So right now i'm sitting on Facebook browsing the website for random groups friend and other stuff.
While i was doing it i was wondering if you have an Facebook account and what do you think of it in overall.

Also does 3drealms have any group there if so i'd really like to join it :).
Just search this name and give me a friend request.

There is a Duke Nukem Group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2207742926)
I do not know of any "official" 3DR BB group, though I would not mind joining one.

Yeah, I have one. What do I think of it?

I'm ******* jealous of Mark Zuckerberg. 23 years old, worth 1.5 billion dollars at the least, and when Microsoft payed some 250 mil for 1.6% of its shares, it means they're assuming he's actually worth 15 billion.

Not that having more than 20 million dollars matters when it comes to a luxurious life, but the guy has 400 people working for him, at HIS company. Luckiest kid in the world? You decide.

I didn't mention my opinion of Facebook:
I had been using MySpace for some time and then I was coerced into getting on Facebook. My biggest qualm with it is that there is way too much information available to way too many people. I may be 20 and a legal adult, but I don't like the idea of telling everyone I have ever met my phone number and address. Maybe it is just me, but that doesn't sound like a good practice.
Another thing I am uncomfortable with is the fact that it is too easy to find myself stalking someone on Facebook. This wouldn't be as big of an issue if I didn't know a lot of young women who are, for the lack of a better expression, not legal. I have a lot of friends who are in high school still and some as young as 14 (for various reasons, including my activities in youth ministry). I have found myself being incredibly careful/scared about being stalkerish and getting myself arrested.
I think Facebook tries too hard to be "cool" and has way too many applications and too much advertising on it. MySpace was at least honest about advertising, but Facebook tries to act like it isn't there.
For now, Facebook has less "spam" as it were but it is getting less clean and secure as the days go by. Recently I received a wall post that was spam from a friend who was phished. They offered me some free ring tones, but no one (or at least most no one) refers to me by my full name which is what I use for Facebook. I dropped MySpace because I got tired of getting friend request from beautiful young women from California who had pictures and videos they couldn't post on MySpace; at first it was mildly entertaining, but then it just got annoying. I imagine that in time things like that will enter the realm of Facebook. It really is only a matter of time.

The thing that reallybugs me though is all the chainmail-crap. Applications and quizes that forces you to pass it on to 20 friends before you can even see your own result, build your damn snowman or whatever the case may be.

I therefore highly resommend the following two groups:

I did a search for Duke Nukem. . . There are some people who seem to think they are Duke Nukem and even posted an old picture of him from some cover art or something. Sad thing.

The main reason why I joined Facebook was to keep in contact with some old friends as I move farther and farther from home.
I have since found myself talking to people on it all the time. Still to stalkerish for me though. . .

I have one, but I really only check it when I get a message or alert from someone. It's nice for selling some school-specific textbooks (like a math book edited just for SIU-C) and for keeping in touch with people from my old university. Same with MySpace. They're fun sites, but not my time-wasters.

I don't really understand all the social-networking hatred, though. It's just a website. It's not like they came to your house and kicked your puppy or porked your mom. :p

I think people just like to hate on trends, regardless of what they may be. Facebook has it's uses, but it really rubs some folks the wrong way. Usually internet nerds, because most people I meet say nothing but good things.

The Baskinator

Oh don't get me wrong that wasn't a bash against internet nerds (just who do you think you are talking to? :) ) but more a bash against those doing the bashing. What was I talking about again?

Anyway facebook is very useful for keeping track of folks you don't see all the time or that you've long since lost contact with. I found old gradeschool friends that I haven't spoken to in so very long. Leads to some awesome "Holy shit you've changed!" conversations!

That seems really redundant. The 3DR forums are what they are, but don't you want a little bit of separation now and then?

"Officers?" On a website? Sounds kind of desperate for power and meaning in a person's life.

Well I didn't make up the term 'Officers', it's what Facebook calls them. Also yeah it does seem redundant but then you could think of the 3DR group on Steam as redundant or a lot of other things.

For me it just adds a little bit more to Facebook anyway, either way it's not that big of a deal with me, it was my original goal but like I said I know not many people use Facebook enough to warrant it.

I use facebook very differently to a normal chat or forum. I generally only speak to and send stuff to people that I know in real life there. I see the profile as a private area use it only for my RL friends, especially since I live in a different country from most of my best friends.

(I mean in the profiles - in groups or stuff like that I of course chatter away with anyone like on any other forum/chat but I use the word "friend" in there for people that I consider real friends.)

Tell me you don't require people to invite 500,000 friends before they can see their results.

I'd sooner cut of my own testicles than force that onto more users.

I'm developing three apps (all "on hold" whilst I sort some nasty issues my host created without telling me): a program which simply puts a random image from my photography collection in a profile box, calendar software designed for peeps at my university to share and compare timetables, and an application which loads friend-data and shows statistics on your friends.

I must say though, I really don't like Facebook's API. The PHP version is insanely slow and buggy.

Or.

Or.

That bugged me as well, I had a psycho chick on my friends list who'd invite me to every application should could think off. So I removed her.

ou can turn off so notifications quite easily from what I recall (I know I don't get anything much). Theyu have pretty decent application and privacy control now and it's only getting better. I organise several social groups and such through facebook. It works well.

I've also found as a social tool it's jsut really interesting too. For example I flew down to sydney last weekend for a wedding. On return basically everyone logged into facebook and uploaded the pictures they took and tagged everyone. So now there's a huge web of photos most of use would never have got to see combined with the ability to get the contact of anyone from the event. It's very efficient :P

See that's why most of the complaints people have with Facebook (and MySpace I guess) are because people are too lazy to go into their settings and set it up like they want.

I only receive emails for new friends requests and when people post a message or send me a private message. I don't get any application emails and I simply block any application that sends me a notification (through facebook not email).

As it is I don't get bothered by the "crap" that Facebook has and can use it as a social networking site like I want.

I don't know what 'a facebook' is to be honest, but I'm generally not interested in online social networks, so I'm not interested in finding it out either. But apparantly these social networking sites become an ever more important aspect for the youth to construct their identities, the main problem is that most people don't recognize the risk in giving away sensitive personal information on the internet.
