Unfortunately they resized 1600 wide images to 1024 wide - if you click the image after the thumbnail, you'll get that fuller size.

I took them around town and found a nice long couple of river trails during my jog today. Here's some samples hosted @ Imageshack because Photobucket doesnt provide linkable thumbnails :tinyted: so there's a bunch more @ PB link.

Is that a film camera? I was wondering what the difference is in picture quality between good film and digital cameras, from the point of view of someone who actually know what they're talking about (i.e. not me :p). For example, can one of them have everything in focus while the other can only focus on one distance from the lens?

Phait
07-21-2007, 06:46 AM
Film will give you grain since it's... film and has imperfections (well, there's an important element in the makeup of film that gives way to grain, I can't recall), whereas digital will give you noise - this is especially evident in higher ISO shots (the higher ISO setting you use, the more light is let into the lense, which helps when taking shots in dim/dark areas usually without flash). So it's bit of a tradeoff.

I would prefer film grain to digital noise, it's a kind of "character" to photography - but for me digital is much more convenient (what with previewing/deleting/etc). Of course you can fake a lotta filmic stuff in Photoshop but it's just not the same as something shot with a good lense/focus.

Inanimate Carbon Rod
07-21-2007, 08:41 AM
Well as far as film goes, you have negatives and slides. With slides being the much higher quality object to scan. For instance http://claytonman.com/images/texastech/hand1lg.jpg is a higher resolution than most digital cameras are capable of producing.

My last picture was a negative.

Nooo. Have a junk folder. I use to delete a lot of my photos. Then there'd come a time when I wanted something specific I thought I had, only to realize I was stupid and got rid of it.

Keeping your old art can be very helpful if you ever want to look at it again or see where you came from :D

Three photos I took with my fathers camera near our family's summer house in June during a short walk up to a nearby mountain. It's to bad you can't turn the date stamps off(Only thing I don't like about that camera), used photo shop to get rid of them on two of the images. The sunset image is as close to midnight sun as we get there, it's just about to go down for an hour or two.

I am really itching to get my own camera (I don't even have a web cam or phone camera) but got no income right now so it will have to wait a few months.

What kind of camera are you looking for? I've got an 8 MP Canon A630
http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/powershot_a630/

I'm pretty happy with it, except it does not have image stabilisation, which means I have to give up on most shots without flash. That's the only thing I regret buying it for, I thought it had IS.

Although notice the light brown spots on my eye... this kinda worries me according to:
http://cnri.edu/iridology_faq/iris_color_&_iris_pigmentation.htm
Pigment Spots are dark brown spots appearing at random throughout the iris. These indicate liver and pancreas malfunction. High or low blood sugar conditions should be suspected.

I just ate a PB&J sandwich, I wonder if that's it? (blood sugar):p

This last one is not my photo, but you can see the eye detail much better. It's gross but amazing:

What's a good camera you guys can recommend me? I would like to have the ability to manipulate the shutter speed (so I can do that nifty light blur thingy haha) but aside from that I just want quality and the ability to do macro shots.

I'm only going to be doing this as a hobby so I don't really want a too expensive camera nor do I want to have to do things manually.

Phait
10-29-2007, 02:28 PM
I'm very happy with my 8MP Canon A630 despite it not having image stabilisation. It's still a point and shoot, got it for about $200 but should be cheaper now. It has full manual mode with shutter speed and all that which is quite useful now that I've started using it. I would take a look at the higher end A line but with Image Stablisation, but Inanimate Carbon Rod may have better recommendations.

Inanimate Carbon Rod

Tell me how much you are willing to spend and I will tell you the best camera.

ADM
10-29-2007, 07:53 PM
Probably anything under $600 USD. Though if I can get something cheaper but still good I'm more than willing to go for it.

Also is there a massive difference from 8mp -> 10mp? I'm looking at the Canon Powershot A720, which is 8mp and has manual capabilities and image stabilisation.

Phait
10-29-2007, 08:12 PM
If you like to make wallpapers in general or for yourself I'd go with minimum 8 MP. Since I use 2 monitors, my wallpapers are 2880 px wide... 8 MP is 3264 px wide... you know as well as I do, the more you scale down, details look better because they're smaller, but sharper. But for me, 3264 isnt a big difference over 2880 and the end result is my wallpapers aren't as sharp as I wish them to be. I hope this makes sense. I could provide examples...

