Here's an interesting discussion by a guy about a concept called "Inbox Zero". It's his theories on how you should manage your email. I happen to agree with him, my inbox rarely has mail piled up, I operate under the concept of "do something with it".
Course, my real world desk is a slophouse of stuff to do, but my inbox is in good shape. :)

For work email theres definately room for some changes. However for my own personal home email I let it pile up on purpose. I never get sent any large files so my entire inbox is tiny when compared to how much disk space I have.
Ever since we broke the 100gb barrier I've basically ignored all space management. I stockpile shit I would have never done in the past. The reason? I don't ever get close to filling my hard drives up. If I do it's because of large games/programs, not my inbox or backup folders.
Ironic that this is posted now, because I've been given a list of people here at work with mailboxes that range from 500mb to 3 gigs worth of crap. We're moving to a new exchange system so we need those numbers below a few hundred megabytes.
You have any idea how hard it is to get people to let go? One guy had sent email (SENT, not recieved) that dated back 2 years). Talk about packrats.

It's not about "space" management. It's about not letting things pile up.
If you watch the video, the guy makes a lot of great points about making sure shit gets done. It's not about piling up, because he specifically talks about Gmail and archiving and things like that.
