As we know, 3DRealms are mainly focusing on DNF's singleplayer mode...
And since it would be a shame only to have a great singleplayer experience, with a medicore multiplayer...
I thought that if there should be ANYTHING different from DNF's multiplayer compared to other games, 3DR should add at least this thing in DNF's mutliplayer mode: Humor and interactivity (sorry if you already have this in DNF... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif)

As for humor i have this to add:

- I want Duke quotes to be an option... Either Auto, Off or Manual (manual could be key assigned, like taunts... And Auto could also add a oneliner for each MP start... Although, it should be optional too)

Please concider this idea 3DR... Most people would surely like it...
As for interactivity, it's self-explaining... This could include anytihing from Traps, to flushing toilets... the rest could be some stuff from the 'interactivity' thread...

in multiplayer they could do a abusive use of the shrinking feature.. a mode where a giant duke as to crush small opponnents which are trying to set giant trap for the duke or something.. or just survival..
a coop survival mode could be nice too.. it wouldn't be like "real coop" mode.. but only a mode where you fight hordes of ennemies(bots and/or other players playing roles of badass of their choice)
actually the possibility to choose between a good range of creatures..if not everyone, would be great..there could be good balancing to be done though.. maybe on the form of respawn-time.. if you want to be a battlelord, your respawn time would be of like 4 minutes.. respawn time for regular duke would be of 30 secondes.. respawn time of regular liz trooper , would be 20 seconds.. and protozoid slimer..like 1 seconds http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
..and actually unrelated, a mode(or simply an option) where there is no possibility of respawn is important to me..it always makes "life" more important..so it's more intense gameplay.. in vietcong i really liked multiplayer for the great number of no-respawn gameplay match..
else than that.. something like GTA-duke :multiplayer, would be great.. but i guess that won,t happen in that game..
but a level where we can ride free in a kind of big city, with at least respawning(if not, bought http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) vehicules, and maybe some pedestrian, respawning or not..that would be nice.. but..man.. no geo-mod is in the game http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif..!!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif
also a scoreboard would be a nice thing to look at from time to time..with more detailed info..like number of killed pedestrian if any.. number of head shots.. groin shots..vehicules destroyed.. number of drank cola.. and all with titles associated..
and as in Kingpin(maybe other games did that ..don't know) when new skins and new maps were detected , it downloaded them automatically if the player allowed that feature.. I think it is great.. so everyone can access easily your stuff, view your personnalised character(mostly if we aren't forced to take duke in multiplayer), and play in your own map, so it is more player-friendly.. every multiplayerr games should have that..
i think that's about it for now..

Well the spider bots from UT2K4 is a good idea. Since it will "definatly" be made from that engine I suppose that means less work.

In the 2k1 video we saw Duke operating a crane,IF that is still in I would like to be able to have a crane bombing match:
-pick up an explosive barrel (or something) with the crane
-swing the crane around and release the barrel on the right time to hit another crane with the barrel.

One thing I surely hope will be in MP is a bot match possibility. I like to train on bots and get to know the map before playing on LAN.

They have said in the past that they said up death matches between bots to test the AI, don't know if that's still in though.

Frankly I hate it when people creat games with bots online only. It is so ***** annoying. They just leave the game but it's still running with those annoying ***** bots. Singleplayer and Multiplayer are the same!! UGH it ***** frustraits me. If they were going to have bots then why not just put a "Bot match" thing in the main menu or a "Practice" in the main menu instead of getting the main server flooded with all these ***** annoying bot games!

i wonder how the MP levels are in DNF..
Will they be UT like..?! Or maybe more freedom... I hope there are buildings which can be entered, and a logical 'limit' for the level... (Not some invisible wall in the middle of the desert...)

This stuff with the vehicles is a problem imo, they said they donīt have so much time, so I donīt think they will build something like onslaught!
I hope they will build in ctf, dm, tdm... the normal stuff, but at least one "advanced" thing should be in, something like assault or an objective based mode http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
They could use the vehicles there!

