Game Informer got an exclusive on the next Resistance game. I don't have my magazine yet, but from what I've read on the net it sounds awesome. (Here's a picture of the cover. (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a68/superevilcube/gicoverfeb08.jpg))
Here's the forum post I got this from. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=226865)
Here's a breakdown on some of the features:
Two campaigns - Single Player and Co-Op
Split screen or up to 8 players online
60 player competitive multiplayer. Games will consist of squads from 4 to 8 players, with each squad having specific objectives to accomplish.
"Overcoming stigma that boss encounters don't work in FPS games"
PS3 exclusive (of course)
Release Fall 2008
Although 60 player MP could be pretty epic, I hope they do the same thing they did with R:FoM (each map having multiple sizes).I can't wait to get my issue, but for some reason they always come late... like, a month late :o

Huh? Some of my most memorable boss fights were FPS ones. (Duke 3D, Doom, Painkiller, Serious Sam, Quake 2, Goldeneye, etc. etc. etc.)

I think they're referring to more recent FPSs like Halo.

So... will they fix what was the biggest insult with the first Resistance? Will co-op be playable online this time?
Seriously, that was a big hit for a lot of people.

Yup, 8 player co-op online (or two player split screen). Hopefully the co-op campaign is more like an actual campaign, and not something like the GRAW co-op.

That will make a lot of people happy. It was one of the biggest complaints I heard about with R:FoM.

i say they're going to forget another feature just like they did with the first one:
- making it a fun game (not another generic fps)

RFoM was a fun game, it didn't bring anything new to the table though, but it was fun so I don't what you're talking about.
Res2 sounds almost too good to be true. 8 player online co-op? 60 player MP? Wow.

This sounds awesome, R:FOM was an awesome title.. especially one for launch! (360 owners had to wait a year for a title like this). I can't wait to see what kind of insane and interesting weaponry they can cook up for the sequel ;)
Looks like the PS3 library is finally looking up, about damned time.

This is awesome news, I just read about it on IGN. That multiplayer's going to be amazing.

Haze, Resistance 2, GTA4, MGS4, Wipeout HD are a few I'm interested in, along with already released titles like Drake's Fortune and Ratchet & Clank.

But back on topic - I can't wait to see the new weapons Insomniac's going to cook up for this one.

I just hope they manage to improve on a solid, if rather derivative, foundation this time.
I still cannot fathom why middling to average console FPS games get so much praise for doing nothing exceptional.

I know what you mean. R:FoM wasn't a knockout title by any means IMO, but it did a lot of things right. It had an interesting, fresh story, fun gameplay and large-scale multiplayer, but aside from the weapons, the game didn't have anything totally groundbreaking. It's still loads of fun, so I think it deserved the attention it received.

...he says as if there have been a whole raft of PC-exclusive FPS games over the past 5 years that have done anything exceptional. Your beloved platform, the birthplace of the shooter, has been just as bereft of any innovation in the genre.
Seriously, there haven't been any FPS on any platform that have added much to the genre since HL2, and that's going back a hell of a long way. I really don't know why people even think in terms of platform anymore. Those days are gone, whether you like it or not. There are just shooters, some good, some bad, most mediocre.

Maybe not innovative, per se, but there are still good shooters. Resistance got praise because it was a high-profile console-exclusive launch title. If it were to be released on PC (or 360 for that matter) it wouldn't be much of a big name. A game doesn't have to be innovative to be good.
Damien_Azreal

I think that's my biggest problem with Resistance. It's an average shooter at best, but people tend to praise it like nothing else.
But, as you said... if it had launched on a different, established system... nobody would care.

That's why I'm waiting for Killzone 2...and hoping it's actually intense enough to justify a purchase. Halo is by no means the best shooter out there but it's still pretty fun and I want something with good production values and fun co-op that I can play on my PS3. :D

Halo gets it's credit for the same reason Resistance gets it's. Killzone 2, not sure where it's getting all it's credit from. I remember after Killzone was released, all the hate and negative feedback... buggy, bad performance, poor AI.... seems a lot of console fanboys forgot all that when they saw the graphics for Killzone 2.

