View Full Version : Node Count?
Hi guys! smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
I've been playing UT with the 'stat fps' command enabled.
Now, I understand what the poly's mean, but what does node count represent?
Is it higher the number, lower the framerate? And if so how do I go about ensuring that I keep down the node count?
Thanks, as always! smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Nodes are the vertex over a polygon. A floating triangle sheet has three. Lower is better. I used to aim for 360-400 nodes limit (with no polylimit). Now I work to an 800 node limit and no poly limit.
It can be kept down by good techniques I guess. Sorry, thats the advice I can give.
Hey thanks Theseus that helps quite a bit, but 800 you say. Jeez I'm already on 756 and I'm no where near finished! smilies/images/icons/frown.gif
It still runs with a really nice frame-rate
though! smilies/images/icons/confused.gif

Xiu, is that the number you see when playing your level with the 'stat fps' command?
Or the total for the whole level?
If it's the total, relax.

quote:
An UnrealEd level has a practical limit of 15,000 BSP nodes and 7,500 polygons. You can see these statistics in the Rebuilder dialog. Though you may be able to create larger levels than this, they will perform badly. In general, smaller is better - a 5000-node level will be significantly faster than a 15,000 node level.

That's from a help file that someone compiled.
I've read somewhere that when you play your level you should try to keep the nodes/polys ratio to 2:1.

Damn, there's a good tutorial explain nodes, if I only could remember where it is. smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Gah, sorry I was talking about per frame, not total smilies/images/icons/wink.gif. A well zoned level can easily be as full of (total) nodes as you can build.
Waaaaaa! Heart attack over. Phew!
You sure know how to scare me Theseus. smilies/images/icons/grin.gif
Thanks for all your help and smattbac. You've put me mind at rest. I can now sleep peacefully, until my next Unreal-Ed problem. smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
