http://members.iinet.com.au/~jaherne/alienhost/downloads/poster-alien.jpg
I intended to post that, but i refused to use all those low quality pics that i found... :mryuck:
I like that one as well though... But only because of the creepiness it sort of gazes, and with that cool line there...
I liked the other one more, because it showed an actual Alien... Would be even cooler though if it wasn't all that revealed... A Silhouette of it cast from a door would have been great...

Some of them are really weird though. Like 'Muppets in Hollywood' looks like a horror movie while Terror of Mechagodzilla looks like a deleted scene from The Yellow Submarine. :D
The cast list on the poster for Star Trek IV is the only clue to what movie the poster is actually for. :o

It's a matter of personal taste, not crappy taste... So to say
I mean, you can't just say most here have crappy tastes because you for one, dislike them... You can however say, that you personally think thier choices are not good (or crappy as you like to put it, sounds so offend-ish though)... I don't know, maybe that was actually implied in your original post, but it certainly didn't sound that way, with the choice of words you used...
The thread should be re-named to "your favorite movie posters"
Obviously, it's hard to contribute ANYTHING in here if it has to satisfy everyone...

Not at all... As a big fan of the original movies, i hoped for these two universes and thier cool creepy atmospheric feel would merge into a super atmospheric movie... instead, the director made an action movie with monsters, that happen to include the Alien and Predator characters...
And just including the characters, isn't enough to get anywhere near as the awesomeness that is the first couple of original movies in where the characters are from...
Hard to judge from the AVP2 trailer if it'll be good... For me it seems they are going to add a feel much more similar to the original alien and predator movies... i'm certain they won't get "just as good", but i personally thought the trailer of AVP2 was more "Alien and Predator" than the COMPLETE first AVP movie... Again, not saying i think it'll be like the original movies, but i'm sure it'll get alot nearer than the first ever was...
This whole post actually belongs in the AVP2 movie thread, haha...

Just my opinion, but almost none of the posters posted here are what I would consider "the best"-- either in creativity or artistic composition (Premonition being one exception). Some of my favorites:
The Exorcist-- iconic and compelling
Scarface-- highly influencial design
Pulp Fiction-- perfectly captures the feel of the movie
Star Wars (Luke holding saber above head)-- Classical and influencial
Pink Floyd's The Wall-- still scary

The "Reservoir Dogs" that Hudson posted looks great, but the tag lines really detract from the piece. I use this as an example.

Not at all, you state it as a afact...
I personally don't think the posters i submitted here are crappy, because i think those are classic movies, and therefor the posters for them are memorable, cool, or simply just good looking... Either of those, make them my favorite poster...
It could be any movie... Maybe it looks like crap today, but it may have a nostalgic feel to it, or simply be a classic among many people, therefor being a "best movie poster" for those people...
So, it's your opinion alone really, you need to say that as well, because it makes you sound (not to be offensive here, but i don't know any other word for it) as a smartass to be honest... Because you state it as a global fact, and not as a apersonal opinion...

Some of the posters offered are from cool movies, which then influences the perception of the poster. Take The Matrix poster, for instance: cool movie, with cool characters, but not a great poster. Its just a character line-up. Absolutely nothing wrong with liking/loving the poster, but the artistic merits are dubious, imo.

Yeah, that's him all right. Take into consideration he WAS 15-16 years younger when that movie was made...And if you've seen the movie you should recognize that as the bried standoff between Mr. White and Mr. Pink right before Mr. Blond walks in.

I do see thefly's point, even if he is rather obtuse in trying to make it.
The majority of Hollywood posters are highly formulaic (http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/MG/196439~Lethal-Weapon-4-Posters.jpg). Lead characters in front, minor characters in back, and hire some English 101 dropout to do the tagline, which is horribly formulaic and/or contrived in and of itself.
"One Man! One Mission! NO WAY OUT!" or something like that.
They show the people who the stars are and what to expect in terms of genre. Their whole purpose is marketing, creativity be damned.
The Polish posters are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Although sometimes overly avant garde (Alien? (http://retrocrush.buzznet.com/archive2006/polishposters/alien.jpg) The vagueness can be detrimental to marketing.), they can be really outstanding from the drivel we're used to (case in point, Fat City (http://www.polishposter.com/images/0380.jpg)).
I'm not 100% supportive of either way - a good movie poster ought to have some creativity infused into it while still serving its initial purpose as a marketing device for the film.

Edit: Actually I do have a movie poster in mind, but I can't find a picture of it. It was at this mall called the Forum 303 in Arlington, TX back in the '80s. It was for Star Trek 4. It was about 30 yards long and 15 yards tall. Hand painted. It was up there for at least a decade. God I wish I had a picture of it.
Well, not that i'm claiming that the poster you are pointing out is "whatever google pops up", and neither am i saying that it's a bad poster (because i haven't seen it yet)
But, you can in no way guarantee that it will be liked, and concidered as one of "the best" posters...
We should also clarify what our definition of "the best" is based of... Is it the poster that majority likes, or is it just a simple personal opinion..?
If majority is the case, you have to keep in mind that it doesn't in any way mean that those minor groups who dislike it have "crappy taste", because what if one of these persons posted another pic of a poster you actually liked..?
That suddenly makes the person a person with crappy AND good taste, which kinda puts him into a neutral position...
What i'm saying here is, that it's not fair to use this technique to base your opinion on a "best poster"
For what i could know, it might be several other ways of deciding what's crap and what's not, but you'd have to mention how you decide it firs then, before we can discuss that...
And don't tell me it's because you think it's simply crappy, that's once again, your own personal opinion, not that of the majority, or of the 'experts' or whatever else method that is used to figure out what's "best"
I said somehting like this earlier, but the author of this thread should point out more exactly what he means with "best movie posters"... Else it will only be spanmmed by what the people here have as favorite posters (like the case is right now)

Thread is simple:
post movie posters you think are the best.

The thread should be re-named to "your favorite movie posters"
Obviously, it's hard to contribute ANYTHING in here if it has to satisfy everyone...
My wish came true :woot:
well, sort of...

I like the Polish poster for The Terminator. The Polish title ("Electronic Murderer") has an interesting ring to it.

Well you could just try googling for it.

This isn't cool or badass but it is a great movie poster. This one picture tells you everything you need to know about the character.

Both are highly indicative of their respective film's themes and content while also leaving a lot up to the imagination.
Less is more when it comes to movie posters, in my opinion.

I missed Platoon. Nice one. Very iconic.