I think taunts like in Duke3D multiplayer should be in DNF but:
if anyone is allowed to taunt as much as he likes ... we'll all go mad hearing the 14-year olds taunting like raving lunies ... so basicly Duke should only be able to taunt whenever he has reached enough"charisma-points" or something like that ... so after a good killing-streak when your charisma reaches 100% you can then Taunt the other players on the server and say something like "I'm all outa gum!"

As for vehicles in MP? I think that would ruin the fun that is what made Duke 3D's multi such a blast. Jetpack is the only vehicle I want.

The hell will multiplay. These days you either make a multiplayer game or a singleplayer game. And only few games can pull of COOP, such as the Novalogic games.
Deathmatch is obsolete and that's Duke's multiplay could offer.

Yeah I've played some online BF, which still sort of feels like DM on large scale, even though its supposed to be sort of tactical. But it was still a shitload of fun.

Those amongst us that actually played Duke 3D, both single player, and multiplayer, will remember the things that brought us to love that game, and which made it stand out above the competition.

CTF...Assault...Co-op... To me, they are all overdone, not to mention incredibly redundant. Duke doesn't chase flags and he's not a team player. DNF doesn't need any of those play mode to be good.

Co-op redundant? It is the most rare of the best gameplay modes ever, today.
There's something to be said for having to go back to eight year old games for good co-op (spare Serious Sam and a few more).

i just have to say that i think to this day that dukematch was and still is the finest deathmatch i've ever played
I hope they have multiplayer for DNF. Duke Nukem3d's muliplayer was so kick ass. I loved the shrink ray and being able to mine teleporters and never have the mines wear out was so cool.

Im not interested in Co-op at all. It might have been neat, but not worth all the extra work and time needed to do it correctly. Id rather they just spend that much more time and effort making the Dukematch cooler.
One thing I really like in games is when there are significant differences in gameplay between single player and multiplayer. For example the weapons do different things, and have different damage ratings than in single player. I also like when there are separate levels just for multiplayer that you wont find in single player. Sure, if you spend 6 months putting awesome design and detail and thought into a wicked single player map, then yea it would be a waste not to re-use it in multiplayer, but also I like when there are specific deathmatch only type maps.
Also I hope there is a good rating/ranking system for online play, that keeps track of TONS of details, not just the amount of kills/deaths, but also stuff like headshots, body shots, 'bootings', kills by explosion, favorite weapon, and more!
And most importantly, I hope you guys find a way to make cheating impossible, or at least really hard. Maaaan I hate cheaters.

Since everyone is talking about co-op, I thought I would just throw this in.
I know they will not be putting in a co-op mode but I REALLY do hope that they at least ship with the ability for mod/map makers to put co-op functionality in their work.
I know that a mod maker can just put in the functionality in by himself, but having it in already would save a lot of effort that could be put into just making the maps better.

I believe the have said they didn't do that, they want to focus on things that they know work. co-op will take up valuable time, even if it's not supposed to be official and they rather spend that time on something usefull. I thought about DNF having a special 'points' system MP-mode, where you win by getting the highest score in 'special kills points' instead of frags..! For instance, you kill someone with a RPG which gives you a special bonus, because it's... well... more exagerated than regular gun-kills, because the player gets blown into pieces rather than falling lifeless to the ground... The same goes of course, for the Shrinker, Freeze-ray, or any locational damage, like blowing the head off a player with a single shotgun blast..! This game mode would also be a pretty cool addition with vehicles in MP..! (but i doubt there's any vehicles in DNF's MP though..!)

