View Full Version : Sigh

I don't know where to go right now.

I love making maps. A lot. I've spent entire nights just building worlds and making them come alive with detail and splendor.

...and that's the problem.

I want to create single-player maps. Not multiplayer. Knowing Unreal tech really well, this is a fallback since there are no big-name single-player games using the tech coming out soon. Seeing little in the way of what I want to work with in the future is saddening, because I really, really love working with levels, and Unreal in particular. It's hard to stay motivated these days.

I'm hoping for some really good single-player games w/ Unreal tech to come out soon. I hope.

*sigh*

/walks on outta here

I know exactly what you mean, single player maps are so much more satisfying.
I'm totally psyched for making maps for UT2003 just because of how much I could do with the new tech but I'm really waiting for Duke Nukem Forever. Watching the video and looking at the screenshots just makes me drool over the kinds of awesome single player maps I could make.
It will be a good day for single player when DNF is released (I hope).

Huh?

There's lots of single-player maps available for Unreal and Unreal Tournament.

Check out Strange World, Tower of Shrakith'a and Liberation of Na-Pali for Unreal. Check out Operation Na-Pali for Unreal Tournament. These are excellent single-player levels. images/icons/smile.gif

[edit]
Wow! They've finally finished Operation Na-Pali. I first saw this as when it was a 30 meg demo and had a lot of fun playing it. This mod is finally complete and tops out at around 160 megs. I'm definitely going to download it. images/icons/smile.gif

Nut, we're talking about creating maps for single player not finding them. It's all well and good to make single player maps for Unreal or Unreal Tournament but they are both old games and not many people are interested in single player maps for them.
Another problem is that for alot of the things I want to do in my levels I would need to create my own objects, textures, and other things that UT or Unreal don't have. I much prefer making urban environments to making alien environments and space ships.

^^^^

Exactly.

I'm talking about making my own single-player creations, not downloading someone else's work. Also, what Tip was saying, there are actually very few decorations we can work with in the maps. Most maps are simple rehashes of what people can do with the decorations. Maybe it's just me, but I for one am pretty disappointed to download a map and see that one simgle PipeBend in the corner, just like any other map.

We need more variety these days.

It will be alot better with UT2003. DE said they are keeping enough code in to support Single-Player campaigns easily.

Also, you can make great decorations with BSP. As for UT, that's what I would make most of my deco out of.

As for the new Unreal Tech, the gap between level designer, modeller, and artist is closing very quickly. For a totally new and inspriring creation, you'll need to make your own static meshes and your own skins for them. Also, if you want your world to be more dynamic, you'll need to learn the Karma (rigid physics) Editor with the new UnrealED. From what I have been told, it takes around 30 minutes to get pleasing results for a static mesh.

For DNF, I'm a little skeptical about making maps. The mapping itself will be easy, but IMO , making interactive elements must be easy to do without having to learn advanced DukeScript. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

Anyway, the future is exciting. images/icons/grin.gif

*sigh*<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Actually there IS already a good single-player game using the Unreal engine. It's Undying and you can download the level editor UndEd which has exactly the same interface like UnrealEd. You can even import *.t3d files and thus convert Unreal maps to Undying maps (if you don't like to start from scratch).

Undying adds tons of new classes, textures, sounds and music to UnrealEd! If you're tired with making another of these zillions of Unreal/UT multiplayer maps then go Undying single-player! It's worth a try. And best of all: you don't need to learn the editor, because it's basicly UnrealEd. images/icons/smile.gif

[Edit]
Ofcourse I forgot to mention that you could do single-player maps for Deus Ex, too. The DX mapping community lacks a lot fo good mappers. And there is like only 3-5 single-player usermaps for Deus Ex in the whole world, so it definately needs more...

I guess I forgot to mention that I want a map that will be noticed by the mainstream audience. Undying doesn't appear to have a broad fan-base at the moment.

However, a single-player game is a single-player game. Thanks for the heads-up about it and the level editor. I may give it a shot.

Just imagine that every gamer would think like you, then there'll be no Undying community at all. And that would be very very sad.

At least let us be happy that there is a small group of Undying mappers and let us contribute to make the "scene" grow...

Undying, Deus Ex and DNF are the only Unreal-based games worth mapping for, maybe American Army, too. But we don't need another of these zillions of Unreal and UT maps. And like you know, Unreal and UT have quite boring single-player. I played some single-player usermaps and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

In moments like that I can understand people like Drazula saying that Unreal is boring. Undying has a very thrilling single-player at least. I actually wonder why there are more Unreal/UT single-player maps than Undying maps. That makes no sense. (?)

However, a single-player game is a single-player game. Thanks for the heads-up about it and the level editor. I may give it a shot.<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Personally I'd really love to see more cool single-player maps for Deus Ex with all the neat stuff like bank terminals, computers (including e-mails and messages), etc. More Undyinfg maps, too ofcourse.

If you create a Deus Ex map then submit it on this site:

http://www.planetdeusex.com/deusxed/

If you have a scary Undying map then go submit it on that site (don't bother about that contest, you can still submit maps):

http://www.3dactionplanet.com/undying/features/mappingcontest/

I say it again: YOU make the fan-base! images/icons/smile.gif

Postal 2 WILL get mainstream exposure(maybe not all positive, but still). You, Bean, Widowmaker, and a few others here are fortunate to have been making maps for UT for a long time. You guys understand the tech, and noobies like me have to learn everything from scratch. I'm gonna try my hand at a Postal 2 mod called "Flame Wars"...here's hoping I can do it!

Don't take it out of context. Postal 2 will DEFINETLY be on my "creating things for" list. It's just that Deus Ex and Undying seem to be dying off, and I don't have much motivation yet for making something that few, if any, will even download, much less apprecitate.

Yeah, I must be the only Deus Ex/Undying fan on earth. The Last Ninja I am! images/icons/wink.gif
