View Full Version : How did you think Max Payne would be like before you played it?

What did you ^^^ think it was going to play like?

I, for one, thought that Bullet-Time was just going to be a nice 'gimmick' that would get very old very quickly.

As it turns out, it actually adds a lot to the game. Sure, it's lots of fun - but it is useful too at many, many moments.

Other than that I had no other real shocks as I'd read enough about it to know what kind of game it was. Still, graphics were considerably better than I was expecting, and the story and theme far more dark and gritty.

Good stuff! images/icons/smile.gif

I thought Max is a secret agent.

I was expecting it be terribly gritty and darkly beautiful, and I wasn't disappointed at all. But the first thing that floored me wasn't so much the graphics, but the first scene where Max's family was murdered, that I had to actually play through it! That in itself truly established it for me as a real mature game, for grownups, not pubescent teenage shut-ins with gunrunning fantasies. After that sequence I was literally speechless.

It was only when the next level, the subways scenes, began that I realized how beautiful this game looked and played, and how well the gameplay and storyline mingled.

One fateful day in July of 2001, I walked into CompUSA with a big wad of cash, $50 to be exact. I saw a game I'd never heard of before, but it had a really cool looking box. I decided to buy it. And that game was... MAX PAYNE!!!

Seriously, I knew nothing of this game when I bought it. Since I never followed the game through its development I was really surprised. images/icons/smile.gif

I was expecting the guns to not be piss-ant pieces of shit. And I thought Max would spend the whole game in subways and ghettos, fighting nothing but street punks.

I for one didn't think it would play like it did. Nor did I think it would start how it did. But what were you expecting? Another Die Hard game with slow-mo? Hitman with bullet-dodging?

It was kinda like I expected it to be. It was awesome fun, and the bullet-time never got old. I thought he would be able to dive a little farther, but oh well. I also didnt think he was going to be able to jump lol I dont know why though.

I was right in all my assumptions about Max, so I wasn't disappointed, only surprised... I figured out how most of the game went already though, which is kind of irritating, the total surprise can be a lot cooler... that's what you get for waiting for 4 years digging up all stuff you can find images/icons/smile.gif

FMJ is the forum gun-nut-expert-person. I have a feeling tht he was saying they were either weak or not realistic enough for his tastes.

to be honest i had no idea what it was going to be like images/icons/tongue.gif
i knew i wanted the game for a very long time because 3drealms were producing it images/icons/grin.gif
and just so i didn't ruin it for myself, i didn't read any of the preveiws or reviews, i just got the game once it was out, and loved it images/icons/smile.gif

i thought max payne was an under cover cop whos cover got blown and then he was being hunted by the gangs and also the police because they didnt know he was under cover. i read the inside of the box...obviously not very clearly, proly just skimmed over it.

I thought (for some odd reason) that it be a little more thrashy, with a bunch of sexual preferences, and that's why I avoided it for awhile, but the only thing bad was the whole Candy Dawn scene. That skank. Hmph. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

It turns out that Max wasn't a player too. That would have made this game hella funny. images/icons/tongue.gif

Homoludens, I hope you enjoyed the resulting voice performance I worked hard on. images/icons/smile.gif

I think I should actually reply this thread. You see, the game turned out quite different from what we originally planned. I wonder if this applies to every game project out there?

Whoah, that is singularly impressive. Your vocal range is extraordinary. Even my niece can't scream that beautifully.

Nah, I've been around all this time (surely you've seen me among the recent visitors list), I just haven't had anything remarkable to say.

I had to use a pitch-shifter to pitch it downwards a little to make it sound right. Seriously, there's nothing you can't find in a good collection of sound FX libraries. Except for a decent set of sounds of weapons dropping on the ground.