Fair enough, and ya, Aegeri's post did focus on quality rather than innovation, so I focussed on the wrong thing in my response.
The reason certain console shooters get hyped so much compared to PC-only shooters (is there such a thing anymore? with a few exceptions I'd say pretty much no) is very simple. There are big companies behind the marketing for the console shooters, and the same cannot be said for the PC shooters. Microsoft will hype the hell out of Halo, and Sony will hype the hell out of Resistance, because they are console exclusive and are therefore seen as something that differentiate them from the competition and in turn may sell their particular brand.
No such dynamic exists in the world of PC gaming.
I still think the whole discussion is becoming more and more moot, because 99% of everything is released on all platforms.

It's HALO all over again. :p

It's worse because at least Halo improved on console FPS controls, doing something that at least warranted some sort of notice and praise. The original resistance was just an average FPS, I can't think of one thing in Resistance that made me think "That was especially awesome". Call of Duty 4 and Crysis, both made me stop and think precisely that at various moments.
I don't care about Innovation, I care about doing all the mechanics in the game really well. Resistance was just another FPS game, but at least it wasn't anywhere near as bad as HAZE. That game takes being terribly average to an entirely new level.
I have no idea where he got the "PC" part from. I play every FPS I can get my hands on, even if I have to track down a friend to do so. I do concede that I think console FPS games are generally worse, but this is not always the case as Call of Duty 4 I think didn't "suffer" at all from console development and is a really great FPS regardless of platform.

I disagree. I think marketing is a factor but not as strong a factor as the social nature of console shooters. Halo wouldn't have worked without co-op. That's why the PC version is really only worth playing for the online component.

I think co-op was a big bonus for Halo for sure, but I know tons of people who played and loved it without ever playing co-op (myself included). I think marketing is 90% of the reason why console shooters get so much attention. How often do you even see a commercial for a PC-only game? It's pretty limited.
I do agree that the social nature of console shooters is a big plus however. It's one of the reasons that despite any control issues I prefer playing shooters on the console now over the PC.

Well it was pretty cinematic. The voice work was good and there was a definite sense of something epic going on. Again, I know it's not a great series of games, but I still enjoyed Halo quite a bit. I honestly can't remember any commercials for the first one though  There was a lot of word-of-mouth, that's for sure. I think marketing helped the third one a lot, especially with reviewers (I've heard a lot of people saying it was a letdown and didn't deserve the praise it got). If you go back to the first one, though, I don't think the praise was necessarily undeserved.

I haven't even touched it. The whole free-camera thing really seems like a gimmick to show people that something new is happening when in reality they ran out of ideas after introducing dual-wielding in the second one.
Anyway this is really off-topic. Resistance 2. Yeah I played the demo for the first one and hated it.

I'd love to play Resistance and it's sequel, but they are not the games that will get me to shell out for a PS3, and there are no other PS3 exclusives that will make me do that yet either. If Killzone 2 ends up being a huge app (not holding my breath, but keeping an open mind) then collectively I'd be pushed a little closer. Sony lost a lot when they lost GTA exclusivity. If they still had that I'd already own a PS3.
Daveman
07-06-2008, 12:58 AM
Rockstar would've been insane to stay exclusive. A 100 million dollar game can't be sold on just one system if it's going to be as profitable as possible. Actually, the thing that hurts it more is the strange architecture, because the PS3 version is actually the weaker of the two. :(
The PS3 really does need a great exclusive FPS. Haze sucks according to just about everybody and Resistance is mediocre. Killzone really could be good. I like the atmosphere.
Monkey Butler
07-06-2008, 02:48 AM
Yeah, although the first Killzone was worse than your average shooter, Sony seem to realise that they need a killer IP, and from all reports they're pumping tons of money into making sure it becomes the PS3's Halo/GoW.
