vb_special_codes) , which will then link you to all the markup available at this page. (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/misc.php?do=bbcode)

The keyword everybody is using is upload. You need to upload the image somewhere first before you can post it in the forum. I gave you a choice between a forum attachment or using an image host like Imageshack.

I'm a little short on time right now so I can't do a step by step walkthough, however somebody else might be gracious enough
