Check this out. I've known that Youtube has been encoding uploads in higher res than they've been showing for awhile, but I haven't seen anything on how to access them until now. Read this:
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/03/youtube-tests-higher-resolution-videos.html
Here's a couple of links. Here's my original upload of the recent DNF teaser:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWuteFLUPSY
And here it is in their highest rez available.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWuteFLUPSY&fmt=18
When we uploaded the video to Youtube, we uploaded a version specifically generated for them, so their usual process of flv'ing a video wouldn't corrupt it too much. You should notice the difference pretty well.

That's quite a difference, and a cool one at that...
Thanks for telling, i didn't know they had this up yet, i only heard they were gonna do high res/quality videos on thier website sometime in the future...

I am not sure if this will catch on unless the loading speed picks up.
I am still waiting for the high res video to load. . .
At the time of the release (of the teaser), it may have been easier to wait for YouTube to load than to wait in line to download it, but now, I can probably get the video a lot faster at the full resolution easier than waiting for this to load.
Either way, this is interesting. But, like I said, if it was faster, it would be better now.

That's kinda like when you download an avi file from google video, which is the high res version of the flv google video plays.

Well, it's not like it's going to be a 180Mb HD video. Yeesh.
They can only provide what was provided to them at source. You can't make an HD video out of a video that's not that high quality in the first place.

Hey, this is pretty cool. I'm loving the higher audio bitrate, though it is a pity stereo sound isn't implemented too.
Still, it's great to have some higher quality videos. The difference is really noticeable.

cautiously awaiting for more media but damnit i want to play DNF!:)
The video is better and I bookmarked it.
Definitely an improvement and at least a small step before they implement HD videos (which I hope they do).

Those videos actually load faster for me than Youtube videos. Awesome.
That's all nice but not that interesting for people like myself with monthly bandwiths - I think that for large HD videos it should ask for confirmation before starting to download it (if it wouldn't I'd be on a 56k speed again in no time!)

Yeah, I'll be moving to London eventually and I would really rather not have a plan like that but I don't know if I'll be able to afford anything else. :(

If you guys don't want the High resolution version just take out the &fmt=18 from the video address and it will display the normal low quality version again. ;)
I'm now using this string in all the youtube videos that i see, some have a noticeable improvement others just look a tad better because the source video was already badly encoded.

There is a bit of a difference. Pretty neat. Thanks!

Nope. Still works fine.
Hmm, tried a view a vid of 9-something minutes but it just STOPPED playing at 6:10.. I mean the red bar was full and everything but it just stopped somewhere over the middle, couldn't drag it past that point either. Weird.

I get that with a lot of youtube vids. Are you running Firefox? Anyway, there's a heck of a difference between those two videos.

I wish they would support other aspect ratios. 4:3 is so last millenium.....
YouTube is now adding links to certain videos with this option, the DNF teaser in Joes first post has an example:

We currently have over 7 billion users who have uploaded over 950 trillion videos.
What? What?
They have a strange humor.

What I like even more about this site than the fact that it's HD is that it actually seems like a good place to find actual artistic talent putting their skills forth in video production, unlike the random blog journal-whore crap that is 99% of youtube.

Yeah I always figured some kind of YouTube replacement would happen when I saw that all YouTube was becoming was faggy video versions of that Live Journal site so many people I knew used to have, as well as clips of TV shows.
So video sites based on things that are actually interesting, with some kind of class would be most welcome.
Well you can argue that YouTube still does have useful things but majority are vlogs. I don't really see any problem in that personally. While I don't like viewing vlogs I don't have to, plus YouTube has fairly good search to find what I'm specifically looking for.

One thing I noticed is if I used the YouTube link for the higher quality video, I get a bug where if I click in the seek bar to skip ahead in the movie, it puts the marker at that point but the movie itself starts over from the beginning.
But if I use the URL addition it works fine.

One of Youtube's featured videos today is "a Bunny Eating a Banana."
To say nothing about stuff like giving that irate Britney Spears guy a shot at his own frigging reality show. :mryuck:
I've posted a number of videos of my own on Youtube, some projects I really put a lot of effort into, with very limited results, and then got a strange inkling about what Youtube is really like. So the next project I made took only a couple hours to make, was intentionally lame, stupid, cheapassed, and completely meaningless. Not much to my surprise, it became my most popular video and is still getting daily comments over a year after I first posted it. That brought an end to my faith in Youtube. And I'll stop there about this, because I don't want to completely derail the thread.

Helpfull Tip:Copy the html embed text from video. Create an html page with something like Front Page. Select html view and paste that embed text between the body tags. Give your new page a name and save it anywhere on your computer. Just dbl click the htm file to watch the video without having to go to youtube. It will play right in your brouser at any resolution. It works great and loads fast. Hope it helps you.
