View Full Version : The 3DR vB Comic - Fnordography

Sooo, I got very very bored recently and insipred and thought hey, why not take that comic idea I always had and go with it? And I've found over the years 3DR is a great community so this is kind of my appreciation.

So I went through the photos thread here and started off. There will be at least 10 other members in the strips. While the current ones I'm working on need some revision, I still hope people will recognise who is who in the strip. I plan to have something related to their usual avatar on their t-shirts, etc.

Also I cannot guarantee humor, but y'know - the strip is kind of an inside-thing here at 3DR, and I think we have enough characters for inspiration :D

My fingers are sore from doing all this O_O, it really sucked up my time, I stayed up possibly 24 hours already. I basically took the photos and traced over them in Adobe Illustrator. The comics are done in this format, which is great because I might offer wallpapers or something for featured members :p

Enjoy, or not!

Nice work.. keep it coming.

I think it'd be better to have an ongoing story.. or something related to 3DR.. how about members gathering up and meeting for the first time or getting to meet 3D Realms staff and so on.

Could lead to some good stuff.

*insert obligatory "make me" comment here*

I'm with ADM on the storyline thing, that usually makes the comic a bit more interesting but can also make it enjoyable even when 'teh funny' isn't that good.

Nice idea..

And yeah a running storyline is definatly a good thing in comics..

Unless ofcource you plan on random humor..

Mr.Fibbles
09-28-2007, 12:10 PM
great.
A bit of a pun there in the end, pretty funny.

I think the random humor could work for this, at least for a while because, well, at times, this place is random funny. However, it would be interesting to see some story line thrown in there.

Damn you, Phait -- aside from you putting words into my mouth ("knickers" means FEMALE underwear! :o), you've also drawn me without a top on. I feel so VIOLATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :tinyted:

I'd love to tell you off for drawing me as a scrawny weakling, but unfortunately that would be like telling you off for drawing the Pope as a Catholic :( :brickwall:

Hmm, maybe this will finally be enough to inspire me to get back into doing comic strips, something I fell out of doing after starting my post-grad course in 2003... I could draw Phait as some kind of wino :D :p

Mr.Fibbles
09-28-2007, 12:14 PM
Idea:
"This one time. . .in Garland. . ."
A play on the American Pie quote ("This one time. . in band camp. . ) but involving 3DR (which is in Garland TX) and the community.

Well I'm thinking of using an average-sized body for everyone, and I based that frame off a photo of George clooney... and well if knickers are female undewear that makes it all the more amusing and questionable :o

Dave-ros
09-28-2007, 12:25 PM
No, it makes it more worthy of a huge Ted Turner picture, you meddling kid!!! My first name may be David, but my surname is not Beckham :p

(Yes, it's true, Becks wore Posh's knickers, but I'm sure it was strictly a comfort thing :o)

I would, however, be interested in learning how you do comic strips quickly -- back in 2002-3 I drew everything in pencil on squared paper (the blue lines not showing up in a greyscale scan), adjusting the scanner to bring out the contrast a bit better. However, is there a way to do it directly on computer? How good are graphic tablets?

(You'll have to tell me after I get back from Alton Towers -- I've gotta set off now, see ya ;))

Man, Phait. I always knew you had talent, but this is great. My suggestion? Just add more motion. You want to avoid Ctrl-Alt-Del syndrome (well-drawn characters with the same pose in every frame).

And what the chocolate has CTRL-ALT-DEL to do with that?

Mr.Fibbles
09-28-2007, 04:50 PM
The game freezes. It is a pretty scene, but it isn't moving.
That at least is my interpretation of Little Conqueror's comment.

Phait
09-28-2007, 05:03 PM
I understand the issue with static characters, but I'm not getting paid for this and any movement will be minimal. We'll see hands and stuff, and possibly other body angles for particular strips, but it allows me to be efficient by just grabbnig a standard body and tacking their head on.

Mr.Fibbles

"obligatory advertisements"
Made me laugh, but I am easily entertained.
Also that is a decent explanation of the community etc.

SonnyBonds

I really like the comics but I can see how people on other forums won't "get it". As Avatar said, inside jokes won't work on the outside.

Sang
10-02-2007, 04:07 PM
Me personally I think the comics are way too abrupt and the jokes don't really work - I mean the concepts you have are nice (ie hitman you sneaking up on caleb damien) but to make a good joke out of it in just 3 panels doesn't seem to be something you master just yet (but hey, neither would I)

But I guess I'm a minority on that here ;)

Also, maybe consider doing four panels instead of three... give you more room to better setups. :)

When you don't get a joke you don't find it funny.

Dave-ros
10-03-2007, 02:18 PM
You can get (understand) a joke but not find it funny... ah, how I've missed petty semantic debates :p

ADM
10-03-2007, 02:42 PM
No I don't get the jokes at all. They're a bit too "inside" for me.

Phait
10-03-2007, 02:55 PM
001 The pun of dave-ros losing his clothes in the (comic) strip (stripping?)

002 The Burger King mascot/mask which says "have it your way" <- this is an old Burger King slogan in their ads. I guess you have to be American to get it.

003 We know (or I presume we do) that Damien is a huge Blood fan, and I'm a Hitman fan - and I used to have a copy of Blood but now it's rare and pricey. So an ongoing banter between him and I is that one day I'll steal it.

ADM
10-03-2007, 03:02 PM
See the problem is that all of these are inside jokes between a few of you guys. Not really to do with the community as a whole.

That's why I initially said it'd be better to have an ongoing storyline, something that would bring people back to view further installments (think Concerned (http://www.hlcomic.com)).

Dave-ros
10-03-2007, 03:13 PM
Yes, I understood the Burger King one, but only because I guessed he was their mascot, since he was in a Simpsons movie trailer battling Krusty the Klown in a Krustyburger advert. Can't remember their current slogan over here, but it's previously been "(If you want it your way at BK) You Got It!" :p

It's not so bad: imagine if I did a comic strip about my fear of Mr. Noseybonk. Now, even my fellow Brits here are probably too young to remember a kids' show called Jigsaw in the early 1980s, so that joke would flop... until people tried Googling the name, and began to scream after seeing the film of him at the Jigsaw fan page. Aaagggghhhh!!!!

They were still humorous, but to not use your skills is a waste.
There is potential yet untapped, that is the bulk of my point.

Rider
10-09-2007, 07:48 AM
Exactly! Maybe you shouldn't focus too much on "inside humor" as there's usually only a limited potential for that. (I learned that with my Duke related comic (http://www1.freewebs.com/cubicle/CubicleComic-006.gif)) But aside from that, I don't see why you shouldn't continue...

and hey, if you for some reason can't make funny comics, team up with a funny person without art skills! :p

I have no frigging idea what's going on in that comic..but I laughed.

As for these thread comics..they're well drawn and I did smile at some of it, but as has already been said...if you based it more around a general sort of humour rather than around MSN convos between 5 or 6 people it would get much more attention ;)

I definatly don't think you should give up on it though. It has a ton of potential.

Also, Phait... in a way of trying to get more people into the comic... have you thought of selecting a group of forum members that you will use in the strip.
Doing a Bio page for the characters of sorts, and doing more angles of each character? Like a straight on shot, different sides... I know it would be more work, but a Bio page coudl at least help people understand were the humor is coming from.
