This is terrible news. He was a really great writer. I loved the Wheel of Time series. May he rest in peace. :(
From Slashdot
"James Oliver Rigney Jr, author of the long-running fantasy series The Wheel of Time and better known to millions of fans by the pen name Robert Jordan, died on 16 Sept 2007 from cardiac amyloidosis. Jordan announced he had been diagnosed with the disease in March 2006 and vowed to beat the odds, but determination and gumption sometimes just aren't enough in the face of a disease with a median survival time of just over two years. Jordan was in the process of writing the twelfth and final book in the Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light, but the book was not slated for release until 2009 and is still incomplete. While there is hope that the book will still be finished from Jordan's notes, this is devastating news to all of us who have been reading the series since 1990."

Sorry for misspelling Jordan in the topic title.

No shit? Damn, Belgarath is still tied to that tree in my mind. someone should start writing some screenplays of his novels. He is so deep and his characters are awesome. he did a good job taking on conan and imo is the best we have read since Robert e Howard. Let him rest in peace.

To paraphrase something i read on another forum:

"he died as he wrote: painfully and drawn-out"

ugh. I stopped reading after the 8th book, I think I have the ninth book here, guess I will not be getting to it unless someone completes the series. how come people have to go for serial books nowadays and can't stick to trilogies? anyway I really enjoyed the first few bunch of books but then it became too much. RIP though dude.

About Rand Al'Thor, his legacy, growing powers and his struggles to overcome the Dark One.

Re: the link, the blog is overcome with traffic. Here is the announcement from the blog:

Sometimes even when you’ve fought your best….
Posted by Wilson on September 16th, 2007 in the Robert Jordan's Blog category

It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain. In the years he had fought this, he taught me much about living and about facing death. He never waivered in his faith, nor questioned our God’s timing. I could not possibly be more proud of anyone. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with him on this earth and look forward to our reunion, though as I told him this afternoon, not yet. I love you bubba.
Our beloved Harriet was at his side through the entire fight and to the end. The last words from his mouth were to tell her that he loved her.
Thank each and everyone of you for your prayers and support through this ordeal. He knew you were there. Harriet reminded him today that she was very proud of the many lives he had touched through his work. We’ve all felt the love that you’ve been sending my brother/cousin. Please keep it coming as our Harriet could use the support.
Jason will be posting funeral arrangements.
My sincerest thanks.
Peace and Light be with each of you,
Wilson

To Catalyst: Never, never loose faith. RJ did not. Harriet hasn’t. I haven’t. Going through what we have, our faith is only strengthened. Besides, if God didn’t exist, we would have never had Jim. We did. God does. Remember my Brother/Cousin, my friend, think of him fondly and glorify God’s name.
Editor’s Note:
The entire staff of Dragonmount.com would like to extend its most deepest sympathies to Robert Jordan’s family. He touched all of our lives in some way and we wish him the rest and peace he deserves. We will be posting information in the near future about where you can send condolences. Please check the News Section for these updates.

It's a real shame. The Wheel of Time series has some wonderful story telling in it. The guy could write.
My sympathies to his family.

Damn shame, I've read all of the wheel of time books and I love the series, (even though some books were a bit boring and drawn out)
I wonder whats going to happen with the last book, I know he had someone lined up to finish it, haven't read any more about that in a while.

Jordan said that he was making notes of the story in the event that he passed away so that the book could be finished to his liking. He also told his family the rest of the story before he passed away.
Its up to his wife and the publisher but I am certain it will be finished. Jordan would have wanted it to be finished no matter what. We just wont get the other two prequel books or the encyclopedia he was planning.

actually I liked elantris. The final book should be interesting. The issue being that I have to finish the ninth and then two more of his slowly plodding works....

I never read any of them but the 8th threw 11th in the series are considered the best and the only ones to make the New York Times bestseller list. Apparently he was very close to completion of the 12th book...I'm sure it will be finished and published.

Anyway, he was 65 and probably needed the rest after all the hard work...RIP

Tenth is horribly boring, elevent is very good IMO.

Edit: Whoops, had the book numbers mixed up a bit there. Ninth was okay.
