I hope Joe will at least award prizes for the last picture. I submitted an entry that I at least thought was pretty funny(regarding George playing Geometry Wars).

Maybe it is just too tiring or stressful to try to get pictures every month. Wasn't there a decision some time back that current employees couldn't get named or have their faces shown on the site due to Area51 style rules regarding basically everything?
Although if that is the case, maybe having one every quarter (3 months) would be easier. Then there would be 4 a year and would probably see more participation per picture as well as better opportunities to have good pictures ready for the contest.

Maybe by the time DNF is done, everyone will have the gift certificates? :dopefish:

he closed it down because there were only a few people who participated over the last few months AFAIR.

As I said when the contest closed, it just died due to the lack of entries. The last contest had less than 20 entries. It just got to the point where there wasn't worth the work needed to put into keeping it going.
Yeah, I probably should go back and finish it, but it's EXTREMELY low on the priority chart.

If it were a picture editing contest I would have entered every time.

Well captions level the playing field for those who lack image manipulation skills.
I wouldn't mind seeing an unofficial "Photoshop Phriday" kind of thread though.

I'd love that :D

We would need to organize things and think up some really good material and subject matter though.
Also, I really don't know how many people would want to participate.

No, I won't be doing that any time soon. Especially not right after closing Gen Msgs. You guys should know what happens. Every time a photo thread/forum gets started it dies out due to lack of interest.
Anyway, since the original question was answered, I'm closing the thread, since I don't want this to be an all purpose "can we do this" thread.

I have not decided to revive the contest, but I have decided to go through and finish off the last seven contests I left hanging when I decided to stop earlier in the year. I didn't realize I haven't picked any winners in a little over a YEAR. Granted, I haven't run any new contests in 2007, but still.. :)
I did these two this afternoon:

I've thought about bringing it back from time to time - the problem is that the last two contests had under 25 submissions each. That's just not enough especially when most of them were from the same 2-3 people.

Perhaps it's simlpy a matter of how good people find the photos used... sometimes it maybe be too hard to make anything, and poeple think "i'll skip this one"...
Sicne i stated submitting, i also skippe a few, simply because i had nothing funny enough to contribute...
You could also make a Poll anytime, both asking if enough people would like it back, and introduce it to those who are unfamilar with it...
That's a poll that only counts forum members of course, then you need to count poeple outside the forums as well, there might be more, or less out there...
I'd deffenately (as one) send in submissions as long as the photo being used for that month is good enough for me to make up something i find worthy to suggest and submit

I don't go with "good photo", because I've put up some crap ones over the years and gotten a ton of responses. The other thing is I was keeping them up for almost a month at a time towards the end, and I was still getting a tiny response.
Part of it was my own fault, because I'd neglect it and let 5-6 contests go by without picking winners, but I don't think that's the major part of the decline.

I think part of why I over time lost interest was the lack of unique pictures. I'd assumed the rules about secrecy regarding who works there probably prevented most pictures from being usable.

I claim my not-all-so-perfect English for this, but what i meant with 'good' photos, were photos that I personally find good to add captions for... Some photos that i don't find 'good' are those that of which i can't think any caption for...
I guess there's another word for this, but you get what i try to say with this i guess...
It's a pending thing though, that's what i tried to say... sometimes alot of poeple get good ideas, other times it's only a few creative minds who get some good stuff to add...
All hypothetically speaking, i honestly don't know, but i don't think excluding this being fair, because i think it sounds failry possible...
Heh, as if this would change anyones point of view though...

So, what startet the dive? The lack of entries or your own lack of time?
If your interest took a dive because of lack of entries in the first place, I can understand it, but on the other hand, if you don't pick any winners in over a year ANY contest would be doomed. I'm surprised that you got any entries at all in the end. Sort of a hen&egg situation.
I was never very active in the competition, but I enjoyed reading the entries. As I remember it, it always took months before the winning entries were picked out, and then usually several competitions were judged at the same time to catch up.
If you consider taking the competition up again, I think you should make sure that you have the time to make it a regular event that people can look forward to. Of course it might not be possible for you to make it a fix day of the month or so, but I think people need continuity and the feeling that it's an "important" and fun event even to you to keep the entries coming.

The fact that I let it slide probably had something to do with it, but it had started to go downhill before that to be honest.
I even tried things like doubling my original length of two weeks to a month per entry, and it made no difference.

I wouldnt bring it back until there is a DNF announcement. Currently we just don't have the user base that these fourms once had.

What the..I actually won the Prey one! I remember checking the results for a while because I thought mine was pretty good (had some others published in the past). Well, I was reading some news regarding DNF and thought 'lets pop onto the 3DR site..' (I don't visit as much as I did some years ago). Gotta say I was pretty surprised.. :o
Guess I can now die a happy man and cross off 'win 3DR camera contest' of the 'things to be accomplished before dying' :p
Let's see if there was anything up for grabs.. ;)
EDIT: Seems like I already have original copies of most of the games that interest me from shop.
If (if) I won the certificate and, if possible (and not too much hassle), something of the same value
(although I understand $35 of 3DR products naturally isn't the same as $35) can be send to the Childs Play charity thing instead.

Hi everyone. I am new here. :)
I feel like a dummy who needs someone to explain a joke.
In this camera captioning contest:
http://www.3drealms.com/camera/052899.html
The winning caption "After seeing this photo, John Carmack started eating his wheaties."
Can someone please explain to me why is this funny? Thanks.