At first I wasnt that interested by the demo really... I dunno why exactly, but then I a buddy let me borrow his game cd and I installed, needless tosay, IT IS A GOD DAMN FANTASTIC TITLE ENRICHED WITH A GREAT PLOT AND GRAPHICS...

holy moly.. the scope of it all was so cool.. you start out in some ghetto subway, and end up a million feet above the air images/icons/wink.gif

lots of AWESOME story twists...

honestly, its the best game Ive played since Half Life.. and Ive played a bunch of games since then!!..

even without multi.. im tempted to play thru the newly activated newyork minute and hard boiled cop modes graemlins/hhg.gif

At first I didnt care about the BT feature but after a few encounters I noticed I was actively following the bullet tracers images/icons/smile.gif ...

such a satisfying game images/icons/smile.gif

shame I didnt pre order it.. when they had the pre order promotion.. I remember I had my credit info all filled out but squabbled out before pressing the submit button images/icons/frown.gif

Ah well.

100% satisfaction when I went thru it images/icons/smile.gif

The thing that SURPRISED ME the most was that before playing the game, I thought itd be a quick little obscure shooting fest.....

I was proven WRRRRRRONG.. it took me about 2 weeks to wrap up max payne.. Id play for a few hours each day.. some review sites really twisted the length negatively images/icons/tongue.gif

I went back to my extremely old gaming fan page, and I browsed my links page...

I had totally forgotten that my first link was for Max Payne. The description of the link said "I cannot wait to play this game. With a lead character that good lookin' , how can you go wrong?"

So, my opinion of Max Payne before I played it is exactly the same. images/icons/grin.gif

I was expecting Max Payne to be almost epic in length - but I bought it on a Saturday afternoon, and had finished it by Sunday evening. And no, I wasn't continously playing it images/icons/tongue.gif

So, the length of the game did bug me a bit - and thus I hope that MP2 is going to be significantly longer.

I plan to get into all the Max-FX editing tools though, so that makes up for it I guess - but only just.

Hopefully that doesn't sound too negative... because the fact is, I really really enjoyed the game and I think the Remedy guys did a good job.

But how about a bit more length to the next one? images/icons/grin.gif

But the music rocks...<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I'm sure it's making fun of an episode of pokemon that caused seizures because of flashing lights in japan back in 1997. It's not as bad as was reported, so snopes says it's false. But many children did epileptic fits because of it.

http://www.snopes2.com/radiotv/tv/seizure.htm

There was also a really funny imitation of it on the simpsons:

I hadnt watching the developing of MP. So I was sure that Max would be a trigger-happy loose cannon, whose passion and and aim was killing people. But my opinion changed after watching pre-game intro.I had completed it twice and I'm playing it now (isnt it a dream of every developer, is it?). And music is really outstanding images/icons/smile.gif

The Seizure Bots site is based off the Pokemon incident and the Simpsons episode. images/icons/grin.gif I wish I knew the person who made it, as I'm sure they're a barrel of fun.

Greatest. Website. Ever. In fact, I think I'll put the link back in my sig.

*snicker* Hope you enjoyed it. images/icons/wink.gif Just don't *twitch* stare *twitch* too long.

Heh, I havn't actually GOT the game yet, I'm getting it on Tuesday, but I've pieced together info and downloaded a couple of gameplay movies, so I've got a rough understanding how it plays..

I actually thought Max Payne would be a lot like Duke Nukem, when I hadn't read any reviews for it..I thought it wouldn't have much of a storyline either. I thought he would be a wannabe comic book hero images/icons/smile.gif

I can't wait to get it..2 more days!

sawn_off
05-13-2002, 03:39 AM
I'm saying "9 more days to GTA3 PC!". And Max kinda DOES play like Duke.

Kedath
05-13-2002, 05:12 AM
Got me wrong here, I meant it would be like Duke as just a shoot em up game..I'm not saying Duke is a bad game, it rules, but I like other elements in my games, like Max Payne for one. The in depth storyline gives feeling towards the character..anyways, I didn't mean it played like Duke images/icons/smile.gif
