Can you draw? Show off your talents by posting your creations here.

This thread is called "Good Art", because posting of crappy gibberish line art drawings in MS Paint are not welcome. If you ignore this, your post will be mercilessly deleted, without warning, and we'll kick a few puppies in your name as well.

I would prefer that you use places like www.imageshack.us to host your images, and not use the file attachments here unless necessary.

/me can hear Micki! rejoicing at the return of this one.

I designed this for acoustic/folk musician & friend John Statz ( http://www.johnstatz.com )

It will be printed at 11 x 17 along with postcard size. Although just that print suffers from a slight red cast as it was a Kinkos digital print, just for my portfolio. So reprint is in order.

/me can hear Micki! rejoicing at the return of this one.

That's indeed what i'm doing :woot:

This is a random drawing i made of Duke...
It was actually drawn on a small piece of paper, so the pencil lines look sort of thick and unclear as i have rezised it to a bigger size... It's not very big even when it's rezised though, so i won't thumbnail it

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/7483/dukeheadxa2.jpg

I'm happy this thread has returned :)

Phait's pic above looks cool btw, i like it

Well since I'm an art student at the moment so it is more than happy for me for the Good Art Thread make a return! (squeals cos it is the best gift ever for me since it is my birthday today though now burning the midnight oil doing movie assignments)

Here's some work which I have post in my DeviantART gallery:

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9672/kylestahndamy2.th.jpg (http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9672/kylestahndamy2.jpg) http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/3062/isitfinallydoneyq0.th.jpg (http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/3062/isitfinallydoneyq0.jpg) http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/682/tobeydabz3.th.jpg (http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/682/tobeydabz3.jpg)

I'm not sure how many people here actually like manga art style but I for one grown up with manga hence my art style though I still love drawing realistic work.

Btw all my work are done in Photoshop and Painter.

Great rendering of Tobey, spotted that right away.

Micki, angular features on Duke could make for some good shading, so add some shading!

@huey
It's my understanding (or at least, this is how i am) for any artist to respect, and understand any art style...

That said, i also like Manga style drawings, as well as anything else of course...
Your stuff looks cool, i really like the colors (especially because i suck with colors, i never really do colors :o so it's cool seeing what i have to catch up with :D) Peter Parker is REALLY cool :D
This is a recent Drawing i have made, which also is Manga Styled:

@Phait
It's just a small sketch, of a random drawing :o
I wouldn't bother shading small stuff like that, i leave that to fully sized actual drawings :o

^^ Wow I really like how you keep your artwork neat Micki!!

Your pencil strokes are clean and preferably you can improve your proportions and perspectives in your future work.

Since you can handle pencils really well you should explore colouring (well I recommend you try out traditional medium first before colouring digitally though it is not necessary to follow what I suggest) :)

I did actually make an attempt of colouring this same picture in Photoshop, but it didn't end well...

Mainly because i started to use Filters on it, to make no traces of actual Pencil markings... Pretty much every little detail got blurred and pretty much, ugly... And afterwards colouring it, made it look messy because of the missing (-blurred ugly) detail
I should have coloured it as it was, and never had used Filters at all... It's a beginner thing, i'm not used to Photoshop's features, only the brush tool :D :(

Erh, thanks for the comment btw, i have a great bunch of these kinds of pictures, perhaps we could share more with each others interests over MSN, if you like..?
PM me if you'd like to add me on MSN :)

Both of these are from some 25 years ago. I could do the various media pretty well, but my tendencies were towards the mechanical, not as much artistic, so I didn't really have much interest towards persuing it.

Well you all know him really well. :p It's an old speed painting work of mine where I retouch it just now and added a quick and simple background. The rough sketch was done in Painter before bringing it into Photoshop for details.

The goal of both work is for conceptual visualizations where fast and semi finish rendering is a must though sometimes I will polish up some work that I enjoy a lot until it looks professionally done. :)

Are you looking to do concept art in game industry? Also have you seen Feng Zhu's work?

huey_yeng
07-13-2007, 11:43 AM
@Phait:

Yup that's one of my aim besides being a comic artist (or manga-ka since I'm really into manga).

I saw Feng Zhu's work over at CGSociety. He's more of a traditional artist with simple use of Photoshop for colouring concept. If not mistaken he did mention of working for Duke Nukem Forever though I'm not sure of that status at the moment.

My colour pencil assignments which span around 4 days on and off. Roughly took me around 8-9 hours in total.

