View Full Version : Do you play an MMO?

I'm a little curious on how many people here devote time to an MMO or possibly more than one. I know lately that the scene has gotten fairly big, and there are tonnes on the horizon, with almost every second developer planning on creating one, but the question remains - how many people are willing to part with money (in most cases), and do they have enough time to still explore and enjoy other games?

And for the record, I've never played any of them, and am interested to know what the stats are around here. :)

Edit: Damn poll options! Can a mod please add a yes or no poll option please? :)

Nope.

My friend wants me to get into WOW, but it's too cartoony and I don't want to pay a monthly fee anyway.

The biggest thing that, from appearance - bugs me about MMO games (mostly MMORPGs) is theres information overload - people chatting in multiple colors, player nametags hovering everywhere - look at wow, it's a user interface nightmare, ******* icons everywhere... Jacob Neilsen would freak :p Also it seems most MMORPGs are just hack n' slash/leveling/gold mongering - that'd get boring quick.

No, and I'm not planning to.

I play some games on the Wii, but the rest of my time I'd rather spend on something else than computers.

World of warcraft. It's about $15 a month, and it's worth it to me because I enjoy the game very much. I don't buy new games as often to even the cost.
I do "have enough time to still explore and enjoy other games". Why the hell wouldn't I?

Nope.

Well I have seen people spend countless hours on MMO (talk about my housemates who burn most of their time in virtual reality world) but I don't have the time to play it and most importantly monthly subs is a no no to me (I know most Asian MMO are free to play but there is a catch, some items need real money to buy).

Played WoW while it was in Beta, after that and before it haven't played any. It was fun with a friend, but consumes time as much as you are willing to put in to it. WoW offers value for the money, but it can get a bit repetive if you don't have a friend to play with. Can't say I would be interested in playing one in the near future. I enjoy RTS games, and those I play quite frenquently with friends.

Yes. The first MMo I played was Starwars Galaxies(which I regretted). Then after 2 of my friends convinced me I started playing WoW. Which i find enjoyable unlike SWG.

The first and only MMO I've played is WoW, but that got boring after a year. ;)

I played City of Heroes for about a year or so. Pretty fun game, but I lost interest when they shifted development to PvP. Only MMO I've played. Nothing out there that interests me right now.

I once played on free shards of Ultima Online. While I did find some fun, it eventually showed it's true colours. All I was doing was grinding without any purpose. I'd forge armour only to have it stolen. Quests were basic and very limited, unless they were custom fanmade ones. Being a shopkeeper was dull and very limited.

Basically there was nothing to do. All the stories I'd heard about UO were fluff. It simply didn't have the life and atmosphere of Ultima VII. Even though there was hundreds of people per area, they still felt like ghost towns due to the lack of interactivity and empty houses. What happened to the rich world that was Ultima?

I simply can't justify paying monthly for something like that. I've read about WOW and it doesn't appeal to me at all. Pouring hundreds of dollars into subscription fees just doesn't work when I don't get my money's worth.

I dont play any but I'd like to give one a try. White wolfs World of Darkness is getting the MMO treatment and that seems right up my alley

The beauty of WoW is that you can decide exactly what your UI looks like and what information you want to be shown. And the other thing that the interface in WoW isn't all that cluttered in the beginning. After 20-30 levels or so, when you have dozens of skills to use, it starts to show, though.

I tried Guild Wars. I bored me to tears.

1. Guild Wars isn't an MMO
2. You bore me to tears too. ;)

Star Wars Galaxies Pre-CU was awesome, as well as Pre-NGE - it was very active with lots of players, and lots of activities to do with others (hunting groups) - it was just, IMO, the ultimate MMO. But then they got a new dev team and fired the others - and so came the NGE. But just recently there's been a new dev team, and the ones who worked on the NGE were either fired or moved somewhere else (Julio Torres, the main guy, was moved to the new Star Wars game with all the groovy physics - god help that game). Based on the updates lately, the game is turning in a new direction, possibly better than pre-NGE.

I don't play MMOs simply because I have no interest in paying $180/yr for a single game.

I had very similar experiences with UO. WoW grabbed me by the balls.