It's stupid that people review games by content...
In reality, it's all about the game being funny/interresting/feels good...
And multiplayer..! If some game gets 9/10 because the singleplayer rocked, but the Multiplayer sucked, would it then mean that the game would have gotten 10/10 because ONLY the singleplayer was there with no MP, since it doesn't contain any bad stuff..?! (MP that is)...
It bothers me, because some reviewers actually rate games that way...
A good Example is the Battlefield Games... The 'singleplayer' is actually nothing special... It's more like a 'training ground'... I hope they do the multiplayer part of DNF great. I have played to many with mediocre multiplayer game (Doom 3, Unreal Tourment, CoD, even BF2 after a few days, etc...). The best ones I have played are...
1-2) Counterstrike (yeah, I know, I put it up 2 times)
3) MoHAA
4-99) None!
However I havn't played any DN multiplayer game.
Why are CS so great? It's because it has interresting challanging objectives, in a good natural way.
1) There are more than one way to win the map (2 places to plant a bomb for example) which naturally spread out players around the map. This is very well done in many CS and in some MoHAA maps. Let us be able to solve objectives in 2 or max 3 ways.
2) The objectives feel real in CS and MoHAA, and aren't patetic capture the boring unatural flag or holding the base for 30s to capture it (like in BF2) while the opposite team capture another base of yours, so it becomes a running around in circle syndrome (as in UT and BF2).
3) Tactical combat... You don't feel it's a rush toward your goal all the time so it in the end feels very repetive. You need to feel that you can calm down a little too. You feel that in CS because valve lets you have an advantage while moving slowly.
4) You need in a natural way take a break so you can chat a little, like in CS or MoHAA objectives. If you die you need to wait until the map is finished.
5) Smaller interresting maps countra large one where you need to run alot or even use vehicles. Large maps becomes more than often overwhelming. I hope 3Drealms stay with smaller maps.
Suggestions on objectives, just to give you some ideas...
=======================================
* Open a locked door (if you have the key) so you can destroy the science lab or factory. A random player of opposite team has the key which you can pick up if you kill him, but you must do it before any other enemy pick it up of course. You can also open it by planting a bomb there. An ammo room have probably the tools you need for that. 2 NPC can also have the keys so not everyone are in the same place, so people are naturally spread out.
* Open up 1 of 2 safes and steal the document, by placing a bomb (if you fetch enough explosives from the ammo room which is probably heavily guarded) or by capture 1 of 2 NPC (located at different places) which the opposite team must guard and bring him to the safe he owns which he is forced to open for you. If any team kill him that team loose. The one who have the document must after that succeed to reach one location.
* Capture at least 1 of 2 enemy NPC scientists and bring them to 1 of 2 vehicles (scientists and vehicles are located at different places). The team who kills a scientist loose of course.
* Destroy a bridge by either planting bombs in 1 of 2 places (or by capture an adjacent smaller ship (and pull a lever to navigate the ship forward) so it crashes and destroys the bridge).
* Destroy 1 of 2 heavy weapon system, radar or whatever.
* Liberate at least 1 of 2 NPC prisoners.
Other stuffs...

"Drugs" which we can use with different effects, like you grow so you becomes really big and strong (bonus to close combat damage and armor) but easier to hit.

Hell yeah, I'm tired of developers skimping on the multiplayer. Hell, max payne didn't even HAVE multiplayer. Thats just criminal in this day.

Theres been lots of threads on multiplayer but i dont recall any of them specifically addressing cheating.
anyway what do we know so far?
- no coop
- different modes? possibley capture the babe?
- max players? 32? 64?
I assume that DNF will run quite smoothly online, since it will use netcode at least as good as Unreal's, which in my opinion is the best.
as far as cheating, will there be any steps taken to prevent it ? As far as i know, the only sure-fire way to prevent wall hacks is to perform all the visibility calculations on the server for each client, which I think would be totally impractical.
Is the only real way to prevent cheating to play with people who you know and trust not to be cheating? If thats the case, maybe we should create a DNF forumers clan now for all us hardcore folks who have been patiently wating for this game. If we wait until after the game is realeased, this forum will be full of thousands of noobs and we wont be able to distinguish who the believers are, who were here before the release.

