I downloaded Vega Strike (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/) last night, and it's actually a pretty good game, all things considered. It also happens to be 100% free. I'm just wondering what other free games are out there that are worth the time to download and install.

One Must Fall 2097 is one of the best games ever and it's totally free... Uou'll need to set up a computer with Win98/DOS or use DOSBox but it's worth the trouble... Did you think fighting games only were good at consoles?? Think again! The best fighting game in the world is for the PC!

FlightGear Flight Simulator (http://www.flightgear.org/#overview)
It's not as slick as Microsoft's offerings, but it has decent graphics, good flight modeling, gobs of community support, and it's free!

Phait - I'd watch it. Thats shaky ground. I'm positive VUgames has stated it's not freeware, just free for a limited period to promote Return to Krondor.
However since I believe such statements are retarded (How can you know how many copies were downloaded? You can't.) I'd say download away.

Games not sold should anymore should be freeware. But that's another discussion.

Perhaps for this thread we should steer clear of retail games unless there is a current and explicit declaration from the publisher/developer that the game can be downloaded for free.

GTA and GTA2 are both freeware now. Rockstar have put them up on their official website for free, and they are on STEAM for free download as well.

Actually I don't see a spot to download them on steam. I think you either get them from the website, or buy a GTA pack.

I used to play that 2 years ago, it was quite a fun game but there were many cheaters. Is the inernational edition out of beta now? I don't see any info on that at ijji.

Yeah, the GTA pack is the only way on STEAM. I mistyped what I meant.

Gametap has 60+ free games all the time, though only a handful of them are recent. They swap some every now and then. Hitman 1-3 and Psychonauts have been on there for a while, and Tomb Raider Legend has been for like 4 months.
Gametap's only available in US and Canada I think though.

Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory (http://enemy-territory.4players.de:1041/news.php)

The best Tower Defense type game I've come across:
Xeno Tactic (http://www.onlinegamesquad.com/?1085-1)
It's just a flash (I'm sure you don't want every single fun little flash game littering this thread) but I just had to post this because it's so seriously addictive on later levels.
That is unless you've already worn yourself out on the whole genre.

Zombie City Tactics (http://secretblender.blogspot.com/2006/08/brains-have-it.html).
It's simple, yet awesome. Mix, and serve over rice. ;)
It's basically an Ogre Battle / Final Fantasy Tactics-type deal but it has a variation or two on the formula.
Oh -- And that's the only place I can find to download it, so you may have to wait if the server gets bogged down.
