http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.nfo

NFO files usually contain release information about a software program. They are commonly associated with warez groups who include them to declare credit of and "bragging rights" over said release. Similarly they are often found in demoscene productions, where the respective groups include them for credits, contact details, and the software requirements.

IFO files are associated with DVDs though:

Change font to Terminal, use fat text, and size 9

I usually use Wordpad if Notepad fails.

its an image, not a text, thank you. It has files in it, like a zip, or iso

IIRC an .nfo is a Nero image... but it's like iwantmore said, could have also been an info file...

yeah, nfo is one of Nero's file format.
MagicISO and Nero will open them and burn them to disc.

I usually use Wordpad if Notepad fails.

DAMN NFO Viewer works really well for this purpose. It's also good for File_id.diz's

If you're not sure what program can open a file or simply want to find out about an unknown file type, FileInfo.net is usually very helpful:

http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/nfo

In this case, though they don't seem to have NFO also listed as a Nero Image or as a Microsoft system information file. I'm going to suggest those two file types to them just now.

EDIT: @Dopefish: What program opened it in the end then? I checked and NFO does not appear to be the Nero image format.

Well an easy way to tell if its an image or an info is just the size of it alone...
