Whatcha driving?

If I hadn't spent all of my income last year, I'd of had half of what I needed to buy a used 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX and got a loan for the other half (which, would've required I kept my job as well). So now back at square 1.

Most people will be happy just to have a decent reliable car and while I'm the same, $12k or so for a used car that isn't too old and from a company revered for it's reliability, for me I see no reason to get anything else - and I'm sure fun to drive. My long term goal (like nearing retirement) would be to have a Porsche 911, but I can't imagine how much they'll change by then - and the older stock will probably increase in price.

My problem is I have never driven stick, I do wonder if I would regret getting an auto down the line. It's so fun in simulations, to have that feeling become real and translate with the feeling of the gears kicking in and the road... but manual isn't really required. Is there any real benefit to going manual?

Jiminator

nowadays no, however some people enjoy it. if you do get a manual, get a cheap one, so you won't feel bad about burning out the clutch when you learn to drive it.

Yes, there is. First of all you consume less gas by using manual transmission since you can do precise gear shifting according to the road conditions. Second, you have a much powerful grip on the car mechanics like accelerating, speeding etc.

here you'll find a nice list of advantages of manual over automatic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission

Phait

Interesting.

I'd still hate to **** up a transmission though. I could learn on a beater car but you might still have to adjust on a per-car basis.

That too. :) Automatic transmission in real life is not as half enjoyable as stick shift. Apples and oranges.

sawn_off
08-02-2007, 08:04 AM
It seems like it'd just be an annoying, repetitive thing to put up with after a while. My motorcycle's transmission is the sort of setup i"ve always wanted, but even that's an inconvenience sometimes. I've only driven a couple manuals and it was just plain cumbersome. And of course both times I drove a stick, my routes involved me stopping at a hill.....

Also, depending on what kind of car and/or automatic transmission you have, you can always get aftermarket shifters, allowing a faster, easier, better shift.

Llama Gibbz

Screw clutches.
Theres a load performance cars nowadays that use Semi-automatic transmissions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_transmission)

My charger and the chrysler 300's use Autostick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostick)

peoplessi

We drive mainly stickshifts here in europe, that has changed a bit in these few years as automatics have gained some market. Modern automatics, so called roboticautomatics as DSG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox are more fuel efficient than human could ever be with stickshift.

I drive Ford Mondeo, 10years old. Still working, but rust has gotten to the mesh. And as a student I can't really afford a new car, possibly when I finish my studies I will get a BMW(used).

Chrysler 300C (Hemi) is one of the nicest cars I've seen coming out lately ;)

2001 Chevy Cavalier... blue. ;)

It works, Bon drives it mostly... I hate to drive. Can't stand it... bores me to death. So she drives the better of the two cars.

Other car, 1991 Ford Probe... red.

I drive it to work, and home... only about ten minutes total each day. Other than that, it sits in the parking lot... simply sits there.

In the next year or so we're gonna get rid of the Probe and get a SUV of some kind, have not made up our minds as to what kind yet.
But we'll use the Probe as trade in, and Bon will drive the SUV and I'll simply move up my ten minute daily drive to the Cavalier.

Yeah, it's great. At first I had some problems with it, battery needed electrolyte, and it was so bad I almost had to buy a new one, but after charging it awhile and riding it out I got it back into shape. At first I was only pulling about 36mpg, but the bike is rated at 48. Now I pull 50, and I've heard more experienced riders pull more like 55.

The only drawbacks to that bike (Suzuki Intruder VS800) are it's cold blooded (takes a minute for the engine to warm up and hates to be in first gear, and even low idle sometimes, until it does) and it has a small gas tank (3.2 gallons) which means I flip to reserve and fill it up after 110 miles.

Oh, and that extra 5ccs puts the bike in a higher engine class on the insurance so I pay more.

1989 Pontiac Grand Am, which I sold because my wife had a...
1994 Ford Escort, and I needed a truck so I got a...

It's pretty cheap, i'm paying $1000 in cash for it. Also, I've test driven it and it actually runs really well, I don't think many kids have used it for racing luckily. I would've rather had lower mileage (160k miles on it) but I've driven some Toyotas with 220k and they ran great.

