View Full Version : Why is DmDeck16 so popular?

I noticed that there are lots of Unreal 1 multiplayer servers using this map over and over again. There are even servers which have no maps in rotation except DmDeck16 only!
Personally I like this map, too. But I think that there are other Unreal multiplayer maps which are also great, even better.
So I'd like to know what you think makes this multiplayer map so popular to the gamers that they use it on nearly every U1 server. Is it the level design, the textures, the style/structure of the map, the placement of the weapons or just the fun of the map???
p.s. it's sunday and today I'm going to play some rounds of DmDeck16. Yes, this map (which ships with the original Unreal) seems to be currently THE place to frag on. So fire up a session fo your Unreal (v225f or v226) and join the fragfest.......CU... images/icons/grin.gif

Has good Z-axis and good flow, what else does a map need?

In my opinion, good "flow" means that the player can get a feel for the layout of the map in about 30 seconds or so. Many deathmatch maps are circular in design or built around a central core. Some maps take the player on a figure-8 course. But the general idea is that the player shouldn't get lost easily and should have a quick and easy way to get from any one part of the map to another.

flow means that you can get from one end of a map to another without stopping, or it runs fluidly..
like if I made a maze, with small corridors then the flow would suck.. however, if I widen the corridors and make the maze look like a real world item *like a maze of cubicles* and make the maze itself very easy to get through.. then you have good flow...
personally, I hate the deck level .. someone is always at the sniper vantage point.. very hard to kill them then..

"Flow" is usually defined by being able to take a route through the level with having to turn right around, or reach a dead end, and also providing route options.

That would be connectivity. Flow is more.

Obviously that route includes picking up items and so forth - connectivity is simply fixing parts of the level together. Which anyone can do, really.
Flow is trickier to balance.

Why is DmDeck16 so popular?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">If this is the level I think it is, it' flows very nicely back into itself. Has a great progression and has several different areas in a relatively small space.

Apart from Mobias this is UnrealI's only good DM map. Mobias, of course, is really a 1on1 map.

I wonder why Curse got itself into UT and not Ariza, which is a much funnier map.
the main reason i always played dmdeck16 because at the time......i only had a pentium 200 with mmx and that was the only map i was able to play with full detail at a decent frame rate images/icons/tongue.gif
What can I say. The level is a classic.
'nough said.

Itīs the map that I play most MP in UT even (DmDeck16][ if I remember the name right now images/icons/wink.gif )
Is is the level design, the style/structure of the map, the placement of the weapons and it is because of the fun of the map!!!
Aaarrrr, need to install UT again and play it images/icons/grin.gif graemlins/hhg.gif
