Here's a quick note to let everyone know that we've released a new patch for Prey, v1.4. It's available now, and here's a summary of what's changed in this new update from the readme:
Prey v1.4 Readme
Compatibility files for the Japanese release of Prey.
The disc check is removed from the game.
There are no bug fixes or new content in this release. The release is backwards compatible with Prey v1.2 and v1.3 in multiplayer.
Also included with the patch is updated Windows based dedicated server files. Updated dedicated server files for Linux are available over at icculus.org (http://icculus.org/news/news.php?id=4363).
Click here (http://www.3drealms.com/prey/download.html) to get to our Prey downloads page, which contains links where you can download the patch. Please note that this patch is only for the standalone PC game - If your copy of Prey was through Steam, do not use this patch, Steam users will be handled through that system. There is no update for the Xbox 360 game necessary, nor is there a patch available for the Macintosh version of Prey, although one for the Mac will be forthcoming later in the month.

Nice enough.. Just one question though..
I assume the "Compatibility files for the Japanese release of Prey", will also come to the Steam version.
Any estimate on when the update hits Steam??

It was supposed to be there at launch with the standalone patch. Not sure what happened. Valve was sent it. Will investigate.

Should have been a whole sentence, I just broke it of to 2 segments.. Sorry about the confusion.

As I said, this update is supposed to be on Steam. When? It should have been there already. Hopefully will find out tomorrow what's going on with that.

It was previously supposed to do a cd check? O.o Or am I misunderstanding what you mean by this.
I installed the game via a external USB drive (that I borrowed cause I didn't have a dvd drive at the time) on my vista ultimate PC. It never asked me for the CD and I never did anything to the game. The only thing that I can think of that may have had some effect whatsoever is I have Autoplay completely turned off via the global policy editor, but that shouldn't really. Oh well. :D

Thanks for the patch, might make it easier for mp, although checking it, there was only one person on in total... :(

Thanks for the patch. The CD check should have been lifted since 1.2, really.
I still haven't tried the new content. Still reeling from the original taste. how is it? Are the servers populated?
I'll check it out on my next down time.
That's nice, was going to reinstall Prey this weekend. :)

And just run the game :D

So you do not need the DVD to be in the computer while playing the game, cool.
I already have the prey1.3 patch is it okay to install over that.

Does the patch include the updates that were made for v1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, or does another patch need to be installed before this one?
^It includes all the fixes from the previous patches.

This patch will work the existing registered versions of Prey (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3)
In other words, RTF.. nevermind.. :)

The disc check is removed from the game.
Oh hell yes! Thank god some developers are still doing this, thanks a lot guys! :D
It beats using free Alcohol/Daemon Tools mini images, etc.. swapping discs are a pain in the ass.

The disc check is a nice feature.
If I hadn't tied my PREY to my Steam account I would be very happy right now. But a question, have any of the patches ever brought dual core support?
I remember Human Head saying in an interview (or something) that while PREY didn't have dual core support at release they would add it in in a patch. I don't remember that happening, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Not that I'm aware of.

I downloaded that patch too, and i've got one question about modding. I hope it's not too off topic.:)
I don't hang on a lot in this forum and don't know if there are any good mods for Prey. I would like to try them, so if someone could give me a tipp or two, i would aprreciate that.:D

Any news on when it hits Steam..
As it seems the Steam version still hasn't implemented the 1.4 Update

Unless you're in Japan then it doesn't look like there's anything in this patch for you, and since Steam already dispenses with CD checks, I'm not sure what you're expecting here.

Fair point, but it should be consistent. I'll ask.

I know that.. :)
But a patch is a patch afterall.. And I just expect it to be put on Steam as well. I always have the latest official patches installed for all my games.. Reguardless if it fixes issues I have or not..
I don't know how to explain it properly, but it just doesn't sit with me knowing that there's a patch and that I haven't applied it.. It's sort of the same feeling I have when I'm missing something in a collection..
Like only having 3 of the Tremors movies and not the 4th one..

That would be a good thing.
Anyway, I asked at HH, and they were under the impression it was supposed to go out at the same time over Steam as when I released the standalone patch.
Believe me - I understand the "gotta use current" more than you think I would.
Having said that, you aren't honestly missing anything. It's being looked into, I'm not blowing it off, but I am on vacation this week, and unless you want to play against someone from Japan, there's no technical changes by not having it over Steam.

By any chances, might the Mac Patch enable the infamous "preditor" GUI?
-I'm usually ignored when mentioning the AppleOS in a question... ha ha

Yeah I know I don't need it :)
I just think it's wierd that the patch isn't released on steam yet, when all the other patches were released on Steam..
Since Steam versions should get the latest patches, reguardless off their content..

Did this just get updated on Steam? I popped up my games tab and noticed it was updating, but no mention anywhere that it had been updated...

Well if you open the console it should say 1.4.119 in the bottom right corner..
If the 1.4 patch is applied that is..

Bingo, apparantly it has been updated on Steam, thats what my version is, 1.4.119...
I thought something was up, b/c even the "created" date on the Prey.exe was 3/5/08 and I hadn't touched the game since beating it over a month ago... nothing mentioned in the update page though...

Does that work? I've "attached" my copy of prey to steam but I'm still using the retail version.

Ice-Cold reality, eh? Thanks for at least crushing my hopes of editing in the Prey environment... before I would have gone crazy trying to figure out what I must have been doing wrong in my (fruitless) attempts at accessing PReditor
really though, thanks, IceColdDuke... thanks for the answer

Yes just start installing Prey on Steam and let it download to 1%
Then Pause the update, quit Steam and copy your retail version of Prey's "base" folder to your Steam Prey folder
Located here: (Where X is your drive name and Y your folder structure)
X:\Y\Steam\steamapps\common\prey
Start Steam again resume download and it will download the rest of the files (exe files and PunkBuster files)
That way you won't have to download all the pak files..
