View Full Version : Need new firewall
Because ZoneAlarm isn't really effective - and it's eating 100% of my CPU at a lot of times for no reason..

kerio firewall 2.1.5 - thats the last free version of it. It does everything a firewall should.

If you have a router you really don't need anything more than windows firewall.

My favourite personal firewall is Outpost v4. Agnitum recently released their 2008 edition, but I don't want to get it until it has matured a bit.
Outpost offers unprecedented OS protection via their anti-leak features. Also, it has a plug-in system where you can extend the functionality with a blocklist among other things.
If you have a router you really don't need anything more than windows firewall.
But what if the Windows Firewall isn't good enough?

Had a hell of a time getting Kerio to not totally lock down the whole network, it seemed like it just wanted ignore any rules we put in, unless it was told to just allow anything, any direction...
We then tried Commodo and it worked great and I believe is free...

Never had that problem with Kerio, though with Zonealarm my internet just
gets cut off.

If you need outbound protection, it is not good enough. A router won't be able to protect you from nefarious programs on your computer which hijack trusted processes to either send out info or download "bad stuff".

Sunbelt Personal Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/Download/) which is the successor to the Kerio firewall. It's still free for personal use. I like it.

I use Comodo. It's been asking me to update to v3.0 which I did last night and it seems to be a very improved update so far. Need to see how it reacts to more than my basic apps but it's become a lot less hands on.
I'll give Commodo a try sometime (when I get really really reaaaally fed up with ZA - after all I'm not the one "in charge" of this PC).
Hope the creators of that program don't get so feature-hungry as Zone Labs.. There was a time when ZA was a good firewall but now I have to make sure it allows my back door to open if I want to go outside, so to speak.

Is Commondo safe, also is Windows Firewall good and secure because I play games online like, Prey, Doom 3, Deus Ex 1, how easy is it to install any blue screens.

I'll try it . How good is it with Broadband wireless router
I just installed Comodo do you just turn it on in Windows XP. I just installed and a green tick with all systems are active and running. Is that how you do it. Wish I heard of this before.:)
