"Publisher Interplay (in the process of making a comeback, it seems) on Tuesday announced that it is underway with an official sequel in the acclaimed Earthworm Jim franchise."

It has been a long, long time without Interplay. I actually don't remember too much from them. I do remember "Redneck Rampage" though. Either way, I am pretty happy to see that they are coming back.

Hmmm...
Never played anything Earthworm Jim beyond part 2. I think the first two were brilliant although, especially part 1, sometimes rather difficult.

They made Redneck Rampage? I loved that one. Maybe they do another sequel. That would be awesome.

I lost my copy of Atomic Bomberman years ago but I do remember when I did run it on a 800mhz P3 it ran extremely fast. I guess bad programming or something? I dunno but I want one for the new generation... :(

It'll depend on the team for Earthworm Jim. Most of the team of the originals long left shiny (most of them forming Planet Moon Studios) and that's if even shiny is developing it. Wait and see I guess.

Well, they're already going in the right direction by hiring the original creator as the creative consultant. Here's hoping that this one doesn't end up like Atari's attempt to revive the series on the PSP, which happened a few years ago.

You're not really missing much, there were only two original games released after EWJ2. One was a mediocre 3D platformer that Shiny Entertainment had no involvement in, and the other was a crappy GameBoy game.

The original two Jim games were awesome though, even though I preferred the first one over the second (Earthworm Jim 2 felt a little too much like a collection of mini-games for my liking), but they were both still great.

Yes but after the abysmal MDK2 I don't trust anyone but the original team to do that one justice. When you try to make a formula out of a game that was just thrown together as they went along with any insane idea they had on the day... well you can't replicate that easily. Splitting up the game play in MDK2 just ruined it (that and the obnoxiously horrible humour).

I still love the first one to death.
Although I can't find the second one for the PC. :(

Not sure I can be happy. Interplay? So what, unless they get the teams back together. I don't have to remind you people the kinds of stupid decisions that went on business-wise. I mean this company had nearly two dozen must have franchises and they died.

Earthworm Jim won't bring them back to the top. Nor is it guarunteed to be a good game either, don't you people remember 3D? Yeah thats right :(

Yes that's true... however...

in conjunction with character creator Douglas TenNapel, who will simultaneously serve as the project's creative consultant and help launch an Earthworm Jim animated series and feature film to "expand the well-known brand."

I remember playing Earthworm Jim on the Genesis. I don't remember which one, or much about the game, but I do remember I enjoyed it.

There was a previous article and post about them regrouping a few months back.

Also, I think most people confused them as a development team, when I believe they were primarily in the publisher role.

In any case, hopefully they can turn things around and drop that idea about coming back with an mmorpg. :o

I meant Black Isle is dead, and ONLY Interplay is coming back. Interplay is a publisher for Fallout, not the developer. Therefore they'd have to hire a third party, who most likely would do the exact same job Bethesda is doing.

I'd like to see Descent 4, but who will make it?
Volition Inc. is not likely to.

Yeah, Volition has no time, they need to make a second Punisher game first.

In Fallout's case, it's both. Just saying.

Yeah, Volition has no time, they need to make a second Punisher game first.

Before they can get to that they need to finish the new Red Faction... and make it good enough to make us forget the shit that was RF2. ;)

But Interplay made so many games... it's hard to decide what ones I would love to see them continue. While I'm happy to see Earthworm Jim 4 and a new MDK on the way... I look forward to a new Descent and hope for a new Clayfighter. :p

I know I couldn't have been the only person who liked Clayfighter dammit.

Interplay + Volition should be able to make a great Freespace 3, I would buy it.

Volition is finishing up Saints Row 2, then Red Faction 2...after that they could have some time.

;) Yeah, I know. Black Isle was a division of Interplay...which was both a publisher and a developer.

Guess who made Wasteland, which is what Fallout was a spiritual successor to? :censored:

What? Interplay 2008 is just a bunch of suits trying to resurrect a long dead IP bank. I see nothing to make me think otherwise. Name the developers interplay has at their disposal right now.

I bet you a large sum of money EWJ4 is contracted out by some company and is not in house. I'd be very surprised if I was wrong. Shiny is NOT what they used to be and their leader took off. EWJ will be a shadow of his former self. That one man cannot make an entire sequel.

Heh, I know/understand that the new Interplay is just abunch of suits trying to cash in on old IPs. This entire deal is based solely on the money they made from selling the Fallout IP to Bethesda, and they were totally in the red before that so it goes to show how far ahead they think in terms of profitability and company turnaround. ;) I doubt they will stay afloat with an Earthworm Jim 4, even if it turns out to be really good.

I was just saying that, initially (and the context from which my comment was about) Black Isle Studios was a division of Interplay, created specifically to make RPGs. Interplay was a games developer aswell as a publisher for the most part, they just usually broke it up to different companies. It was Interplay who shut down Black Isle, so that's what my comment was about, more of a joke about how they come back *because* of the selling of Fallout. (Which I still think, along with Planescape, is their best game to date.)

Yeah... they can call it RF2 if they want. As far as I'm concerned, the 'real' RF2 never happened.

Interplay was behind a lot of great games. Blackthorne, Battle Chess, the Descent series, Star Trek 25th Anniversary, Star Trek Judgment Rites...

I still wish they hadn't discontinued Secret of Vulcan Fury....

Blackthrone...is that Prince of Persia with shotgun? I remember playing it on my ancient 486DX4 100MHZ. That's one game that really deserves a sequel with co-op in it.

Great to hear that, better hope that they revive the Descent franchise. A game like that would look REAL good with today's tech as opposed to what we had 10 - 15 years ago.
