It's ok, could be a lot better.

What bothers me is that you've lost too much detail in the blacks, the trees on the left and right are the worst in that respect. The lack of detail is distracting, you really should just crop it out. It's also too dark.

my opinion

If you would have had a tripod you could have metered multiple shots and then merged them together to get a proper exposure.

I played around in photoshop, mainly just having fun with your picture.

The first one is a fairly straight forward edit, while the last two were me having fun in the filter gallery.

Yes, but the color was pretty washed out, since I was just taking snapshots of us being idiots. I had previously been taking pictures of our Jiffy-Pop. :p The Jiffy-Pop looked cool! Especially because I burned it!

To me, to do any of that would destroy the true beauty of the picture, is a far too technical evaluation, and misses the point of the composition. Basky has the artistically correct exposure. The name of the image is "Oasis", and it's about hope and redemption. Or, if you're religious, it might be named "Salvation" or even "Rapture".

Regardless, what makes it aesthetically pleasing, and powerful, are the strengths of it's blacks. It would ruin it if you could see all the details of the forest. As it is, in a glance you can see it's a darkened forest, and that's all it needs to convey. The photo needs it's darkness, because it's about coming out of a dark place into the light. We've all been to that dark place before, and if we're lucky we've found the light portrayed in the image. Cliché perhaps, but a definite metaphor for a life experience we've all been through. That's what makes it powerful and meaningful.

Perfect as originally presented IMO. :)

I respectfully disagree. The first thing my eyes are drawn to are the huge black vertical areas on either side of the picture.
There is a difference between seeing "some" detail and "no" detail. I never said anything about seeing "every detail." The image is under exposed too far.

Black and and white can save what would be a crappy color photo.

Here the one black/white is "dark," what are they standing around? is the other guy running, if so why?

I respectfully disagree.

Ditto. :) A matter of preference. I find my eye immediately drawn to the tree right of center and the surrounding light. I find the darkness of the surrounding trees frames the focal point very well.

To me the only thing limiting that photo was the fact the camera just wasn't good enough to do any better in that situation. Had she had an expensive Nikon or Canon DSLR you could have put it in National Geographic, everything about it is great. There are just limits to the camera, that's as good as you can do.

Since I'm an Adobe Lightroom junkie here's my version, it's probably too light because I keep my monitor dim.

It was a Canon dSLR.

I purposely made it darker because I happen to think it looks better that way. The original photo was much brighter. If you don't like it, that's cool. Don't knock my equipment, though.

Notice Nessus said, expensive dslr, and his comment was in relation to National Geographic, one of the most demanding magazines in relation to photo work... the magazine that just about every photo-journalism major dreams about working for. If you have a 'rebel' it is a cheap dslr.

When you talk about dslr's you also have to mention the lens you have. The kit lens that comes with cheap dslr's like the 'rebel' is absolutely horrible, I think its worse than most of the lenses that come on p/s canon cameras.

My mistake, it looked like a point shoot shot and you had said the colors didn't show well which I didn't think would happen on a high end camera. I even tried to read the exif data so I wouldn't look foolish ( too late) but there was none. I love the shot, wasn't trying to get on your case.

It's no problem. :) I think the exif data got stripped because it's a Flickr resize.

The colors were originally washed out because I hadn't changed the white balance settings from the last snapshot I'd taken. It was sort of a freak occurrence, because the smoke from our campfire is what made the sunlight rays show up. I'm a big fan of super dark black and white photography, either way---I can't wrap my head around people who just grayscale a photo and leave it at that. :p

That was true a couple years ago for sure. I think the newer Canon SLRs come with a halfway decent lens now. When you're paying $1K for your camera and you see lenses beside it that are selling for $700 or more, you have to assume that the kit lens isn't that fantastic.

I ended up spending another $700 to get two decent lenses for my Canon, and stuffed the kit lens in the closet to gather dust. The difference in the quality of the pics was immediately HUGE. Would love to be able to afford a really high end telephoto, but still need to eat. :)

Inanimate Carbon Rod

heh, I have one lens that is $700 and it's on the low end of canon lenses.

