Im kind of sick of using Windows Media Player to watch DVDs as it's kind of rubbish and stinks of fish. Does anyone know a really good DVD player for Windows Vista - either freeware or with a reasonable price. Thanks guys!

It's pretty good. I use Vista media centre for playing my DVDs and it's top-notch. (HTPC)

Other than media player I'd recommend powerDVD.

Maybe I'm being too harsh on it then. Things that bug me are the lack of bookmarks (at this point I guess someone will mention that it has perfectly good bookmarks and I'll feel like a bit of an idiot). Also it would be nice to be able to skip all the hateful unskipable ads that they stick on DVDs - I know most players don't allow you to do this but you have to dream. It really irks when I buy a DVD player and I buy a DVD and the two things that I own conspire against me to make me watch ads. It makes me want to go and burn things.

Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciate your suggestions. My comments about Windows Media Player are only my opinions - and they don't let me have sharp things so you can draw your own conclusions. :)

I love the KMPlayer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_KMPlayer). Plays everything out of the box. I'm not sure about bookmarks or unskippable stuff, but it should run under Vista... For unskippable stuff you might need DVD43 anyway...

VLC media player with the correct stuff?

It's excellent.

Came with my DVD player so I guess you could call it free. Although it's not if you get it separate.

PowerDVD Ultra (since I plan to add in a BD-RW/ROM on my PC eventually when prices lower on them).
That would be a nice futureproofing app in the future, when that becomes standard... Highly suggest that one.

I grew weary with PowerDVD, but this "The KMPlayer" (not to be confused with KMPlayer :p) of which Wellenreiter speaks is actually pretty good -- it's as "light" as Media Player Classic (compared to WMP11), but looks cooler, and has a lot more features for tweaking the graphics etc. Not sure if it'll still play DVDs if I uninstall PowerDVD, as I'm under the impression that you need the DVD-playing "codec" it installs... unless I was lied to by the Internet? Surely not! :p

Yes, the Interweb lied to you! :D

Weird, because Media Player Classic wouldn't play DVDs properly without PowerDVD installed (it'd show the first frame of video and keep playing sound underneath)

Anyway, I've uninstalled PowerDVD now, so I'll try The KMPlayer for DVDs again ;)

Edit: yes, works fine without PowerDVD installed -- evil duplicitous Intarnetz! :tinyted:
