The game is a real triumph in design. It's fun, it's moody, and the soundtrack is great. The voice acting isn't bad either. but me and my friends agree that Lupino's fascination w/ the viking world and all that crap, the tatoo on his face... seeing that just takes you out of the game. Up until that point there was a nice sense of realism to it. The roscoe st. station looked exactly like a new york subway looks like. the city and all it's details, the grafitti, beat up buildings, etc., all great things accurately recreated for this most amazing game in New York. and it featured the mafia, something i adore. but lupino is no mobster. he's this joker with a friggin tatoo on his face, mumblin about all these deals with the devil. my suggestion to remedy for max payne 2 (because we all know it's coming) is just watch a few scorsese movies (or sopranos, that's a better reference for modern gangsters). well, that is if the mob makes a return images/icons/smile.gif

I agree. The Lupino character was, for lack of a better word, stupid in concept. Even though I found the Fear That Gives Men Wings level beautiful and atmospheric, that one aspect jerked me out of the immersion. If anything, Lupino should have been portrayed as more threatening and dark, not corny and lame.

Jack Lupino was a psycho, he thought the world was coming to an end (the blizzard, Ragnarok, valkyr, ect).
And people DO get tatoo's on their face you know..

Jack Lupino? HAHAHA... images/icons/grin.gif
Jack Lupino can't be wicked, dangerous, ... like gungster. He's just psycho (and the main villain is Nicol). According to it, Remedy guys made everything well...

Spazer, I know all that. I just think its silly to have a mobster be that messed up. Especially when he's that important that he has guys protecting him .
As for the facial tatoo... maybe members of Hell's Angels, but not made guys in the mafia.

Still, I found Cognitti too cardboard cutout, and Lupino just simply out of context -- a crazed obsession with ruling the mafia world would have been more thematically respectful, as opposed to that corny demon worship.

I think it's not only Lupino's character that takes you out of the game. It's the overall story that has only been written to justify the action and the gimmicks. Sam Lake is no writer all right, so there can't be much to expect from him.

Wait, I'm confused. I thought Sam Lake was charactor model for Max Payne. Also, I thought that Lupino was an excellent addition to the game. It showed how messed up someone can get after using V (It also freaked me out a little bit). It was also key to the plot because the Don had to send Lupino threatening notes so Max could intercept them and lead up to going after Puchinello. Without that, Max would have just gone after Puchinello without any past history or a previous known relationship between those two (which would have been boring).
UMMM....
ok, (takes deep breath) I'm done now

It's pretty clear. Hope Basky's ok with this.
The fact that Lake used his face for Max means he was having some mid-life crisis feeling like a wimp. Or he wanted someway to look good to his wife. He's much buffer as Payne than he is in reality.
For me, the Lupino spin nicely broke up the normal pace of the game. I mean, he was'nt a gangster at all and watching Max root out all the scum from NY city was nice...Wait..Nicol Horne was'nt a gangster too images/icons/confused.gif

They just didn't want to pay for actors when they could have just done it themselves.

Yeah, the Netherlands stuff never really fit in the story. I'm surprised they didn't toss in any New Amsterdam referances to New York.

Ok, ok...so that's just my opinion.

Forget Sam. You could get a modeler to model you into Max Payne! Besides, Max has the beard, and he's got muscles, and he's actually picked up a gun in his life, and he has handcuffs images/icons/grin.gif

Ok, Sam is handsome, but Max is much buffer. images/icons/wink.gif I agree with sawn_off. They just look like two different, both nice, people and nothing more.
And I would give away everything just to touch real weapon images/icons/frown.gif

I'm a bit confused on the actor point.. so the guy who was modeled for Max Paynes face, is also the guy who plays him in the graphic novel, or is that just a drawing? Is he also posing on the menu, or is that someone else?

Hmmm... I don't think so.
They're quite different in build, I guess. The 3D model of Max has broader shoulders, is heavier, and taller.... Not that I've paid attention that closely. *sheepish grin* images/icons/grin.gif

A nice job if I may say so images/icons/smile.gif They are the same guy, yep. Only of course, it's a bit different with a 3d model with only one (actually four) images slapped onto it than a graphic novel.

something i never understood is what is max's real name? the gangsters call him max payne, which since he is undercover must have been an alias. his wife calls him max...so whats his real last name? unless he didnt have an undercover name which makes no sense what so ever, since they created a fake background for him, describing him as "a repeated felon" yadda yadda....anyone else wondering this?
and another thing.....SAM lake...MAX payne.....sam and max....is that a reference to the old mac game sam and max hit the road by lucasarts or is it just coincidence?