Although, I don't use it anymore because of my total switch to digital after buying the G9, my main lens is the Canon 70-200 f4L. I also have a 50mm f2.

You should take this shot at a lower angle below the statue kind of and adjust your f-stop or whatever that one thing is (I don't even know but I know what to do on my Canon). Could get a better picture, cause that statue would be nice subject matter.

And that was shot digitally and composited in PS, I just have an A630, no DSLR.

Yeah I saw the G10. One thing that's really nice is it goes down to 28 millimeter and as much as I love my zoom that would be really useful to have. I dont know what they were thinking going to more than 14 megapixel. As it is the camera starts to get noisy at 400 ISO, 800 is basically unusable if you want a clean looking shot so packing even more pixels on there has got to make that worse.

I've got a cover done for a free ambient album I'll be working on/off soon. I just can't decide the color variations.

I used a photo of me walking on a road in Photoshop and cut out my silhouette, made it light grey, printed it out. Then I cut the silhouette out of the paper, and bent it upward. What you don't see is the cut hole, I photoshopped it out, and padded out the corners with clone tool as my photo of this and the angle wasn't completely filled with paper. The crease there is a printer accident, but I decided to keep it in there. Seems like it's a path for the silhouette to walk along.

What do you have right now?

Right now I have a Canon Elan7n [i]film[i/] slr and a Canon G9.

When I shoot with my slr I use slides and it is just so expensive and a hassle to use. So much so that I don't use my SLR anymore.

I have been thinking though that the xsi doesn't have all the features I want.
I just really want to use my lenses again (70-200 F4L & 50 1.8)...

yossa
01-26-2009, 03:31 AM
If I was in your position I'd buy a used RebelXT unless you look for features only found in 20/30/40D

The XT is the only body from the Canon budget line that's worth something in my opinion (lowest noise levels) and the only minus to it is the lack of sensor cleaning.

Inanimate Carbon Rod
01-26-2009, 06:56 PM
Well as far as manual function similarity I think my Elan 7n is somewhere between a 40/50d and 5d.

The 50d has received some pretty horrible reviews, many of which state that the 40d is the better camera. The 5d is out of my price range.

yossa
01-27-2009, 12:57 AM
I don't know... If you want to shoot manually the only (albeit huge) thing the higher end DSLRs have going for them that's actually better in that aspect is bigger viewfinder (If I'm missing something here, do tell). Having said that, I have no problem with focus in my own photos (using Rebel XT), provided the lens I'm using has a large enough focus ring turn degree.

Inanimate Carbon Rod
01-27-2009, 02:07 AM
Well XSI and XT lack a wheel to quickly and easily adjust exposure and f-stop.

XSI on top 40d on the bottom.
http://www.radiantlite.com/uploaded_images/40DandXsI-back-790562.jpg

I havent really made up my mind... but I'd hate to go down in megapixels from my g9.

yossa
01-27-2009, 02:55 AM
Ah, the venerated back wheel. Honestly, all I have to do to change exposure/aperture on my camera is either turn the front wheel or turn it while holding an ergonomically placed button. I wouldn't say the lack of back wheel is a big issue to me.
As for megapixels that's up to your perception of the quality of images coming out of the camera. Sometimes less is more and in terms of noise that's definitely true in a DSLR. I have to say though that the Digital Photo Professional coming with Canon cameras is exceptionally good at removing noise from RAW files, superior to anything I've tried.

After reading some at the dpreview forums I think I will go with the 50d kit with the 17-85mm lens. I wont be buying for about another month or so... I still have plenty of time to think it over.

Well, I am getting a fairly large tax refund. So right now I am leaning back towards the 50d.

I had a chance to play with both cameras today. I liked the heft of the 50d better, it seemed easier for me to keep still. The xsi did not seem too small to handle. The speed of shooting on the 50d was just crazy, it sounded mighty impressive.

"Whatever" as in you don't see the problem in processing your photos far beyond believable highlight levels, or "whatever" as in you just don't care? Either way I hope the school you're going to is going to make you look different at this stuff.

The brightest part of your "Badassatized leather" portrait up there, which naturally should be the light above your head, has lightness value of 165 - well into midtones.

I'll weigh in.

Oakman
Pic 1 - It is the best of the bunch. However, there is way to much light is on the license plate. My eyes are drawn to it more than the other objects in the picture, it is heavily distracting. If the image were cropped higher it would have been much better.

Pic 2- Near blown highlights, but my concern about this image is that there is nothing that makes it the slightest bit interesting. Its crooked, but why?

Pic 3- The tree and wall should not be in the shot to that extreme. Take them out and covert the picture to serpia or b/w and the picture might be decent.

Pic 4- I don't really get the point of your self portrait. You need a much smaller depth of field. The pic looks very dull.

/my spam time

I got more today! I did in fact see deer, and took some pics but the woods/branches obscure sooooo much you cannot find them. At least, I challenge you to :p I went 5 miles north along railroad tracks and saw:

deer, crane, groundhog, red-tailed hawks, heard an eagle

Just what is this thing?

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/1619/89885183.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/1619/89885183.jpg)

It was far ahead, and when I looked through my monocular, I saw heat haze. It clearly looked like a barn, what with the angle of the 'roof', and in the shot you can barely tell where there would be darker roof atop. But, I also didn't nkow if it was a train car and a guy in the 'doorway' there. I didn't wanna go too far ahead and get in trouble, so I snapped this pic. Sucks, cause I didn't even get to my intended destination (rock quarry). If it's a barn, why would it be "on" the tracks, they go straight out for miles. Could be some kind of arched tunnel? I have checked the satellite maps and birds-eye-view of the area and can't find anything, but I'll look harder again.

*EDIT*
Turns out that barn indeed is... a barn. The tracks curve giving the illusion its 'on' the tracks from 1 to 1.5 miles away. I coulda kept going! But, one thing confusing, the barn door on the satellite image is smaller compared to what I can tell in the actual photo.

32, I didn't even know you could get over 8. What did that run you? How is your camera on taking video, does it go above 640x480? I shot some concert footage with my G9 and it came out pretty damn good, sound wasn't even that bad.

I know I'm always pimping this program like a broken record but it really is the easiest and fastest way I've seen to punch up your photos. I was surprised how much detail came back on this one, that's a nice camera, what is it?

I took this spider by the light of my LED flashlight that's why he's blue.

My G9 is now dead, it wont turn on, it just gets hot. The interwebs say internally screws come loose and short out one of the boards and it seems that's what happened. I think it's burned out and removing the screw wont help but I'll probably try. I don't know if I want to spend like 200 or more fixing it or get a G11 or something comparable.

Here's a pictorial thread describing what happens to these cameras. http://www.myfixtips.com/blog/digital-camera/who-killed-my-g9-133.htm

Nessus

Can you force that camera to shoot with a faster shutter speed but make the picture darker? Because there was a lot of information in the dark area of the spider so your camera has a lot of room to process the image later and try to recover some detail out of it. I'd rather have a shot dark then blurred.

This shot was totally dark but I saved it to some extent.

I can play with many certain things on it, light adjustements is one thing, if that's what you mean...
It's capable of many things, but i only use like half of it, like special filters for certain settings around you etc... I thnik it even has a night-mode... But it basically only sharpens anything bright, and does almost nothing to the dark surroundings... I guess some afterwork like the stuff you did there is needed for a pic like that to look any good...

Do you have a version of that pic you posted there before it was edited..? I'm just curious how drastically it has changed...

Thanks for the tip Nessus.

Now that I have my 50d, I rarely use my G9. I use the G9 when I go out with friends either to a bar / party and in all honesty I don't need a G9 for that type of photography.

Depending on your funding situation, it may be a good time to make the jump to an SLR. The T1i is basically the same as my camera, but with video. Now that the awesome 7d is announced a lot of people with 40/50d's are jumping ship and selling their cameras. I would be too, but I'm trying to buy a road bike right now and I can only do one or the other. Here is a cool vid shot with the 7d. http://www.vimeo.com/6475938

I've thought about a DSLR but I just don't think it's for me. Besides I'd want one so nice that I can't afford it. I take my camera with me to work, I go all over the city and I just wouldn't take a big camera with me. I need something borderline pocketable. Have you seen what they are calling the micro 4/3rds standard? The concept is more of a small SLR than a full feature point and shoot. They have lens systems and everything, I'm going to keep my eye on that. Right now I'll probably fix the G9 if it's not too expensive and then see what the options are next year for a replacement. There's so much great stuff coming out.

