There are really good drawings here. I sometimes think how people can draw this good. :o
I might post some of my drawings too if I have access to a scanner but they look like phallus when compared to these pictures in this thread. :(

Haha... :tinyted:
I prefer it because i get curves and limbs better abnd easier that way...
originally she was supposed to wear clothes, so the two uh-huh's and the hm-hmm shouldn't have been there in the first place, eliminating the need to censore it... ut the people in the 3DR forums steam community chat demanded "boobs!!!" whenever i asked them what they thought of it...
I'll have to remove all that anyways, i need to draw the clothes, and it's going to be bothersome, because i dislike drawing clothes or any kind of fabric for that matter... Duke's clothes are easy at least, that's just a tight shirt and some pants, hahaha...
On another note, i drew one of Laffer's younger brothers (at least the face)... He's appearantly a HIM fan

Doing a few quick cover pose ideas. I still want one where he is in mid-jump with a bow & arrow pointed directly at you, would be awesome. Hard to figure out the foreshortening though.

Ignore what other artists tell you and copy the pose from a picture.
You'll eventually get the routine to draw from your mind.
Plus you'll have it easier if you really at some point decide to study anatomy to actually create poses from your mind - which isn't a trivial task you can get to only by drawing on blank paper without any external reference.

Here, I printed out a scan of the line art so far, and practiced shading on it. You can see it better on paper, but I tried to pop out the pencil here without doing it too much. I think I'm getting the hang of it, but it's still tricky - what do I do with the armor "pecs" - leave them mostly blank? Things like that.

I really like Marko Djurddjevic's idea here about line drawing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhF4fBetN4Y
Also some art http://www.splashpageart.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=42 he does some of my fav. Daredevil covers
This drawing isn't mine, it's Marko's, but I quickly colored a panel to see how it'd look, because I'm considering drawing in this style. It's more relaxed for me, meaning - I don't have to be detail obsessed or worry about real hard shadows and inking. What do you think of this style vs. traditional comics?

I dunno if it's my scanner, but scans just never look very good. I play around with levels, contrast etc and they just blow. I came up with a weird idea though: place a standard white sheet in front of the original drawing (which I did shade-tracing over my line art), so when it scans you get this really diffused scan, no line detail. Then overlay that onto the line art and you can see some shading pop out some.
But it's kinda messy way of doing it, unless that's your style.

Kleyman, you're creations are . . .odd. But in a good way :D
As far as getting the lighting right, maybe it just needs a little more contrast. You already have the white of the paper showing through, perhaps you could try darkening some areas up?

I'd love to give you tips, but i'm better at showing with pics than i could explain with words, hahaha :D
Well, i guess i could say that i think there needs some shading below the eye, because the upper jaw seems to extend below the eye(s)...
lighting looks fine though, you defnitely aren't making up a nonexistant random lightsource :D

Like giving the monster a little bit of "color" so that it distinguishes(sp?) itself from the beackground? Actually he(It's a "he" :D) is ought to be white(like a chicken) so you think it'd be wiser if I made places where light hits with an angle of 90 degrees angle pure white and other places more gray/dark gray.

That could work. I'd be interested to see him in full color - I know he's white, but I'm curious to see how you would handle his eye.
You could also try toying with his texture. He looks furry / feathery to me, maybe you could incorporate some more of that into the darker areas and make it less noticeable in the areas hit by light.

Yes, he is furry. The stripes on his down-left side are not white though(They change color, intensity and thickness according to the mood he's in. No, I'm not high :p), I'll try to get the furry feeling on as you say. Also I need to fix his nose. It doesn't look so good.

Here's another drawing I made couple of days ago. It's not finished yet (As you can see) and I'm too lazy to continue drawing it. This took me about 40 - 45 minutes. This is a very interesting drawing for me, not because of the design (I made it up as I went), but because it's the first time I've attempted a completely different technique to my own -- and I have to say, it went quite well. I never once felt like giving up.
Usually, I draw basic guide shapes/cylinders, but here I just started drawing lightly and then quickly drawing throughout, mostly at first the face. It was one drawing where I had very little, if any, worry.
I had watched Marko Djurdevic work, from one of his DVDs and his process inspired me. I'm surprised I didn't **** up greatly with this technique, and ultimately surprised I'm happy with the results!
Checkout a sample of his process http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcNpCgWSwyc
Anyway, now that I look at it, it looks like a demented Damien :p