I encourage you to ignore what whiners say about WoW and give it a chance.

My friend wants me to get into WOW, but it's too cartoony

Heh. about 2 million people have said that, and had their minds changed by the game.

ever played a MMO. I'm more of a single player guy.

I'm a lone wolf/focks in all the games I play. WoW is very solo friendly except for raids at higher level. No-one holds a gun to your head and makes you do 5-mans/raid anyway.

and do they have enough time to still explore and enjoy other games?

I did.

The first month I played wow it grabbed me, and I played it compulsively like any other new game. I was playing half a dozen hours a day.

But later it changed. As I got more familiar with the world and happy being in it, the game became more like TV than a movie. More comfortable and relaxing. Still fun, but in different ways. I'd play a couple of hours a night at most.

In the evening I'd chillax in Ironforge, scout auctions, craft a bit, then maybe go questing, alt-tabbing out during during flights to check forums. Playing a bit of music in the background while lurking looking for horde to kill. A sort of social 'compound' experience.

Then I'd pop out for a bit of Halo.

I don't play MMOs simply because I have no interest in paying $180/yr for a single game.

You can't look at an MMO and say mathematically 'X games' value, because the experiences you'll have, the things you'll be a part of, they are deeper, more immersive, more social, more diverse, more memorable than any standard game.

It's like having a game of football with your mates. The game is football, but the social interaction and pissing about is what is more fun and memorable.

I would have paid 2x what I did. It was that amazing an experience.

I won't ever pay monthly for an MMO so it doesn't matter anyway. There isn't much point in me trying out the trial if I have no intention of buying it.

I got largely the same experience with Guild Wars for the one time asking price of $50. :)

Look, I understand the fun that can be had with an online community, and I certainly appreciate why people are drawn into that kind of thing, but that simply isn't worth $180/yr to me. Now if someone ever released an MMO with a $50/yr subscription then I might be interested.

As alreay mentioned I've played WOW and so far I like it. I need some more steady cash flow ATM though.. Bofore I buy more game cards.

and yeah you can disable those howering names in the options menu or make them limited IIRC.. maybe even make the chat in one colur.. if not people can always make GUI mods to change this..

No, I won't. I don't care how fun it is, it's not worth that much money. I so rarely play games that regularly, why would I throw my money in the trash for subscription service? Sometimes I'll stop playing a game for weeks, only to come back later. If I did this with an MMO I'd be wasting a hell of a lot of money wouldn't I?

If you're not missing the game, don't go back to it. BC is more of the same raid-fest, because Blizz is adding/ has added another 20 man raid...... when there's about 4 raids in the new expansion.

The thing I really liked about City of Heroes before they implemented PvP was that it was like a big 3rd person co-op game (though you could solo.) Had a couple of good friends playing it with me at the time. It was pretty fun. But yeah, it gets to the point where $15 a month is not worth it.

I loved the original Guild Wars (logged almost 160 hours in it), but Factions was tedious and pretty much put me right off the franchise. I haven't bothered with Nightfall, and whenever I venture on to the original Guild Wars, as I do from time to time, the game feels all but deserted as most folks have moved on to the latest chapter, and Guild Wars simply isn't much fun as a solo game.

It seems the general status of MMO's around these forums is fairly low. I don't have enough time to really sit down and play games, let alone devoting vast swathes of time to a game which I'd have to pay for (in most cases) to play. If I had time I'd be interested in giving WoW a try (since I like RPG's), but as a few people told me, if you start playing, you're generally hooked. :p
Seems most around here aren't willing to continually fork out for the experience, even if it is a good one. Maybe I'm just antisocial, but I enjoy my SP games a whole lot! :dopefish: :D

Eh, I used to play some EQ 1, but then they just made it too easy, giving out stuff such as backpacks, clothing(cheap armor), decent weapons. Kinda pissed me off when I have a lvl 8 character who only has a rusty short sword, and a loaf of bread, and I see lvl 3 characters with better equipment. I did like the fact that they took some XP away from you if you died, it helped prevent army's of lvl 12 characters from rushing Hill Giants.

Overall though, Im more of a single-player guy. F.E.A.R., Fable, Oblivion, etc.
