I've been up all night, partly due to my stomach bugging me, but also because I just can't seem to shut off my brain. Got a lot of work-related junk on my mind. Nothing specific. Just general stuff.
It's rare that I can't sleep. Anyone else here have insomnia sometimes, and how do you deal with it?

Drugs,caffiene or nicotine?
I was a insomniac for years,up to 2-4 in the morning and i leave for work at 4:30 am.:)
Once i stopped smoking and limited myself to 1 caffeine drink a day,im drowsy by 10 pm.
Stuff to try.
1.see a doctor
2.read a book
3.avoid eating or drinking after 6pm
4.warm milk (guess #3 is a oxymoron)
5.make it completely dark in bed room.
6.avoid computer use or bright screens before bed.
eye strain can make you not fall asleep.
7.exercise
You could be under a lot stress also.

what usually works for me when I have trouble getting to sleep, is to try and focus solely on the visual part of my mind. I often try to visualize flying through a series of tunnels, or just have my mind conjure up random images and after a short while I doze off.
Maybe something similar works for you...

Sometimes when I have something running through my mind in the wee hours of the night keeping me up I either write it down (or make manifest the thought, like I am thinking about emailing someone but decide to go to bed instead but can't sleep because I am thinking about emailing them; so I just email them and then go to bed) or I exhaust the thought through in my mind (solve the problem floating in there etc). Usually writing it down works better and doesn't take as long but I don't always do it and have suffered long nights of rolling around not sleeping.

My way of dealing with insomnia: er................ endure it and then go to work late the next day -- nothing else seems to work :insomnia:
It doesn't help that my insomnia basically means anyone moving about in the house can wake me up, even if I'm already dropping off. As can my (former) female housemate having two drunk male friends shouting and stomping in her room at about 1:30am, even though I was recovering from jet lag. When I asked them to be quiet because I had work tomorrow, one of the blokes said, "sorry, which day?", as though the fact that it technically was tomorrow totally invalidated my request

Ya sometimes i have nights where i will sleep like 3 hrs only then wake up and clant sleep anymore.
This is what helped me.
90 mins before going to bed dont use your computer.
relax, watch Tv(not a movie or anything, something like the news).
it turns out i was just too stimulated to sleep.
Try it, I know its hard but it may help.

Insomnia? Frequently, specially during brain-storms, and I solve it by kicking some ass...
By materializing my ideas, the ideas that don't let me sleep.

It's rare that I can't sleep. Anyone else here have insomnia sometimes, and how do you deal with it?
I have it when I'm sick or I'm over anticipating something, for instance a job interview on the next day. One of the worst nights I had in regards to the latter is that I had arranged to pick up a chick on the way to college on the next morning, and I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I imagined kissing her and how I would act, etc. Because of this I hardly got any sleep at all! The strong wind outside didn't help either. I felt very weird. I did get up and listen to some music in the middle of the night (and had a wank! :o) but they were just temporary distractions and didn't help much.
Fortuantely however, I've rarely had something as bad as that since, except when I was sick. When I'm sick, my mind goes nuts. It feels like I'm doing all these mathematical calculations in my head but I can't seem to put a finger on them. It's just all garbage that seems impossible to stop, and so I get very restless. My mind just won't relax damnit!
Despite this, I feel like I have gotten better at preventing and minimizing insomnia these days. It's hard to explain how though, as it's all inner mental type stuff. Best advice I could give at the moment I suppose is rise above your thoughts.

8. Reduce caffeine and sodium intake (duh).
9. Cool down your room before going to sleep.

Get a pad of paper and a pen... write down as much as you can. All the shit your thinking about from work, your personal life... everything.
Once you feel you've gotten as much down on paper and out of your head... try to sleep. See how that works for ya. Helps me.

Well, when it's 1AM and I know there is no way I'm going to fall asleep instead of laying in bed until daybreak and barely dozing off before work I will just get up and go on the computer or something. At least this way I'll become tired eventually whereas laying in bed using almost no energy I'll never get tired and stay jazzed up and annoyed all night long.
That's odd. I usually am messing around on the computer until 11 PM, and usually drinking Pepsi stops around 9 or so. Or whenever I've had enough which is usually about 1 L a day. Don't have sleeping problems. Sometimes I would sleep for what I would think to be 6-8 hours, but when I wake up it's 2:30. Then shortly after I'd fall asleep until my alarm clock goes off. That happens usually once a month or so. This is usually on work days because when I'm not working I don't set my alarm clock.

I'm an insomniac. I tend to be up all the time and then I sleep very little.
For instance I was up all night yesterday with friends and then woke up real early for a job interview. I had stuff to do all day and now I finally can sleep and I really am tired and once I lay down a thought pops in my head and instantly I'm awake. Probably from adreniline or some wierd unexplainable mind set.

I get insomnia a bit, the way i get rid of it is by not going to bed until 9 or 10pm the next night, then my body clock go's back to normal the next day.

I think what Destructor admitted to will keep me awake in horror tonight  :insomnia:
Not getting much sleep right now thanks to sprained wrist (no, not caused by what Destructor mentioned :p), which hurts whenever I rest it on something. Despite the fact that we went to Thorpe Park today for a right rollicking time, I don't expect sleep any time soon, partly because I had dinner at about 11:30pm :o

I have abit of this insomnia you fellows are talking about. I usually can't fall asleep until around 4-5am, even when I take sleeping pills they take hours to have any effect.

