Hoping to match its massive success with the "Spider-Man" film franchise, Columbia Pictures announced today that it plans to bring another superhero to the big screen -- The Green Hornet.

The Green Hornet made his debut on radio in 1936, the creation of George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created the Lone Ranger. "The Green Hornet" program had a one-year stint on television in 1966 with Van Williams in the title role and then little-known Bruce Lee co-starring as the Hornet's sidekick, Kato.

Neal Moritz, the producer of "Gridiron Gang" and "Click," will produce "The Green Hornet" film.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to be developing this world renowned property with the people who brought Spider-Man to the screen," Moritz said. "I can't imagine a studio better equipped or more prepared to handle this kind of material than Sony. With the radio show, television program, comic books and novels, there is ample source material to bring this classic crime-fighter to life."

"The Green Hornet" radio series ran until 1952, following the adventures of Britt Reid, a playboy who inherits his father's newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. He saves the life of Kato, who becomes his ally and helps transform Britt's car into the supercharged "Black Beauty."

The Green Hornet later became a comic book superhero.

A production schedule for the film was not immediately announced.

Maybe in the US. In Hong Kong, Lee's home country, he was a national star. When the Green Hornet program went overseas, they renamed it The Cato Show!

What? "The Green Hornet"? Are they that desperate? They impossibly can be running out of super heroes. There's, like, ten thousand of them.

The Green Hornet's been discussed for ages. Last I heard, Kevin Smith was supposed to be writing a script for this (around Jersey Girl but before Superman Returns). We had a thread about this with Tony Jaa as the popular choice for Kato.

My favorite Bruce Lee story:

In a cross-over story featuring characters from The Green Hornet in an episode of Batman starring Adam West and Burt Ward, the script called for Robin (Burt Ward) to defeat Cato (Bruce Lee). When Lee learned of it, he became furious and let everybody know that he planned on taking out Burt Ward for real! The producers averted disaster, however, by offering the compromise of letting the characters fight to a draw, and Lee agreed. However, I imagine poor Burt Ward was still terrified when it came time to shoot that scene!

Kevin Smith was originally going to write and direct but he felt that the studio, instead of him, would have too much control over the film, thus, he just wrote it and gave the directing job to someone else.

Wasn't there some shitty Jet Li movie which was already inspired by this character?

Scraping the bottom? I think the bottom has fallen out a long time ago...

That movie would be "The Black Mask" :)

SETH ROGEN.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Green_Hornet#Recent_developments

On June 4, 2008 Sony Pictures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Pictures_Entertainment) announced that, through their subsidiary Columbia Pictures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Pictures), they are going ahead with plans for a feature film of the superhero. Set to be released on June 25, 2010, they said, the film is to star Seth Rogen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth_Rogen), who along with Evan Goldberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evan_Goldberg), will also take on writing duties.[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Green_Hornet#cite_note-18) Later, Sony Pictures announced that the Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong) action/comedy star Stephen Chow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Chow) would direct the film as well as play the role of Kato.[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Green_Hornet#cite_note-19) However, due to creative differences, Chow is not going to direct.[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Green_Hornet#cite_note-20) According to the Associated Press and WENN[clarification needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)], Chow wanted to direct a superhero spoof with Jack Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Black) in the lead role. It has been announced that Columbia Pictures is in talks with Michel Gondry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Gondry) to direct the film.

Yeah... I thought that Seth Rogen starring in it had been known for a while. It was a big reason he dropped around 30 to 40 pounds after doing Pineapple Express and Zack and Miri.
He really slimmed down for this movie.

As for Stephen Chow dropping out, that does suck... I would've loved for him to direct it... but I'm also glad he didn't get his way. I can't stand Jack Black.

I'd have at least prefered Jack Black to Seth Rogan. The ******* might be a decent writer maybe, but I find him to be completely uninteresting at best and annoying at worst as any kind of main character in a movie.

He kind of reminds me of Shia LeBallsack or whatever his name is from transformers. Both make me want to ask if either or both of the have family members that are film producers or something, as I can't figure out any reason why they'd be given the parts in movies that they get.

Seth Rogen started out on freaks and geeks with Judd Apatow. Also had a small role in Donnie Darko. :D

For those who enjoy Apatow's comedies (and I do :)), Rogan is a good fit.

So true he really annoys me(The worst is I find him unfunny and boring) and I have yet to see a movie he's written or acted in that I enjoyed.

Cato one-inch-punches Robin while he's too busy dicking around with his utility belt. :D