How's the video on that 50D in low light?

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/3853/img373513.th.jpg (http://img28.imageshack.us/i/img373513.jpg/)

(Edit) Thats a great video. 25 years ago it would have cost 100,000+ to get that kind of quality on the street at night, and even still it might not have looked that good.

Inanimate Carbon Rod
09-20-2009, 11:09 PM
The 50d doesn't have video.

I'm kind of skeptical on the 4/3 system, 1.6crop cameras are barely good enough as it is. I wouldn't want a smaller sensor.
The t1i with a kit lens can be had for $900 and it is smaller than my 50d, but with the exact same sensor.

Nessus
09-21-2009, 06:19 PM
You make some good points but for me at this time I want to stick with the whole high quality in a small factor concept. Micro4/3rds is only weak in comparison to full DSLR's. all things considered they seem pretty cool for what they are. Olympus or Pentax has one that looks pretty nice. It's all still new, I'm going to wait out a dev cycle and see what happens. I'd love to get a low light RAW file from that 50D to play with and get a feel for the limitations if you could get me one.

What kind of low light shot do you want?

Well exposed low light? High iso low light? Poorly exposed low light?

The G9 is useless at high iso values.

Nessus
09-22-2009, 03:37 PM
Poorly exposed low light. Maybe something over exposed too, to see how well it can recover. The G9 has big issues with highlight blowouts. And yeah it sucks at high ISO. 400 is grainy and anything over that is worthless. The G11 has a 12800 ISO mode where it doubles up the pixels and takes a 2.5 megapixel shot. Thats a great idea but they should have made it available at all ISO.

Thanks, it's fun to play with those. You have good headroom with that camera, makes taking the pictures so much easier. ISO must work different on the DSLR's. ISO 6400 is still better than 800 on the G9. I would think you can take indoor shots like at a restaurant without using the flash. I hate using the flash because it annoys everyone.

ISO works the same it's just that on a DSLR you get a much larger sensor and the pixels are not so cramped so they get much more light out of the scene, reducing noise and other artifacts. It's all even better on full frame cameras and don't get me started on the ridiculous quality of medium format.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on that actually
Ridiculous quality with a price tag to match. The sensor size makes it possible to produce large images with very low pixel density, providing the best image quality. The companies make no compromises when it comes to dynamic range.
But the cameras are priced in the absolute pro sector, are unwieldy, slow and useful only for some applications, telephoto not being one of them for example.
Bear in mind I've only seen the photos and had never even touched any of the Hasselblads, Mamiyas or PhaseOnes.

Oh, and they only have superb lenses since the price is already so high that nobody makes anything budget for those beasts.

Nessus
09-25-2009, 09:01 PM
I had those same thought's about the smaller format cams. Great dynamic range on them, you can really save a shot but not much zoom and kind of pricey. I'm betting in a year or two there will be better offerings, the whole format is new and there are too many pro's and semi pro's who want to scale down the size but keep the quality high.

Have you seen the new sample shots for the G11? The noise control is lightyears better than the previous ones. There are usable shots at 1600 and 3200 ISO. Both of them look better than 800 ISO on my G9. Check out this gallery it just hit the web. http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canong11_preview2/

Yeah I've seen this gallery. There's a lot to choose from if one wants a smaller camera and still wants acceptable image quality and high ISO performance. The one thing DSLRs do much better is speed of use I think. Manual zoom, focus when needed, stuff like that.

Hey Jokke_r those are interesting, where do you live?

ICR were those lens filters of exposures on those waterfalls?

Here's my new watch, I really love this one, it's a real attention grabber.

If you want a nice watch but can't afford the Swiss and German stuff take a look at a new American company Lum-Tec They range 500-1000, more on the low side though.

Well to have the milky waterfall effect you need a longer shutter.

To do have a long shutter, during day time, requires a really high f-stop... around f22.

I didn't even know camera F stops went that high.