A portrait of Nico Rosberg. Sorry for the uber cheap picture quality due to the paper size which is A3 size. I'm lazy to scan in two parts and merge them in Photoshop. :p

Did these a few years ago -- sketches on paper then colours in CorelDRAW. Dunno if my skill still reaches this high. Needless to say, they're all G1 Transformers :dopefish:
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/6761/tracks150dpicolourbf2.th.jpg (http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tracks150dpicolourbf2.jpg)http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/965/shockwavezi4.th.jpg (http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shockwavezi4.jpg)http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/3747/optimusprimehv8.th.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=optimusprimehv8.jpg)
The Tracks one was just a straight fill-in of the sketch lines, while the Shockwave one involved turning the sketch into 2D shapes and filling them individually (and removing all the extraneous nodes that kept creeping in). The Optimus Prime one is, of course, just a pencil sketch ;)

You know, i am sort of working at Duke4.net, where i among things, also post fan-submissions... that being, mostly fanarts...

People don't submit stuff often though, most stuff is actually sketches done by me, as "fillers", because we need sufficient amounts of submissions before i can post it on the front page

If you happen to make any Duke related stuff, send it to me, and i'll include it on our next batch of Fanart for the front page :)

Erh, i am busy, i can't post stuff just now :o

[edit:]
I wasn't busy afterall :o

Micki!
07-16-2007, 04:59 AM
Makes sense, i DID put more effort into it :D or, sort of... It's easyer to do certain things in Photoshop
Pretty much everything i make on paper is sketch-work, or cartoon stuff...
I rarely bother taking a piece of paper and telling myself to pull myself together and get going with a masterpiece..!

Photoshop is easy to add detail into though, so that's why i make alot of it (detail that is)... If it was as easy to edit a picture like that on Paper with a pencil and eraser, i'd draw MUCH more such things, with pencil :o

Just finished this skin for the Porsche GT3 RSR, in GTR 2, inspired by the P-51 Mustang warbird.

The only thing I didn't make was the base template (has all the body creases, dirt, fine details, small parts, shading) - just the metallic body, putting in the Army Airforce logo, checkered pattern, fake exhausts, etc.

Well I asked a friend to photoshop in some color and add some cool looking effects to it. This is what he came up with.

http://www.violencemedia.com/images/toybox.jpg

I'm also working on a tattoo design for a buddy, I've got a rough sketch done... now to redraw and finish it up. I've thought of actually going up to the tattoo shop and seeing if they would be interested in what I draw instead of waiting for friends to want designs.

DavoX

Speaking of tattoos...how much should one charge for one tattoo, and by what terms? Size, colours, difficulty, etc?

Damien_Azreal
08-05-2007, 10:17 PM
I usually charge 50 to 100... depending on size, how long it takes to draw, the amount of detail... stuff like that.

Of course you can always charge more if you want, but I think for what I draw it's a good price.

EDIT: Just finished the design a few minutes ago. He gave me the basic idea for the design... I did what i do.

Damien_Azreal

I did use ink.

I only draw in ink, I just didn't press down very hard... plus I really REALLY held back on detailing. And didn't push down as hard as I usually do.

I may redraw it, making personal changes for myself... adding in more detail and giving it more of my own personal style.

Doing some art for a friend's tabletop RPG that he plans to publish. The work in progress is much larger, but I've been working pretty intently on the head for the last couple days and wanted to experiment with the lighting, so I made myself a wallpaper.

Usurper thats pretty good, interested to see more.

I did this character with a graphic novel story and concept in mind. I am not a real skilled drawer, I don't know anatomy or concept of shading lighting.

My biggest issue is: I have absolutely no patience. Once I make a mistake, **** it - I give up. This is why I've been doing graphic design for so long - it's so much more focused, precise - and I enjoy taking my time. It just works better for me.

So I doubt this will ever see life beyond the drawing - although possibly a game mod, I think the story would make a fun game. He is a thief and it's how he makes his living.

The shading is good so far but it doesn't feel right.

The lips are far too narrow....
A general rule of thumb is that the left and right corners of the mouth end below the pupils of the eyes in neutral position.
See this little sketch here.

And add highlights to the eyes, they will look much more realistic that way and it will give them the "wet" look.

Phait
08-18-2007, 01:59 AM
Yeah the photo I was going from only had those 2 typical highlights. I was trying to be pretty faithful.

I don't intend to practice though, I have very little patience for drawing, I gave it up after high school mostly. I just felt like drawing her.

