So, at one time I did web design with a company called Worldwide Xceed Group, Inc. which was responsible for designing sites like Pampers.com, HiltonHonors.com, HermanMillerRed.com, and the Survivor tv series web sites. I also worked for Chaos! Comics and Todd McFarlane Productions and while there oversaw development of their web sites as well as designing some of them.

So, when I moved to Greenville, TX I went and looked up the local movie theater's web site. For reference it is at http://geusnet.com/~majestictheatre/

The site HURTS MY EYES! It's so plain and the color is just out there. So, I contacted the theater webmaster and said, "hey, i used to work in web design, and while your site gives me the information I need I would love to donate my time free of charge to help you design something a little more eye friendly." Not actualy a quote but that was the gist of it. I was actualy very respectful and did not specificaly put down the site. Just thought they might like the help.

I got the most scathing rude, profanity laced email back. Talking about how if I didnt like the site I could go "F" myself.

Now please, what would possess someone to go on the offensive that way. Greenville is growing and eventualy a bigger chain may move in, and I would think a company who does have a web presence would want to convey a little more professional appearance. Am I wrong here?

I deleted it alas this was several weeks ago but I have never posted anything untrue here. Just take my word for it. The theater webmaster was a douche.

If you have Gmail you can always resurrect it! It sounds hilarious.

The site looks as I had done it.
But I wouldn't hire myself to do a website for anything either.
God, how awful.

Of course he was a douche. You were trying to horn in on his territory. I'm not saying that his profanity laden tirade is excusable, but in a way it is understandable. If you were to come in and totally blow away his work (which, given your resumé, is probable), even if that work were performed gratis, he could suddenly find his job security in jeopardy as there is a very real possibility that the theater owner could fire him and offer you the job of webmaster. And if the guy is already insecure about his abilities, well, an offer like yours would be more than enough to set him off, I think.

More simply, think about it from his perspective.

Now if you're looking for work then I would suggest going to the theater owner directly, but otherwise, I say leave it alone.

The theater webmaster is probably the theater owner's otherwise unemployed pothead nephew. I mean, who would PAY for that website?

That is pretty amateur.

As for his response, I've worked in customer service of one kind or another for my entire career, and I can't imagine ever telling a customer that I didn't want his business. Money = good, right? I would phone or visit that theatre and ask to talk to the owner/manager. He needs to know if one of his employees is costing him business.

I found out who the webmaster is. Rumor has it from a very reputable source the webmaster is the owner's son, who is in his 30's and also manages the theater for his parents. Truth? I don't know, but it sure sounds plausable.

In that case, I wouldn't bother anymore as it is probably pointless. Instead, I would point my finger at the son and laugh whenever I see him.

Well, it would explain why he was such a jerk to you. Since he manages the theater, who are you going to complain to?

Pity you didn't keep the email since I'm sure his parents would have found it interesting.

That website looks like something I would have made when I was 11 or 12 years old. Holy shit. Did he use a super awesome do-it-yourself retarded website template?

You emailed someone, telling him his work sucks and that you'd be better at it. What were you expecting?

I think if your work sucks you should be man enough to know it and not need someone to point it out. I mean that work SUCKS.
