View Full Version : PC Gamer "Huge Announcement"

I'm one of the guys who likes to read magazines websites to gain new info about upcoming games. Read this (http://www.pcgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31670) little thread and especially this post: PC Gamer has this huge announcement coming for April or says their little blurb
I'm really curios to know more. We will know more in early march, thats the date when the April issue of PCGamer is coming out. I'm crossing my fingers for DNF, now it's possible more than ever!
Bleh, wont you learn, it's an old marketing gag. The big announcment is probably "The Sims: Milking the Cow Collector's Edition" or something like that.

Pacman 2. Huge in game magazine language means microscopically tiny.
Marty
02-04-2008, 06:44 AM
yeah, these "huge announcements" they keep making are old and are never DNF related so its pointless for me :D
last one i believe (not sure if it was from PC Gamer) was for Sim City Societies, and that game blows
IwantMORE
02-04-2008, 06:50 AM
It's huge but not gigantic.
I think it's safe to say that it looks like the wait might finaly be over and we will get a release date some time this year...
The last times we had huge announcements like this they ended up being for Street Fighter and Sim City. Not really expecting this to be any better, but one can dream..

I know these gags, but a huge announcement 3 months after the "stay tuned" DNF teaser is so fitting.
19th December 2007 - teaser
29th January 2008 - exclusive interview with the art director
early March 2008 - exclusive reveiling of the game in PC Gamer
some days later - publicly released trailer
conclusion: a classic way of reveiling a game

Pacman 2. Huge in game magazine language means microscopically tiny.
but they allready used the superlatives for games like Sim City Societies :p what should they call a DNF preview? "In our next issue we preview the ULTRA MEGA ÜBER Game of an allready forgotten franchise"?! :p

I couldn't get excited about any possible titles until you said that :)
I would love to see another version of this classic game, there's nothing like some good ol destruction in a car and now with tech like Havok and Natural Motion, the gameplay could be amazing.
One of the only other titles I would wet myself seeing would be Blood.

Duke Nukem Forever: Endangered Species.
yes what is if 3D Realms reanimates Duke Nukem: Endangered Species with another external developer because Action Forms was to bad to make a good Duke hunting FPS (HFPS). Hey Action Forms coded one of the badest games of all time: Vivisector. They currently make Cryostatis: Sleep of Reason.
But on the other hand Endangered Species would take the thunder of DNF away. :o

Bears you say? Oblivion had bears. . .
Do you know how many games have bears? Even reaching back into the "classic series" section there are a lot of choices.
Probably Rollercoaster Tycoon with bears as entertainers.
Then you get pretty much every RPG in mythical lands where you get "random encounters" like things in the wilderness with bears, lions, wolves, etc.
Could be anything, probably nothing.

True, most likely it's a game that isn't good enough to attract allot of people so
they give the good old "OMG IT'S HUGE!" act.

I think the Command and Conquer 3 one wasn't a burn. You (meaning the forums, not you Damien) all burned me on that one after I predicted right and then also had the issue to prove it. :tinyted:
The only other cryptic one I recall is the one prior to the Far Cry 2 issue. I don't think that's a burn. Most of the other issues inbetween they had first reviews and lists, not special annoucements.

I don't really care about review scores.... PC Gamer gave Doom 3 a high rating, because the reviewer loved the game. The review score was his personal opinion... that's all any review really is.
I stopped reading PC Gamer due to the bad decisions made to the magazine over the years. They've lost all the credible writers they had (except for Chuck), issues now are barely 50 pages... and I have issues from 1999 that were almost 200.
Short, paragraph reviews that don't really give you any insight.... and half the issue now is simply adds.

Not all of them are short. The big titles definately have big ones, like Bioshock and Oblivion did. Orange Box as well. It's usually the games you never heard of that get small reviews.
But most of it is due to diminishing requests for magazines since mostly everything is online.

PC Gamer used to be great... but are steadily getting worse and worse. And remember Zuljin... this is simply my personal opinion. ;) You can like them all you want. :)
Then listen to the podcast.

I shouldn't have to listen to a podcast to get decent reviews and such from a magazine. ;)

They don't do reviews. They do it weekly so they have more news and its more in depth. They got listener questions and its more fun. It's kinda like an extension. The reason the magazine is getting smaller and smaller and filled with more ads is because of demand.
Damien_Azreal
02-05-2008, 09:37 PM
Not my point.
The podcast won't fix my issues with the magazine. Small reviews, lack of content... and so on. The podcasts don't fix that... and they are not for me. I've listened to them before, no thank you. :)

I never said it does fix the issues, I just said it's more in-depth with some news.

I do hope youre not slagging off FunLabs. One of my all-time favourite games was developed by them (Secret Service). A proper sequel to that (Razor Unit doesn't count) would be heaven.
Back on topic, knowing magazines nowadays, it's probably a game you'll forget about in minutes (as other people have previously implied).

but mainly, i hated reading it 2 weeks late, so w/e.

That's weird, I got mine before they went on shelves, and it always came with the disk. Of course, I never used the disk, but still!
I unsubscribed because I moved to school and because they were usually really late on most reviews. It's not too bad, but I can't help but feel they were a little generous with Crysis. I mean, yeah, it was a little free-roaming, but it still had really wonky AI a lot of the time.

There are two versions of subscriptions. One with the cd and one without. Perhaps somehow when you filled out your's, it got marked for no cd.
I stopped my Pc Gamer subscription for when I went into the military I had 4 months I wasn't going to read it then I just got used to not having the subscription and just reading whatever article at the bookstore ;)
That and they have sure been getting slimmer over the years. I still have ones from 1998 or around then that were big FAT 200+ page magazines not full of ads . Shame :(

I got started my subscription like 2 years ago and got issues (with discs) always 2 weeks or so before they went on sale on newsstands.

Surely you are not slagging off biowares deep, complex and genre pushing opening locks minigame that requires, not just one, but four different kinds of button presses within around 1-2 seconds of one another to acomplish successfully.
Say it ain't so!

Maybe it's an "exclusive" review of that new Lost game. It's technically part of a series, and it involves [polar] bears...