Did another one, took much longer:

I've had an idea since a few days ago for an original/custom rally car. I want to take a look at a few compact/midsize sedan cars and get an idea of general proportions. Then draw a real basic car profile, and the front/back on paper. From there, finetune all the curvature, etc. From there, finalise it and scan, and render in Illustrator. I'd like to do a quarter-angle shot but that'd be kinda hard to approximate.

Micki!
08-27-2007, 12:42 PM
So, it's gonna be either front, back or sideways..?

I'd prefer a 1/3 view of a car...

Micki!
08-27-2007, 01:24 PM
Yeah but that'd be kinda hard. Although much more interesting.

Yeah, i'm just saying, sure you can draw it more simple, but then you might not be NEARLY as happy with it, than if you had attempted an angled view of the car... Even if some proportions might end up looking a bit off, i think the illusion of "a cooler view" makes it up for it...

It's a hard choice for a perfectionist, especially if it's an impatient perfectionist...:o

^ The rendering on that is pretty nice, but I'm guessing the eyes should be bigger - also you can't see the shape of the eye (upper eyelind), so they feel flat compared to the rest of the rendering.

Another thing I noticed was the top of the head seems flat. I think it's only because the right side of her face (i.e. on the left of the picture), her forehead is a bit concave - which doesn't look aligned right with the direction/flow of her hair parting. It may not be real obvious but you kinda have to look for it.

Ho'kay, slight dilemma:

I want to design my own rally car as I mentioned above. Original idea is to draw it on paper, then scan it and sharpen it up in Illustrator.

Althooooooooough, it would look so much more interesting and cool as a 3D model. But I've tried modeling before, and I can't get the hang of it too well. Not only that, it would take much more time to finish. I attempted a .357 Magnum in a Quake modeling app which was fairly straightforward it seemed (then I extruded it)... but then I tried GMax some long time ago and couldn't chamfer even a a cube :o

Mr.Fibbles

Blender.
But there is that learning curve; there are also a lot of tutorials (this one being the best for starters (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro)).

Also, if you have a picture of what you are modeling, it is eas(ier) to model it.

Phait

I hated Blender, it's interface is so WEIRD, don't know why they can't stick with a tried and true interface and work flow.

Yeah, I used a picture with the .357 - I think it was called orthographic projection or something.

Mr.Fibbles
09-02-2007, 01:32 PM
you can change the interface in Blender.
I set my own interface up the way I like it and others use other interfaces.

Please don't start this discussion. It has several reasons but the most obvious is - it just wasn't designed that way from the beginning and now it's pretty much too late to change it without having to rewrite about anything of Blender.
The workflow works very good the way it is, though. And while it certainly is different - the polygon modeler is very powerful. Also you will most probably never find a better 3D Program for free. Not it the near future, though. :)

I gave art school a chance, was there 2 weeks, but didn't like the place... :(
They just do stuff there in ways that do not interest me at all...

So i'd rather learn myself to make up some homemade style... At least then i can call it original, even if it's not looking like every single other identical pic of some butt naked mans back, or a broken vase wioth cloth on it (COME ON, SERIOUSLY... if i wanna learn this, show me HOW to do, not let me sit there and say "Go, make it" and expect me to improve after a few years... Geez)

It reminded me of a hand i drew the last day i was at Art School... i was in a hurry (very short day for me that day) but it got, uhh, finished... i guess...

Yeah :D

That pose for the fingers and such looks alot more interesting though, it's just giving some horrible cramps (sp..?) when doing it too long...

Didn't take so long to make it anyways, but long enough for my hand to hurt...

I made this pic of Duke some time ago, on one of those little phonenote papers... It turned out sort of wierd, but whatever, it's just anotehr sketch... (i shouldn't press so hard when sketching though, it makes it look ugly, and hard to edit)

I know there are toons of critics in here, so let me state the obvious beforehand

Neck looks wierd, Belt on his right shoulder is too centered, and should be moved closer to his right, Sunglasses should be placed longer down, He's not actually blond-looking, ear looks wierd, strange angle, as if it's bend longer backwards, the gun doesn't look right (although, makes sense, i don't know how to draw a desert eagle out of my head, i usually look at a pic and add what looks right... in this case, alot is looking 'off' because i had nothing to look at...)

There, what else did i miss..? (seriosuly) :o
I should do less sketches and more drawings btw, too bad i rarely feel like it :D