ADM
10-29-2007, 08:43 PM
Ahh ok yeah that's not really something I'd be using it for. I'd probably end up scaling down a majority of the snaps to use on the web so 3264px wide would probably be more than enough.

I just don't want it to be really noisy or bad quality but like you said the more you scale down the better the quality would get.

I ended up buying the Canon Powershot A720IS.. it was perfectly within my budget range (it came to $375AUD -- I got it a touch cheaper.. was $399) and it has all the features I wanted (macro, manual mode, shutter speed changing, image stabilisation etc).

The G9 was there but it was about $800AUD. A bit too expensive.

I've got one exam left this Thursday then 4 months off, I'll definitely be taking lots of pics in the next couple of months now :)

Zenit 2/58mm M42 mount manual lens + about 10cm worth of macro rings attached through a M42 - EF adapter. No magnifier.

Well I used canon's zoom browser to make that tif. Which was before I got a hold of lightroom or cs3 to be able to open it. I just redid the image in lightroom and it came out to 34 megs as well.

As a sidenote, I would just like to point out just how awesome Lightroom is. It makes touching up photographs so much easier and it makes it very easy to touch up multiple photo's consistantly.

Glad to hear that, I have a whole series of pictures I adjusted on a fualty monitor that was too red and now they are all cold, I need to able to fix the whole batch globally.

Lightroom has some neat stuff in it like that exposure setting which to me is just a fancy filter that could go in photoshop. The color and lighting tweaks seem more capable than what PS has and that tool to straighten a crooked picture is so much easier than doing it in PS. I just wish they kept all the options and controls closer to what PS has, there is no need to reinvent the wheel.

Adobe Lightroom really has some high quality filtering. I saw a pic in a Digital photography magazine today of the Manhattan Bridge with the Empire State Building centered in it and thought hey I've got almost the same pic. I cropped it and was able to tweak it pretty close to what was in the magazine because the filters give you amazing control.

You grab 3 or more picture of diferent exposures, and generate the HDR pic in a HDR software like photomatix. Then you set different settings to get the effect you want.

QTPFSGUI does more realistic HDR shots:

Inanimate Carbon Rod

Well you could have easily done that with two shots... not three. You just meter for the sky and then meter again for the hillside.

It looks as if the hillside was underexposed and you upped the contrast/brightness too much to compensate.

Nessus - How is the G9 working?

Oh I hand hold mine usually. A majority of what I have posted was taken with my old SD500 ps camera. I have a Canon Elan7n with a 70-200L and 50 1.8 lenses. I shoot slides with the Elan and have a pretty powerful slide scanner (7200dpi) but its a hassle waiting for developing / seeing if the shot was metered right. I wanted something that could potentially print (what I consider) good 16x20's and a 12mp digital offered that. I just didnt have the money to spend on a digital slr with 12mp; plus I only used my slr when I went looking for photographs... so often I would see something grand, but would not have the slr with me because of its sheer size.

From a cave in NM, I crawled into. A tip, if any of you ever go spelunking never take your good camera in! Out of our group of 7 people, 3 camera's broke while in the cave... mine siezed after we left. Why? because of all the dust.

I really like the G9 although it's made me hunger for a more professional Camera like the 40D. Only thing is I would rarely carry it and you take pictures with the camera you have on you. In that respect the G9 is about as good as you can do. I have been trying to get the hang of night shooting and exposure shots. Night shots are really challenging, especially not getting one blurred out and I really don't like high ISO. I'm itching for spring and some good lighting and color. Everything is so drab here now so I'm doing mostly black and white and night shots. Should I bother putting in the cannon software? If it will make RAW files show as thumbnails in explorer that would be great, otherwise I can't imagine it will give me anything worthwhile.

This I can believe. I'm not opposed to such tricks, when they are explained next to the photo. You should match the blacks better, because the brush strokes next to the moon are pretty obvious as it is now. As for creating great starry skies, check out this tutorial:

I was going to explain it but as I started typing it out I felt like an ass over explaining something that almost no one would see as this thread moves very slow so I kept it minimum unless someone asked. That's a good tutorial, I actually tried to do it with noise first but I was getting frustrated with the result and just put in the stars one at a time with the paintbrush. Micki! I like the Dagobah swamp looking one.

