Does anyone know why General was closed? I wasn't very active recently, so could someone please fill me in?

Thanks.

This thread will self destruct within a few hours.

Basically dude got sick of the Fnord board and so that was gone, then got sick of GM so that was handed off to ADM (ex-moderator) but then since that was a more loose forum there were a few asshats that ruined the vibe and I guess that didn't work out.

Now, no idea. We all want answers but we're getting the door slammed shut.

I think the feeling was that 3DR wants a strictly gaming forum without the personal opinions concerning politics, religion, aliens, UFOs,conspiracy theories and sexual encounters. I was one that had to rethink my approach in posting here but I am glad now as this should be mainly a gaming and popular media forum.

I don't like to get into this forum politics nonsense, but I just have to say - some of us kind of miss the general messages section. I've taken to hanging around Shacknews as a replacement, but frankly it's rather impersonal and cold compared to how this place once was.

Sure it got rowdy at times, but frankly what good is a forum without debates and disagreements?

Joe had every reason to close it though. It was getting out of hand. Ever since the fnord merged people had no clue what was to be posted, and as a result it was nonsensical. I don't blame him, and frankly I'd have done the same thing. However I think a better solution would have been to make the rules a little more clear - because I can't be the only one who hasn't the slightest clue what "fnord" was meant to be in the first place. General became "Misc Posts Section" and thus was a wasted effort.

It's up to him though, it's his forum. Not ours.

I know it's pretty obvious to most of us, but I think the reasoning for the disappearance of the General Discussion board ought to be stickied and locked so people won't keep asking.

There's my $0.02.

Well guys if you want to talk about politics, religion, aliens, UFOs, conspiracy theories and sexual encounters then you will have to do it at the thanksgiving table with your family or something. This is 3DR and in Texas you see Bullshit scrappers out the front of a lot of homes. These scrappers aren't nesacarily for your boots either, your tongue seems to get bullshit everywhere nowadays.

I miss the Art thread... and i know for a fact that others do that as well...
not too lont ago, the art thread got re-posted in the Media section... i think this was a great idea... Art is a kind of media as well afterall...
I don't want to sound rude, as if i didn't respect what mods want with this forum, but i see absolutely no reason for this particular popular respected thread to be removed... It started as Gen-messages material, but i'm sure it can live on in the media section, without giving anyone a headache...

So if it's all supposed to be games and media, please concider Art as media as well, and let us keep this kind of thread... i'd really like it back...

Will i get killed now..? :o

But 3DR has awlays wanted a purely gaming forum, if I remember right some of these sections were added to stop people posting stuff in other areas.

If someone really wants to post something they will put it wherever they can.

This forum does seem to be running out of steam a bit, we need another game to kick start it again...

I'm a little curious as to exactly who finally decided to shut it down. It doesn't sound like Joe, IMO. Did anyone else find the "Never" entries a little bit spiteful? It almost felt like an intentional slap in the face.

Regarding the "games only" forum though, lacking a general topics area creates a rift in the natural behavior of a community. People on here become friends, aquaintances, enemies, whatever, and by human nature don't wish to limit their conversations to a narrow topic of discussion. Sooner or later someone is going to ask, "Who do you think is going to the Stanley Cup?" The usual response to things like this is, "Use PM's", but that possibility breaks down the very moment more than 2 people are involved. At that point you'd need some kind of an archaic listserv.

I reckon we should invent a vest that inflicts pain and hook it up to a FPS and have a jolly old time playing death matches against each other.
"where did you get the bruises?"
"That dragonflyWolfTen ******* I met in the 3DR virtual death match site".:D

What bugs me is Leafyisle closing. No GM? Joe doesn't want to deal with the shit, so fine. But No replacement at all?

No fair. :( LI kicked ass.

I wondered where LI went. I registered there, forgot, remembered, went to find the forum and It didn't work. I even googled my username and there was already a thread about me, without me even posting once :D

Personally I'm not too bothered about the loss of GM. The only problem is that gaming news is so slow these days that the gaming discussion consists mostly of old, continually re-bumped threads, and trying to find a game that Phait likes.

Yeah, I'm kinda bothered that there was no announcement. However, Joe just sent me a PM and said that he'll explain it soon. :)

Haha, so true it's funny.

Ya, I mean, the thread about the recent shootings so belonged in a Gen Messages forum. It was very easy to drag it off-topic from games to a general discussion, and nobody complained. It was a predictable evolution.

Having to bend relevancy to discuss things like this sucks.

Bring back LI.

Or.. you know.. another forum? There are others out there on this mysterious thing we people call the internet.

You guys want a general messages forum? Go to genmay.com.

ADM you are/were the coolest moderator. Once again I am sorry about all the vomit up and down the hallway but you know I couldn't find the bathroom. I seen that chick that was at the party again and she is STILL on crutches, she said she might need surgery. I am glad she didn't recognize me, so glad you brought all those Joe Siegler masks for us. poor girl is probably scared for life after that night even more so now that she is pregnant. Hey man if we ever do it again you got to be the moderator. :D

cheers

PS
they fixed the damage to the front of the beer store but you can still see our tire marks going right through the place.

He's already given his reasons. He didn't want to deal with the growing number of nonsense posts so he moved it to an offsite location. LI then became a heaping mound of spam, flames and general BS and was therefore closed.

I couldn't tell you why the General section is there right now, probably just a placeholder until Joe figures out what he wants to do.

I liked GM, it actually formed relationships in the community. Yeah, talking about games and stuff is good but you don't really know anyone if all you talk about is how much Steam sucks and how long it has been since we have seen anything from DNF. Also, there are all sorts of stuff that was discussed, not just nonsense.
I am acquiring a server at the end of the semester from my boss here and don't know what to do with it. If I find a way, I honestly wouldn't mind hosting a forum type thing or something. I like discussion, discussion with people who don't always agree with me, that is how you learn.
But this is a game forum, so learning and growing isn't here.

Does anyone know why General was closed? I wasn't very active recently, so could someone please fill me in?

In short, the level of nonsense and just stupid arguments killed it.

These forums are for a gaming company; the fact that users can post about other stuff is an added bonus as it does develop a sense of community. General Messages was one such bonus that was unfortunately abused after some time and became more of a hassle then a bonus for mods to moderate. Several different approaches were taken to keep it alive however they just didn't work out as hoped so unfortunately Gen. Messages will remain closed.

The amount of grief and nonsense that arose from some folks made it to much work to keep it from becoming a complete wasteland, which I will never allow the forums to become. We tried a more lenient method with TLI, and those of you who were there for that know what happened there. I tried asking, I tried begging, I tried threatening. It didn't work. Lesson learned. I don't want the headaches of dealing with that anymore, so off goes it's head so to speak.

Additionally, in the month or so where TLI has been gone, and Gen Msgs has been closed here, we haven't gotten many requests for info about it. I polled the staff here and asked them about how many msgs they got from people asking. Combined between the staff, they got less than ten queries, and I myself got about half a dozen to 10 or so. That's not exactly a groundswell of support for it to remain, either.

If you have any further questions, please direct them to me in a PM.

Edit: I got a couple of questions about this... This decision means that things that would have been posted in Gen Msgs shouldn't be posted, nor are there plans to bring them back.

Edit 2: Please read Edit 1.