dan2091 -
It's good, it really is; stick with it, learn from others' work, and you'll always get better.
But if you're trying to pick up girls on drawings, you'd better be damn good. :p
With that said, I've got two pointers:
1 - The eyes. They're a bastard, I know, but if you draw them just a sliver off what they're supposed to be, it shows. The same can be said with any anatomy, but eyes are particularly unforgiving; giving someone a slightly elongated nose or ear is one thing, making them cross-eyed is another.
2 - The teeth. Never, ever draw the spaces between teeth that dark, especially when they're the darkest part of the drawing. Right now, they read as gaps, and unless your ladyfriend does have gapped teeth, well... it just looks wrong.
I'm not trying to bust your balls, but I'm not telling you anything a good portraiture instructor wouldn't, either.
If it's any reassurance, the nose came out good; lots of people screw up noses.
Keep it up, and let us know how that date went. :D

thanks! I stopped doing Dukes a day since we technically got an official press release but I'm still working on the model. Also, Illustrator can be a bitch with livepaint groups: it keeps shifting the outlines when I fill them in so that version is like the 7th of many.
What kind of eraser/pencil do you use? Just regular? The lines are very clean on your work and even when I clean mine up I get too much smudging to do thin lines without going insane.

Not too bad Derfernet, looks like a younger Duke, seems that everyone is doing the "Duke Hope" thing now. I'm seeing it all over duke4.net, at least you made the effort on making your own Duke. Well done.

re: young duke
ya, when I put it through posterize (first step of the process) it loses a lot of detail. I might have to just do it in illustrator by drawing them in but I like it how it is this way too so I'll just have a bunch of versions

It would be interesting trying out Zbrush, i heard it's really cool, and it appears to create some really impressive 3D stuff like faces etc... :o

Mostly it's just a regular pencil, i sharpen it many times during a drawing to keep it pointy for the details... I also have a mechanical pencil, that what i used above, but the thickness is about the same as a regular pencil, i just don't have to sharpen it every now and then anymore (i do have to turn and twist it in a certain angle every time though, since the surface of the lead itselsf gets flatter and worn out after each stroke)
I also erase alot, not removing though, but refining lines that are too thick, to make then really thin...
People usually comment alot more on my linework than my style or anything else, i think it's funy people notice...

What you described is basically what I do 'cept I keep accidentally erasing lines that I try to "refine". Then comes the stupid smudging. D:
People usually comment alot more on my linework than my style or anything else, i think it's funy people notice...
I always think of linework as part of one's style: it just goes along with things like form and shit. I do like the rest of your style though, it's stylized but detailed, very unique.

Though, the right hand on the girl seems weird. I think the way she bends her arm at the elbow and the position of her hand is anatomically not quite correct. I don't know exactly what it is, just looks ...strange... to me.

What's your process? Everybody goes about it in a different way.
I don't know anybody that doesn't work from lightest to darkest. Harder pencils work best for light shadows, and softer ones for darker areas. Work slow - don't try to cover huge areas quickly. If you do, it'll often be uneven. working with a number of pencils can also help you get a much smoother transition between light and dark. Finally, if you're working from a model and find it hard to tell where the shadows shift and fade, try squinting at it a little bit. It helps you see the contrast between light and shadow.

What's your process? Everybody goes about it in a different way.
I try to see where the light comes from, and how the shadows would end up. I don't do a lot of drawings of actual stuff, just whatever I'd like to see on paper, so it's mostly guessing to see what works. I actually work from dark to light. Start with the stuff that doesn't have any (or very little) light on it and go from there. Kind of try to get a gradient going from there.
I'll try to whip up/find a sample of what mine end up like.
Edit: Alright, here's a quick 'n dirty sketch. I'm already seeing tons of problems but this is just an impression so whatever :)

07-26-2009, 09:09 AM
Two days ago I tried to pay attention to how I do it and I seem to vaguely lay out the shadows first. Just one quick light shade for all the shadows. Then I go back to their root, that is to where it's supposed to be the darkest and draw other, darker shade. Go back again and add another layer and so on until I get to the darkest point. I also try to change direction of my strokes and to keep them relatively short (but sweet). Hope that helps.

I finally have some pictures of my first abstract paintings. I've never been this personally invested in something I've done before. Quite an experience.

Detail of "Anchors".

"Luck" looks nice, mainly because it seems to have more depth with the 7's (i assume those are numbers) and whatnot being behind that large 3 in the foreground... Like it's a deep void of lucky numbers, rather than a 2 dimensional image with them plastered over it...
The close-up of Anchors makes it look more interesting actually, the details really get lost from a distance, but the highlights on it look much more interesting once you get this close...
In other words, i think it's pretty cool stuff :D

That's right, I doubt there's anything else referred as "Painter". Or then I've too missed out on something.