I went and checked out some reviews, lots of people are saying this model Celica GT is starting to get rare (to atleast find in good condition) and it's a real nice ride, as are most Toyotas. After buying it i'll probably throw a new coat of paint on it, get some newer rims and put my stereo in it. The stock rims are really ugly. Also the backseat is extremely small so I'm gonna have to start hanging out with some midgets on the norm.

Also most Toyotas i've run across ran perfectly and just wouldn't die. My dad had an early model Toyota Corolla, and no matter what he did to it, it just wouldn't die. He eventually gave it away to somebody for free.

peoplessi

Not too bad price, definately if it is good shape that is a good deal. Toyotas are good build, no wonder why Toyota Corolla has been topseller here in Finland for few decades. They salt the roads in winter here, and the weather varies so much during the year, and still Toyotas hold. Something that can't be said on my Ford, which has rust on few spots - anti-rust treatment won't do the trick before old rust is removed and replaced/patched with new metalsheets.

Just be sure it is in good shape from under the hood, since if there is some urgent problems they will cost money. How much do you have to pay for a paint job? They are costly here in Finland, well over that cars value ;) I haven't never really liked those small FIAT Punto, Nissan Micra and so on type of cars. BMW 1 -series, it is just too damn small to get comfortable position.

I've seen loads of old Toyotas and _old_ Mercedes-Benzs on the move, going over 500 000km, ofcourse there have been parts replaced but still.

Wow, that's a no-brainer for me really. If I had to choose between a new 135i or an used E46 M3 I'd take the latter. :)

If you ask me the BMW 1 series is smaller than a Golf (my first car that I bought after getting the license was a Golf II, 3 years later I got a Golf IV), and I'm only 1,85 m tall, but I feel as cramped inside those things as sardines in a can.
Anyone sitting behind me on the backseat who is not a kid or a midget will complain after at least an hour. It's not a car to take your wife and teenage kids on a 10 hour drive on vacation.

The BMW 1 really is a nice car for large cities where parking space is scarce, it's equally suited for singles or for couples and small families (1 or 2 little kids), and of course, it's BMW, it's very fun to drive, but I'd rather consider it a "Womens' BMW" (mainly because I only know women who drive these but no guys).

Fair enough. I really thought it would be bigger, since it weighs just as much as a 3-series and it was somewhat based on the E46. Pretty disappointing to hear about how small it is inside. Bleh. E46 M3 (or maybe the E92 M3... it'll be available in sedan form and I have a thing for 4 doors; depends on where I'm at in a few years ;)) it is.

Hell, maybe I'll just reinforce the frame and engine internals on the 328i I've got now and install a good blower... there's a kit I've had my eye on that's not out yet, but some of the dyno graphs and related information from the versions currently in reliability testing seem to point to figures not far from 400 horses at the wheels. Pretty hard to say no to a setup that can eat the current M3, next gen M3 and various flavors of M5. :p

The car is fugly. Even Holden Commodore looks better, and it is better. BMW 1-series isn't all bad, you can get that nifty enginesystem - when you stop engine shuts down, when you move it will start again - unnoticiable but saves fuel and nature. I am not sure what this is called, I'd had to check that out but.

So far the BMW 5 series has been the best for me to drive. Spacious and efficient, although I don't agree on the price, which puts it below in my lists.

Yes, TSX is a consumer car and above mentioned Nissan Skyline is more than a consumer car - so it was an unfair comparison. But that picture that was posted of presumably a concept - is ugly no matter what. Matter of taste differences.

2008 Imprezas have SportShift automatics - meaning, sequential shifting if you want it (its auto shift, but you can shift up/down with a flick [no clutch needed] if you want). Awesome...

oh mine is the S80 its alot bigger. Its definitley comfortable, excellent leather seats. but the car weights around 3700lbs, a 2.9L 200hp just doesnt do it justice. its ok from 60-10. but 0-60 it just doesnt wanna get off the line man. I got it in 2003 with 45K miles on it, it was my first car so its not bad for a first car actually.

It's close to how I'd want my actual WRX to look - black, with my logo ( http://www.jaderavendesign.com ) on the hood instead (didn't put it on the hood in game as there is a big intake/dip towards the front that would break the image up).

Also I'd rather the wheels be silver, but I must've missed a file to edit as they're still goldish.

Although I'd still be happy with Rally Blue color.

Props to the guy (forget your username and I'm too lazy to look) for getting a used car (a Toyota at that) in the States for $1000...given the reports I've seen, that's very impressive indeed.

Thanks. I'd prefer a M5 too, but I'm a little bit short of the $82,000 or so base price of a new one. :p :D Could probably swing an older E39 M5 if I tried, but it'd still be twice as much as what I have now with even higher mileage. The power would be amazing, though. :o

Yeah, it does cost a lot to maintain. I order all of the needed parts myself at discounted prices and do most of the work on it myself in order to keep the price down, but even at 30% off some of the parts are still pretty costly. Thankfully, I haven't really had anything go wrong in about a year of ownership/6500 miles.

Yeah the Prius is ugly, and less economical than your average diesel (even with all the petrol/electric gubbins). But from reports, it is a decent drive.

Anyway, for you Termin, I've been thinking about the BMW M6 - and I had to locate the particular Top Gear special on it (also featuring a Porsche 911 and an Aston Martin V8 Vantage) speeding around the Isle of Man :D

It's all about what's coming out of the tailpipe. That's where the Prius is tough to beat until you get to electric cars.

As for mileage vs a diesel, that depends heavily on your driving style. Also if you do driving that will require a lot of city traffic. On the freeway or government tests they can seem comparible, but once you are anywhere else it's pretty easy to get it to give much better results.

Inanimate Carbon Rod

That guy is going insanely fast for that little road. He seems to be in the habit of starting back on the gas with his heel while he is still braking, this will keep rpm's up and also take some time away from how fast his foot is back on the gas. It's hard to tell why he does that in the shifts, it might just be a personal quirk of his but it probably helps the way the clutch performs the shift if it has a little power going to it.

Just got 2 ballpark insurance quotes on 2002 WRX:

Geico: $270/mo
Allstate: $161/mo

With Allstate if I change my length of insurance to 6 months (I've never had any), the mo/rate drops to $135. 1 and 2year(s) = $86 ($96 including Accident Forgiveness + deduc. rewards).

My dad pays like $30-$40/mo I think for a Saturn :p

For a '98 Honda Accord (my 2nd car choice if I wanted to save money overall), Allstate said about $130/mo. Now I have never had insurance so that factored into the form I filled out. When I changed that to 2 years, the monthly rate dropped to $63.

Man, I wish i would've kept my very first car.

Bought it for 50 bucks. A 1965 Ford Fairlane 2 door... candy apple red... ohh it was nice looking. But it need a lot of motor and interior work.
And parts were a bitch to find, the 65 wasn't interchangeable with any other model of the Fairlane.

So after a few years of not being able to find needed parts for it (and my dad as a mechanic couldn't find them) we sold it for 200 bucks, considering added work we did to it.
Guy we sold it to got it running, but it's still far from complete. :(

After that car I bought a 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix for like 500. Dark charcoal gray... looked very nice. Sold it to help pay for college. I miss those cars.

Mazda has for many years now been the best designed and cheap to maintain car combination (along with perhaps Lexus which still is a tad ugly unless styled), so will be a while until I change to something else. I like German cars too, but overpriced car, parts, services, more breakdowns per km, etc. etc. doesn't really make me joyous.

Btw. to your earlier discussions about braking and accelerating simultaneously. It's mostly about controlling the car. When you brake, the weight of the car shifts, depending on the brake balance and all, but often they brake a little to oversteer a bit and then just control it to be just enough to slide through the corner while accelerating to get top speed when going out of it. Since the cars are 4WD/AWD it's more natural to understeer if anything, so by using the brakes they can control the handling. All WRC drivers do it all the time, but it's very individual how much.

