View Full Version : eDuke32 problem
I apologize if this is the wrong place for this post, I tried my best finding the answer to my problem but in the end I was unsuccessful.
My problem with eDuke32 is I can't seem to run it in 32bpp mode. I can run it in 8bpp just fine but when I try to launch the game in 32bpp I get gray screen then shortly after the program (eDuke32) just closes. I do not get any error messages, the program just quits after few seconds of being started.
My PC specs are: Pentium D CPU, ATI Radeon x1900xt video card and 2gb of ram. I got this problem with eDuke 1.4.0 beta 2 and latest snapshots (from January 26, 2008). I can't seem to fix the problem.
Thanks in advance and once again, I apologize if I posted this message in wrong place.

Can you please post the log file of eduke32.log
That might give us some insight into what is happing.

This happened to me as well. I just had to run EDuke32 in 8-bit, then switch to 32-bit from within the program. I cannot recall what did it. If this is indeed the same problem as what i had, everything would turn blue when in game after switching color depth. Tell me if this is what happens.

Everything switching blue only happens on crappy videos cards, Hes using a x1900 and im using a x1950 Pro so I dont think its the video card...
The log should be attached to this post... I did not catch any errors. I did find the question on a HRP site but the answer it provided does not apply to me. It said that gray screen problem is caused by lack of OpenGL and I am positive my video card supports OpenGL (using latest ATI catalyst drivers, by the way).

It cannot get the secondary buffer as it appears, but then again... I'm probably wrong on that one. :p
Dunno, did you try what I mentioned?
@The Commander: Its a possibility, so just in case that happens to be the problem...

Try using this snapshot:
http://wiki.eduke32.com/stuff/eduke32_snapshot_20070901.zip
It is the one before the latest.
You might want to delete your duke3d.cfg first.

Unfortunately that did not help (and yes, I deleted eduke3d.cfg first). Still same problem, gray screen for a few seconds after program (eDuke32) starts then crashes to desktop shortly after.
EDIT: Just tried changing color depth from within the game. Unfortunately that causes same problem as when I try to launch with 32bpp. Gray screen followed by a crash.

It sounds pretty hopeless, but you might as well try running it in windowed mode if you haven't already.

I tried both, full screen and windowed mode, same problem unfortunately.

Does unpluging your PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller Help? It also says,
Loading GLU32.DLL, What is this DLL I dont have this one in any of my logs?

Tried unplugging it, unfortunately the same problem is still there.
As for GLU32.DLL, after doing quick google search, it appears to be one of Microsoft OpenGL files. Information Here (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/glu32/19287).
I will try re-installing my graphics drivers and see if that helps.
EDIT: Well found the problem. Seems like ATI Tray Tools were responsible for this bug. Once I exited out ATI Tray Tools, game started fine. Now to look into what exactly ATI Tray Tools or it's options did to break eDuke32 in 32bpp...
Thanks for all your help!

Thats very strange, Im also using ATI Tray tools but its not making my Eduke chrash, Are you overclocking at all? Or it must be a differnt setup that you are using to me.

Nope, nothing is overclocked. Using ATI's Catalyst 8.1 drivers along with latest ATI Tray Tools. No idea why ATI Tray Tools are causing a crash.

Probably because ATI Tray Tools is trying to load some framerate counter of its own by intercepting GLU32.

You are correct. That is what the problem was. After I disabled on screen display (all of it), the game started just fine with out any crashes.
Thank you for all your help guys. This problem drove me nuts.
