Max Payne could almost have been made with the Xbox in mind. A triumph of style over substance with gorgeous graphics shown off to maximum effect thanks to the introduction of Matrix-style bullet time™ sequences, it was a fun but ultimately shallow and at times frustrating action game. The bad news is that the recently released Xbox version of the game is a half-hearted affair, a virtually straight port which fails to correct any of Max's shortcomings while adding a couple of new problems all of its own.

Not everyone's perceived "shortcomings" are actually shortcomings.

Aren't we a little LATE for reviews?? The game came out in July for crying out loud!

If you read through some of the reviews on that site, you'll notice that they are somewhat "Anti-XBox". Yea, I know that's an easy accusation to throw around, but take a look at the Five X-Box reviews and then compare the scores/comments with some of the decidedly mediocre PS2 titles they have given high scores to and you'll see what I mean. Hell, they even game the greatly inferior (sorry Remedy images/icons/wink.gif ) PS2 version of Max Payne a higher score than that for the XBox images/icons/wink.gif

Hey ford_prefect, how come you have an avatar???

And they should only review PC versions of games because consoles are for chumps and suck anyway.

Can't quite understand how they figure there's a lot of shortcomings. I haven't played the X-box version but they state that the PC version has some too... whatever, Eurogamer is a weird site...

Considering Eurogamer's very critical reviews (not saying that they are in any way wrong or bad, just their critical opinions), it is almost funny that in Eurogamer's readers' awards for the best games in 2001 Max Payne won 2 of the 3 categories it was nominated: Best Character and Cinematography... images/icons/smile.gif

Can't say that makes for an anti-xbox site.

I like Eurogamer. I like their style. Reviews are subjective anyway. The Max Payne PC review was a complete pile of shit though, and here I'm more referring to the way it was written rather than the critisisms. Gestalt has improved since then images/icons/smile.gif

They have the PS2 Max Payne 7/10 and the Xbox Max Payne 6/10? That's just wrong. Look at some of the comments under the Xbox Max Payne review, most of them are clearly anti-Xbox.

Considering Eurogamer's very critical reviews (not saying that they are in any way wrong or bad, just their critical opinions)<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">That saves a world of pain. Responding in such a mature fashion to sharp criticism is infinitely more preferable to cornering the immature defensive whiner market.

it is almost funny that in Eurogamer's readers' awards for the best games in 2001 Max Payne won 2 of the 3 categories it was nominated: Best Character and Cinematography...<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">There is nothing inconsistent or funny about it. A game could have the best character and cinematography, and still not be the best game.

I totally agree with you. A game can certainly have the best character and cinematography and not be the best game.
I thought it was almost funny that the READERS of Eurogamer thought Max was good at least in those categories, whereas Eurogamer's reviewer clearly did not appreciate those too much.

It would be nice to hear what the shortcomings are. Most of the critism I've read are the same ones I've read on this board, and it was basicly stuff the game didn't have by design. It isn't a typical adventure game, not Multiplayer, and very linear. Sorry folks, but it was intended to be a single person game. Other complaints, its too short. The couldn't play it for 8 hours straight without beating it. Hopefully, most people have a life and can't play a game that long. I loved the game and hope Max 2 doesn't have multiplayer too.