I use it myself in Forza 2 a lot, if a car has a lot of grip it's hard to go into smooth turns without being very sudden. Braking a bit to loosen grip on the rear while still accelerating often helps. You will also notice how the weight of the car goes forward when you brake with RWD cars, making it easier to oversteer and slide with the rear tires, too much and you are off, but just enough and you glide through the corner :)

Hmm, bumped today. I've gotten a car since then.

It's a 98 Honda Accord EX. Used to be my mom's, and she works at home so it didn't get out much. Got it around Labor Day with 39,400 miles or so...it'll hit 40k when I go home next week. I keep forgetting how old it is, not just from the miles, but it doesn't look old at all. Perhaps the dashboard electronics are a bit dated, and the exterior is quite scratched up...but everything else is perfect.

It's the V6 version...200hp feels like plenty, except for that one time I was trying to go around a garbage truck on a 2-lane road! :o Gets 28mpg highway, which isn't bad, but the I4 version got 34. I wonder how much weaker it would really feel.

Ok, enough blabbering. :p This picture is not my car, however, it looks exactly the same from I what I can see.

You can buy a S60 2007 for under $30,000.

We saw this at that dealership a month ago when my parents bought a 07 used Saab 2.0T

Best passenger ride I've had was in a Volvo. Just felt like it stuck to the road better, suspension etc.

That is dirt cheap, we europeans, especially here in Finland, pay A LOT more for such vehicles.

It's a year old, and from the pictures, has 20k miles already. That alone will drop an S60 to that price.

ya but the MSRP of that car new is over 40K. its amazing how volvos lose their value. I know My s80 dropped like you would not beleive.

Inanimate Carbon Rod

That's why it pays to buy a car thats one year old, as soon as you drive a new car off the lot its lost nearly 20% of its value.

The Volvo is really nice, I set inside and played around. It's pristine.

The dealer ships.

What happened? That sounds really bad. My sister had an accident and was all freakish around cars too, she accidentally ran a red light (Stupid intersection with like 50 lights) and tboned some Mitsubishi Lancer.

She had a minor fender-bender. Freaked her out for life, apparently. She's 31 and has a PHD, but refuses to drive a car. I don't understand it either.

My old car died a few weeks ago, most likely for good. I've been looking at few possibilities, BMW 325 being one of them, Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16(Cosworth engine) would have been great - but it's too rare.

Decent car will cost me a great deal, so this isn't that easy either.

New/used? How much are you looking to spend?

peoplessi

Used :) Around 5-10k€. That would give me some options in the 90-00 range. Those early 90s BMW's are quite "cheap". Friend drives one(325), and it offers a good ride.

Of course, if I had unlimited budget, I'd most likely buy a old mans car - AMG Mercedes-Benz.

Ever consider a Saab 9-3 turbo?

That's the car I want. First gen, with leather and A/C.

My other option is a first gen Ford Focus, but most of these don't have the options I want.

Ford is not an option anymore for me, unless it's ST or Cosworth. The car that broke was an Ford, not too reliable either. I drove some 110k miles with it, 180k km.

ICR, those Saabs would be on the limit of my budget. Cars are definately more expensive here in Finland.

My mom bought a used off-lease 2007 Saab 9-3 turbo earlier this year. I'm glad it's not my car, I would speed entirely too much.

If I pass someone on the highway and if I put my foot on the gas in the same way that I do in my jeep I end up going from 65mph to 90mph before I pass the person.

I drove from Dallas, Tx to Lubbock, Tx and while the highway was deserted a Mercedes Benz passed me at a very high rate of speed. I decided to see how fast he was going. The Saab just kept accelerating, I was doing over 120mph before I knew it. I decided to slow down.

Picture of the said BMW 325:

http://www.tuonti.com/kuvat/autot/bmw_3srj_musta.jpg

Looks decent, and drives well. Tad more expensive to maintain than the Ford I had, but not by much. Have to take a look what is on offer around here. Leather interiors and A/C would be nice, but leather interiors is the main thing I am looking for.
