The Cyberathlete Professional League has become the latest pro-gaming operation to close its doors. The organization announced that it had ceased operations on March 13, canceling all currently schedule events. The official statement cites "the current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate" as responsible for the CPL suspending operations. General ennui was not mentioned as a factor.

That sucks. :( Probably means less opportunities for professional gamers, and the CPL had some high-profile prizes.
Angel Muņoz is actually a cool guy in real life, too.

RIP CPL? More like "good riddance CPL".
Why is that? They were one of the few leagues left that gave two shits about keeping games that took the most skill instead of simply catering to the gpu-vendor/sponsor's "needs" (Switched back to Quake 3 from Quake 4, kept CS 1.6, etc.). I have quite a few memorable match demos from CPL, spanning across several games.
They had been going at it for 11 years too. I will miss them. :(

If there was something you could change about the CPL, what would it be?
Nothing. The CPL is a perfect vehicle to achieve the goals that are important to the organizers and its sponsors. Others will come and others will go, but the CPL will always be here.

The same guy that predicted e-sport was destined to rival traditional sports:
This is a new sport for an entirely new demographic. In the USA alone the younger generation born between 1982 and 1995 make up nearly one-third of the U.S. population, and already spend $170 billion a year of their own and their parents' money. They are the first to grow up with computers at home, cellphones, music downloads, and instant messaging. They are totally wired and CPL is betting that Internet streaming coverage of our events to the entire world (instead of segmented markets) will be what will drive this sport to rival any other traditional sport. This is not to say that we are not interested in television coverage and in fact we have several partners on that front, but television is dinosaur technology compared to wireless streaming, for example.

Was he serious about this back in the day or was it just a sales pitch?