Anyways the watch company I got that watch from, Lum-tec, from is having a killer sale, that watch is right now $475, I'd have paid $1200 I like it so much. They are having a massive sale on most of thier stuff, some under $400.

Professional quality photos can mean a lot of things but given optimal conditions the a350 would give good results but it's in a totally different class to professional cameras. Remember you're stuck with Sony alpha glass which would certainly be an issue for me but if you're just wanting to play around and don't feel the need to expand beyond kit lenses then don't worry about it.

I'm sure you cab get pro reults from that camera, I've gotten salable, publishable shots outof my G9 point and shoot.

When you buy a DSLR you are not just buying a camera you are buying into a whole system of lenses and accessories that photographers add to throughout their life. IMO you do not want to buy into the Sony system. Cannon and Nikon have pretty much got it all perfected and offer a huge selection of great peripherals. I would stay with one of those. Me personally I would go with a Cannon but Nikon is great too.

I lost my G9 this summer. I was heartbroken but in the almost 2 years I had it I took 5700+ pictures and a few hundred videos so yeah it could have sat on a shelf most of the time and I'd probably still have it but I took a lifetimes worth a pictures with it. I'm the type of guy that believes you should use the good china instead of just displaying it in a cabinet, even though you might break some.

Awesome tool is being given away today only

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/inpaint-2-4/

This does not replace the clone tool - it is a very special too that features an algorithm that fills in areas of a removed area. I noticed another user indicated GIMP had an add-on called resynthesizer, or something - I have no idea what that is, and I'm not an expert at GIMP... I've had several classes in Photoshop specifically, and I can do some pretty advanced work.

I've become experienced with the tool, and before you raise an eyebrow about a gimmicky clone tool, please hear me out...

InPaint uses a very specialized technique of recreating the texture-like features of the surrounding areas without the rubberstamp effect. It is suitable for removing not only objects in the picture, but damages and blemishes.

Often you may use additional passes for improved results, and in combination with the clone and other tools, the results can sometimes be a photo in which the changes are unidentifiable no matter how much of a pro you are at detecting “shopped” photos. For the novice, you’ll be amazed at how you can fill in a patch of grass or other feature and the blend is seemless.

I went to a Furthur festival last week - you don't get much more "Hippy" than that. I met a photographer (Mark Lewno) with this massive camera, and he was talking about all kinds of technical things about it - like it's full 35mm sensor. It had a raw image of like 24,000 or 26,000 pixels or something and a crazy long lens he was using for the fireworks we could see over the city from the venue.

anyway here is his website - lot's of musician pics, and it turns out he knows a lot of the people he's been taking pictures of over the years.

That "inpaint" feature is available in the latest Photoshop CS5, although it's called "content aware" there. Been using it a lot in the past 2 months.

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/33/rom134panorama1.th.jpg (http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/33/rom134panorama1.jpg)

Photoshop is truly amazing nowadays. This image for instance was originally two different images, both badly framed, one getting the top of the colloseum and the other getting the road and about half the colloseum, with literally 3 or so clicks in photoshop it merged them seamlessly and the remaining areas that got sort of skewed out like the corners i filled in with this content aware feature, then i also replaced the entire sky since it was over exposed. The selection tools are so bloody amazing nowadays, and does it almost automatically.

It would be very hard to tell you merged that from two photos... after looking for some kind of seam or rubberstam effect, I did spot the offset splice in the lamp post, but the surrounding areas all look authentic.

Especially given the hexagons created by his lens.

It's a problem inherent with most lower quality lenses... one of my three lenses would have done the same thing. The downside in the nature setting is that it makes the scene decidedly unnatural.

Jokke_r

It's not so much the lens as the result from light diffraction on a very small aperture, it's a problem inherent in all lenses at very small apertures and very high intensity light.
That said it's an entirely different phenomenon from lens flare. Also Parkar, i'm not entirely sure if thats a compliment or not. Considering my goal was for realistic exposure imitation I'll say the latter.

Yea, guess it depends on what you tried to achieve. I like it though, would put it into the desktop rotation if it was highres enough.

I think for me it's mostly the way the light interacts with the stone and the grass looking like it might be done using alpha planes that give it that "game-look".