Nice photos. I have to make a comment on those glasgow buildings and "Skip" photos. They are too dark in my opinion, either you wanted them too look like this or you couldn't handle shooting against bright sky or bright environment... I think the best way in this case is making photos in AEB mode and then combining those "underexposed" normalexposed" and "overexposed" using Photomatrix "create HDR image" tools...
But I guess you've just planned to make them look like this because there is some certain style in them... I like also like you "sky" pics... I have never seen such skies in the country I live... :(

Good ol' Scotty
02-23-2008, 03:22 PM
Kind of split between me liking the way it turned out with the darkness and stuff and that I don't exactly have a proper photography camera, so theres very few settings for that type of thing.

Also, I think my screen could be at totally different settings - it used to always reset to default which was too bright and eventually I just got used to it so thats possibly impairing my judgment slightly

Night photography is hard. With a Powershot A520 you are probably doing about as good as you can do. All you can really do is open up the shutter for longer exposure and then mess with the image later in software. A tripod is the best way to go but it's usually not practical.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/2963/img0247xj712gg5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I lightened it up a bit but you can see the photo gets grainy, not much you can do about that without longer exposures. You shot that shot at 1/8th of a second. I like to to take iit down to 1/4 or a third sometimes even longer but that shake becomes a real problem. Look for something to brace the camera against. Hold it steady in your hand and push your hand against a tree or other solid object. Ive gotten good results from bracing the camera. You can also put it on top of something and push down firmly on it to hold it steady. When you are hand holing the long exposure night shots pretend like your shooting a rifle. Steady your body, take a breath, let half out and hold, you must keep as steady as possible while you take the picture. Also you should get used to pressing as far down on the shutter as possible before you take it so that at the last second the action of your finger pressing the button doesn't shake the camera, you can practice that one. Hope that helped.

In all reality none of that will make a huge difference, you need a better camera for really good night results.

i havent really fiddled around with the shutter times yet, i know the camera lets me set the shutter time, but i would have to see the manual on how to, these shots were taken in auto mode with flash disabled.

i usually manage to take steady shots, but this camera is rather sensetive to movement, moreso than my other camera. so it takes some time to get used to this one and get more steady results.

all in all, i`m planning to buy a good digital mirror reflex camera in a year or so, i love taking pics so i bet its a good investment.

Nessus

You definitely should get out the manual, you can do a lot of cool things with shutter speed. Your camera will do up to 15 seconds which means you can get some real nice effects with a tripod.

I took this one when it was starting to snow at 1:30AM. Even though it's the dead of night you can see the houses clearly because I used a 1/2 second shutter speed and braced the camera against the inside of my door frame to keep it steady.

Ya, I'd never seen one before either. Went looking online for good places to take pics of birds, and for the location I went to it mentioned that sometimes you'd find a black swan or two there. Not sure how an Aussie bird gets to Canada. Someone must have brought it over. The area I took the pic is not enclosed, so it's free to come and go as it pleases. Tagged leg, so somebody is keeping track of it's coming and going. :)

Thanks. For every one good photo I choose to post I've deleted a couple dozen (I'm like the room full of monkeys and typewriters that eventually results in the complete works of William Shakespeare - keep clicking the button and eventually you'll shoot something worth keeping). Gotta love digital. ;) I'm just learning still, but having fun with it.

Tripod for the moon pic. Slight adjustments in Photoshop to sharpen it, and also used the new Shadow/Highlight adjustment feature in CS2, which just completely kicks ass. Makes little fixes so easy. I'd like to have a longer (and sharper) zoom lens, but the budget doesn't allow for the time-being. :)

As far as the others go, Ottawa has a lot of rivers and lakes around it, making for lots of opportunity for picturesque nature shots. The one that looks like a river with the bridge and buildings in the background is actually the Rideau Canal (man-made). It's over 200km long. Quite the engineering feat. We skate on a portion of it in the winter. :) Anyway, that's Canadian Parliament in the middle in the background. One of my favourite vantage points in the city.