I've been trying to think of a way to prevent cheating in one of my own games. Checksum seems to be the way to go, as well as permanently making certain variables read-only. I have a long way to go before I can prevent 1337 hax0rz from stopping my game, but 3DR probably is keeping all of this in mind and has people already working on it. I'd rather they not spill the beans on whatever anti-cheatiing mechanisms they use as well.

but for cheats like wallhacks and aimbots, i dont see how you can prevent them. They have to do with manipulating data after its already on your machine.
I have a cheat for counterstrike that you run before starting up the game, and it hooks into the directX graphics code somehow, to draw things differently (transparently for example). It doesnt change any files but rather runs in memory, so I dont know if a checksum would be effective.
The problem with cheats is that the developer doesnt just have to make the game cheatproof for the average gamer. The developer has to make it cheatproof against the smartest and best hackers in the world. Because once one person has figured out how to cheat, anyone is able to cheat.

That's easy... As you may have noticed, some members here have a similar symbol on their avatar... (some have the whole symbol AS avatar like Hell-Angel, Kristian Joensen, or Dudemiester) These people are a member of the cult...
What you have to do, is to add this symbol somewhere on your avatar (like mine is placed down in the corner)
If you want, you can modify it with different colors, or something... (or ask if someone will do it for you) The symbol has to be clear, and noticable... and you van place it anywhere you want... As long as it can be recognized as the cult symbol (text and stuff is not necessary)

Nephthys is a very neat antihack mod for Unreal 1 servers. It is able to detect and automatically block DoS and DDoS attacks!!! It also logs IP addresses and allows moderators to kick or ban players who cause problems.

These are written in Unrealscript ? If that is the case they MIGHT be portable to DNF since one of the few things DNF stil uses from the Unreal Engine IS Unrealscript.

You can't stop cheaters. Not as long as the games are built on easily modified and manipulated software. And since protocall is blind it's easy to spoof.
Punkbuster and other anti cheat programs will work to an extent, but it won't take long for someone to figure out how to overide it or blindside the protocall.
There's people out there that make money on the side by making mods and trainers to help players cheat.
The only reliabe cheat prevention is to play LAN with people you can trust. As it seems within the past few years cheating has exploded.

Well, as for aimbots - these are, technically, proxy servers (the ones I know, at least) which manipulate the data stream. If there are anti-cheat-measures which check the system for any such running processes, then a determined cheater could just use a second PC as a (real) proxy. The whole communication is then streamed over that second PC where the data manipulation takes place.
Ok, may sound a bit far-fetched (or expensive), but I'm just saying that I don't think that cheating on the client can ever really be prevented. As long as the user is in control of his system, he can manipulate everything, including the anti-cheat-software itself.

As far as I know all populary online games have a bunch of cheaters. Cheating should be possible with all games though. Altrough many new online games have special people that will check for cheaters as a job, still the most unsupported online games can easely become a cheat fest because of trainer programs. Overall it's very simple, DNF wouldn't have annoying cheaters if the game is still supported.

As for Duke3D, multiplayer was played while all players
are playing the Main character Duke Nukem but
the only diffrence between all players during a multiplayer
game was the color of the clothes he was wearing.
In DNF i expect being able to set the Character
for online playing but not only duke with
diffrent clothes colors,
it would be awsome if there will be an option
to chose to play as a Pigcop
or some other monsters,and the edf soldiers
and some other chars we dont know yet..
point is, if multiplayer game will be played only
with duke char, the game will miss something.

You could dress him as a Cowboy or a Floridan in one of those Hawain shirts, or a marine or a copper.
Even better, mix'n'match.
You could have quit a lot of fun dressing your Duke.
Best of all would be a duke costume generator like in City of Heroes.
If you included a Duchess character too, many girls would buy this game just for the multiplayer dressing up stage.

I think every NPC in the game should be available for multiplay. To me one of the great falings of every multiplayer game to date is the lack of variety in playable characters, it's damm nea impossilbe to play a game with your freinds where everyone has a character that is a representation of themselves. DNF whill likely have a huge and diverse cast of characters who could solve this problem if they were in multiplay.

Funny comic. Perhaps in the new Dukematch we'll have to earn the right to play as Duke. A big-head mutator with a character change is a nice way to avoid servers being overfilled with Duke models. I see out-of-the-box DNF multiplayer moving beyond teamplay and trying to empower the individual player again in a very "Duke" way.