I usually don't have any issues falling a sleep but what for some odd reason seems to work for me in the rear occasion it happens is flip my orientation in the bed and sleep "upside down" so to speak. Reading until I can't keep my eyes open seems to work to as long as what I am reading is boring enough.

That happens to me sometimes, thinking about stupid things instead of sleep. I usually try to blank my mind and close my eyelids hard until they get tired.

I've suffered from severe insomnia for a few years now. Basically I would plan out 30-45 minutes of "buffer time" followed by seven-eight hours of sleep.. and would end up with about three. I'd just lay there and toss and turn for hours on end.
Basically my mind refuses to shut down, I lay there thinking about anything and everything.. about work, personal stuff, hobbies, etc. After about a year of trying everything up to and including a caffeine cutoff time, exercise, meditation and just about every over the counter remedy I had to go to a doctor.
I was prescribed Ambien for about six months to get my body back on a regular cycle, which really helped, and now I just make sure to take my anxiety medicine right before bed.

Exactly my problem. The second I close my eyes, my head starts going crazy with all of this personal stuff that's been bothering me. The only thing that helps me is music. I bought a small speaker set that I use to play my iPod on at night. I turn it down really low so I can just barely hear it, and just focus on the music until I finally fall asleep.

A little contradictory, I know. I listen to music whenever I can while I'm working, doing homework, whatever. But when I play it at a really low volume and my room is pitch black, it puts me out.

I've been having insomnia too lately..
Mostly because I have nothing to do all day.. So I don't really get tired.. Well other than the normal, day to day stuff like cleaning, drying clothes etc.
I am not getting a job yet though since I'm still dealing with my psychological problems I've mentioned before
For those who don't know or don't remember, I have social problems, I gennerally don't feel well around alot of people I don't know.. Mainly because I was bullied alot as a child.. And the bullying severly affected me.

go outside, to a pub or a disco, dance, get laid, dont sleep that day and you will be the rest of the week fine.
Dont do drugs, only pussies which cant stand so much tme without sleep takes drugs.
Also, i walk everyday about 2 hours. So i think i'm tired enought to dont be awaked. (And i enjoy a lot dreaming, I think my brain just want me to go to bed before 2 am as the most late[except for party days]).

Not really - sleep deprivation is a major problem. When you have a medical-related problem you seek help, which may or may not include drugs. Don't call people names just because they found a solution.

I've been having trouble sleeping lately -- it's a shame, as I had a good vibe going until I went to Michigan in June, and ended up with the inevitable jet lag. Mostly, I just can't seem to get comfortable at the moment, and I'm sure the summer heat hasn't helped. However, things might be getting better as the weather cools... I wonder if part of the problem is my habit of walking to work in just a T-shirt, even if it's cold in the morning -- I'm producing too much body heat, and that's why I sweat too much at night! :flame:

I was thinking in drugs as speed, cocaine, or similar. I wasnt speaking about sleeping pills.

Well, in my post i said things that have a lot of party around it, and here in spain, many people who is always in partys all the weekend and all that, uses those drugs. There are not many of them, but is usual sometimes find someone asking: "hey, dude, you want any pill?" or "hey, dude, where could i find pills?" (many of these are secret police searching for the ones of the first question)
So, i dont know how is this in other countries, i think drugs are as usual as here (well... "Spain is different"), o told him to take care in case of try what i said.

That's interesting. I've been suffering from varying degrees of social anxiety (sometimes crippling to the point of panic attacks) for the years since I graduated high school, and my childhood story is about the opposite of yours, ShadeEX. I was the popular kid, star athlete, homecoming king, all that (and I am proud that I never picked on or made fun of anyone). I also went to the same private school from age 4 through highschool graduation. These days, it is so hard for me to go out in public without at least one person I know fairly well. I just start to freak out in public or social scenes on my own. If I have someone to anchor me, I feel fine.
And I know how irrational it is; I know people aren't really looking at my every movement and criticizing me. I think all those years of growing up with the same basic people for 15 years or so left me nervous to when I don't know my standing among people I don't know. Now, there are other people who I grew up with at the same school who don't suffer from this, but it has been a truly terrible experience for me.
I used to play football, basketball, baseball, track in front of hundreds of people, and now sometimes I'm afraid to go check the mail outside because a stranger jogging by might see me.
Insomnia is my norm if I don't get just good and drunk.
An insomnia remedy, as recommended by The Who:
I used to wake up in the morning
I used to feel so bad
I got so sick of having sleepless nights
I went and told my dad
He said, "Son now here's some little something"
And stuck them on my wall
And now my nights ain't quite so lonely
In fact I, I don't feel bad at all
Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful
Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night
Pitcures of Lily solved my childhood problems
Pictures of Lily helped me feel alright
Pictures of Lily
Lily, oh Lily
Lily, oh Lily
Pictures of Lily
And then one day things weren't quite so fine
I fell in love with Lily
I asked my dad where Lily I could find
He said, "Son, now don't be silly"
"She's been dead since 1929"
Oh, how I cried that night
If only I'd been born in Lily's time
It would have been alright
Pictures of Lily made my life so wonderful
Pictures of Lily helped me sleep at night
For me and Lily are together in my dreams
And I ask you, "Hey mister, have you ever seen"
"Pictures of Lily?"
Works for me.
