View Full Version : Ladders?

I was wondering if any of you know how to make ladders in UT?
I already figured out that you can use really steep stairs but that kind of sucks...
Is there any other way to do it?
I appreciate any help.

writing a script would probably be easiest

Here's a test map I made for UT that has a working ladder. Right-click and "Save As" on the link to get the picture. (http://www.geocities.com/mrnutwrench_2000/testladder.jpg) You can get the file here. (12k) (http://www.geocities.com/mrnutwrench_2000/TestLadder.zip)

The easiest way to do it without scripting is to enclose your ladder in a seperate Zone and change the gravity so that it points towards the wall. (This helps keep the player stuck to the ladder on the way down, as well)

I also enclosed the ladder itself in a collision hull so that the player doesn't get snagged on the rungs. This map could be improved by adding a 'ladder climbing sound' but I don't have any idea how to do that.

This works fine for single player. I don't think the bots have any 3rd-person climbing animations, so even if you could get them to use it in a DeathMatch map, they would just 'float' up the ladder, which would look really weird. smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Nice, never thought about that. I've been making latters the buddy pickle way (one of the INF team members) just add an invisible collision hall using the stair brush. But it would be nice to have a ladder script that make is were you can move up or down freely on a ladder/s.

Thanks guys, I'll try that Nut...
I sure hope the bots are able to navigate it.

I needed to know this because I'm making a CTF map that takes place in a city and I wanted some fire escapes for getting up into sniping points.
I'll keep you guys updated if it turns out all right.

Wow Nut, your ladder works pretty damn well...
However, it feels like you're in one of those anti-gravity tunnels in the beginning of System Shock 2.
Also, I am not sure how I could get a bot to jump into the ladder...
I could make an "automatic" ladder using a kicker to give you a bit of a nudge up once you get to the ladder, bots could easily handle that.
I'm not sure what people would think of that though. smilies/images/icons/tongue.gif

I'll have to experiment.
